New species of EeePC to cost $200, drop next year Asus has said they will be pushing their price point down in 2009, possibly to escape the overcrowded $300-$400 netbook arena and compete against the far less capable pocket PCs and smartphones that go for two Benjamins. They haven’t said much aside from that, but could it be that the changes they’re making to the Eee Box are going to spread to the EeePC? A Celeron 220 processor isn’t exactly a step up, although it might help them reduce prices. Personally, I’d like to see innovation in form factor or interface, like HP is trying come January. Damn, the...

Hands on with an Eee PC netbook — Apple doesn’t offer a netbook and—if the comments of its executives are to be believed—has no plans to do so. Peter Cohen wondered what Mac users might be missing out on, so he tested an Eee PC from Asus....

ASUS Eee PC 1002HA Pops Up on U.S. Retailer SitesJust in sync with what ASUS told us, the Eee PC 1002HA is popping up on U.S. retail sites, including ZipZoomFly.com and Buy.com for $499. The retailers sites still say you have to pre-order the 1002HA but we expect them to start shipping soon, because ASUS told us the 1002HA will begin shipping in early December and will replace the Eee PC 1000H. The Eee PC 1002HA’s design is a cross between the Eee PC S101 and the Eee PC 1000H and sports a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, and Windows XP Home. It also packs a...

A Response to TechCrunch: Netbooks May Not Be Perfect But They Are Good EnoughThe following letter is a response to TechCrunch’s post entitled “Three Reasons Why Netbooks Just Aren’t Good Enough” by Michael Arrington. Dear Mr. Arrington, I write this on a MSI Wind netbook as a longtime fan of your blogs and posts. However, your recent post on “Why Netbooks Just Aren’t Good Enough” gives me pause. Firstly, your article showed very little research on the current state of netbooks. While I do not want to dwell on your factual inaccuracies (as already outlined out by Liliputing and Boing Boing Gadgets) it is important to note that: Most netbooks today come with...

I have not been a huge fan of Netbooks, mostly due to the size of the keyboard, screen, and worried over performance. Having a chance to review the HP Mini 1000 changed that for me, though. The HP Mini 1000 is a fantastic choice for those wanting something more mobile without wanting to break the bank. I’ve been very impressed with the speed, the comfort of the keyboard, and spacious screen. Fan noise was almost non-existant. The screen is very glossy, and if glossy screens bug you, then the Mini 1000 isn’t for you. Personally, I like the vibrant colors...

Computer For a Child?jameswing writes "I am thinking of buying a UMPC, such as an Eeepc or a Wind for my son, and wanted to get input from Slashdot. He is almost 2 and really curious about our computers, and anything electronic. I want to foster this in him, without having him on my desktop or laptop. I also don't really like the idea of getting one of those cheap 'Learning Laptops' that have a tiny screen and are really limited. Does anybody have one that they use with their children? How sturdy is it? Will it stand up to a 2 year...

Eee PC with built-in EVDO?Another thing I have a vague recollection of was an announcement in August or September that Asus was going to offer an Eee PC with a built-in EVDO modem and a service plan. This started the thread about $99 netbooks. The product was supposed to ship in October but I can't find any evidence of it. Do you know what happened? Did they ship? If not, is it still planned?...

Giving a Laptop, PDA, or Smartphone As A Gift? Be Sure They Want It, FirstBetween all the Black Friday and pre-Christmas sales and discounts, you may find that buying a loved one a new computer, PDA, or smart phone is within your budgetary reach.  Before you do that, though, make sure this gift will be something the recipient wants. Electronics configurations vary a great deal — even if you know that someone on your list wants a PDA, do you know what brand or model?  If they covet an Eee PC, do they want the 4G Surf, the 901, or the 1000H? This is important not just to make the giftee happy, but to...

Acer Will Launch 10 Inch Netbook in February Acer’s netbooks are set to get bigger and cheaper in the new year, according to Acer Taiwan boss Scott Lin. The company will be launching a 10” version of its Aspire One in February or March of 2009, clearly taking aim at the sweet spot for size and portability already covered by the Eee PC, the Wind and Dell’s Minispiron. Lin also says that he expects prices to keep dropping, although netbooks won’t see the big reductions of the mid range (US$900-1200) models. It’s actually pretty hard to see where things are going in the netbok world. They obviously...

I’m not quite sure when it happened. Maybe it was when I imported a Chumby so my alarm clock became internet enabled. Maybe it was when we purchased the Macbook for my son + wife (she occasionally brings home a work Windows laptop) so we have 3 laptops in the house (the netbook EeePC is in a draw, too hard to type on, and a pain for WiFi at times) and every night at 9 or 10pm both of us are in bed online. But maybe it was when I hacked the Apple TV (again, the last time it got...

ASUS Eee PC 1002HA hands-on and video: looks a lot like the S101 The folks over at Laptop have gotten some quality face time with a pre-production model of ASUS' 10-inch Eee PC 1002 HA, and they seem to like a lot of what they're seeing. It boasts stylings reminiscent of both the Eee PC S101 (trackpad) and the 1000H (keyboard), and as such is basically a hybridized version of the two, though the test model "wouldn't power on" so we can't got much further than that. We do however, know that it'll house a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU with 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive, and that it'll...

Eee PC 901GO with faster SSD and a bigger battery surfaces in FranceFiled under: Laptops The Eee PC 901 has always been the sweet spot model in ASUS's alphabet soup of a netbook line, and the 901GO launched today in France makes it even more desirable with a larger 8700mAh battery and a faster 16GB SSD capable of 50MB/s writes and 87MB/s reads. Of course, you can get the same 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and 8.9-inch screen in the 900A for $280, so the new 901GO's €399 ($505) pricetag seems perhaps a bit much, but the cutting edge ain't a cheap place to live, kids.[Via Electronista]Eee PC 901GO with faster...
