Nokia flings out two new colors of Supernova handsetsFiled under: Handsets, NokiaWe're always down with new shades of old mobiles, and we're particularly find of new ones that bring along something extra. Nokia has just expanded its Supernova range with a Graphite and Passionate Purple Supernova 7610, 7510, 7310 and 7210. Each of the newcomers also brings along "enhanced services" that enable users to "share their images and video with friends through Ovi Share, as well as keep up to date with friends via Nokia Maps and instant messaging with Windows Live Messenger." There's no mention of pricing, so we'll go out a limb and assume they'll remain...

Citrix aims to brings desktop virtualization to Apple's iPhoneFiled under: Software, AppleCitrix and Apple have been linked before under less positive terms, but word on the street has it that the former will soon be expanding its desktop virtualization software onto the iPhone. If successful, PC and Mac users would be able to access the same desktop session on their iPhone and their desktop, and moving "seamlessly between the two" would be a lesson in simplicity. Reportedly, the capability will be a part of the outfit's App Receiver, which is described as "a software client that would be installed on both a user's computer and mobile phone, and...

Nokia patent app suggests N97's form factor isn't complicated enoughFiled under: Nokia, Misc Combining huge screens with usable keyboards in a pocketable package is the challenge phone manufacturers are eternally doomed to try to solve, leading to an endless stream of (mostly comical) patent applications for ridiculous form factors that will never see the light of day. That's where we think -- well, we hope -- Nokia's latest app comes into play, combining a portrait-oriented QWERTY keyboard with a wide display that somehow swivels behind the body of the phone when you only need a little bit of screen real estate. Looks cool on paper, but realistically, we think...

Court to T-Mobile, AT&T: your voicemail ain't secure, so stop saying otherwiseFiled under: ATT, T-Mobile, MiscThanks to SpoofCard, AT&T and T-Mobile now owe some cash in the state of California, and the rest of us have been given one more reason to lie awake at night. The service -- of questionable non-illegal value -- reports your Caller ID phone number as anything you like, and injunctions filed in Los Angeles demand that the carriers stop advertising their voicemail services as being secure, considering that they can be set to rely on the calling phone number alone to connect to a specific voicemail box. For their indiscretions, AT&T will be coughing up...

Apple and AT&T bring back iPhone home activationFiled under: Handsets, ATT, AppleOnline shoppers looking to spend the holiday season firmly planted on the couch can add the iPhone 3G back to their lists -- we've just confirmed that Apple and AT&T have quietly brought back in-home activation. Sure, it's been available in limited circumstances before, but now it's here and for real, just like with the first-gen unit. Would-be unlockers looking to score a phone for $199 flat can't start celebrating just yet, though -- you'll still have to provide your billing details and face an ETF if you don't activate within a set period of time....

Mysterious T-swivel handset appears on Korean site, keeps us guessingFiled under: Handsets Here's a Sunday challenge for you -- what in tarnation is this thing? The mysterious T-swivel type handset has appeared on a Korean site, presumably signifying its status as a simple concept. Obviously, the device packs a full QWERTY keyboard, a front-mounted camera, a rather sizable display and a swivel contraption to keep things horizontal when texting and the like. Beyond that, your guess is as good as ours here. Any clues on this thing's origins? We only ask because, you know, we'd love to actually toy around with one.[Via Pocketables]Mysterious T-swivel handset appears on Korean site,...

Acer-branded smartphone (purportedly) still on for 2009Filed under: Handsets, Others, E-TENFor the third time this year, we're hearing straight from totally unofficial, somewhat sketchy Acer sources that the firm is still planning on producing its own smartphone in 2009. The latest report has company chairman JT Wang stating that the eventual launch may not happen until Q2 2009 (red flag), and he blamed the possible delay on the ongoing negotiations with carriers across the globe. If you'll recall, Acer's been talking up its own phone ever since it took E-Ten Information Systems in under its wings, but many months later, we still have no concrete evidence...

Nokia will gladly include DAB support on handsets... after it's popularFiled under: Handsets, Multimedia, Nokia This folks, is a classic case of "chicken before the egg." Reportedly, Nokia's director of product and technology marketing Sari Stahlberg was quoted as saying that "when the technology reaches mass adoption we would consider putting DAB radios into our phones," but rather than supporting it now and assisting the technology in becoming adopted en masse, it's fine to just wait things out. He continued with: ""The more the technology is adopted across Europe and other territories, the more chance it's got of being included." Translation? "We'll gladly pull the trigger once it's safe, but...

Keepin' it real fake, part CLXXI: iFone 3G is more than phonetically inaccurateFiled under: Handsets, Others, Apple Not even 24 hours after discovering the completely befuddling iFone x1 comes this, something entirely more recognizable, yet just as wrong. The iFone 3G is -- so far as we can tell -- the first mass produced KIRF of the iPhone 3G, and if history has anything to prove, it'll be just the first in a long, long linage. The best part? The whole "3G" thing in the model name is not representative of actual data band support, so the best you'll do on this heap of festering rubbish is EDGE. At the $5 to...

SIM / hardware-unlocked Android Dev Phone 1 surfaces for $399Filed under: Handsets, HTC, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, Android Oh, snap! Out of seemingly nowhere, Google has revealed the Android Dev Phone 1, a SIM- and hardware-unlocked G1 designed to be sold exclusively to hard working developers. The handset ships with a system image that's fully compatible with Android 1.0, and obviously, it complies with any SIM card and can "flash custom Android builds that will work with the unlocked bootloader." In other words, the mobile should seriously appeal to devs who live far, far away from areas blanketed with T-Mobile coverage. In order to get one, you must first register...

FCC FridaysFiled under: Features We here at Engadget Mobile tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol' Federal Communications Commission's site. Since we couldn't possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there, we've gathered up all the raw info you may want (but probably don't need). Keepin' it real fake, part CLXX: the highly confused (and confusing) iFone x1Filed under: Handsets, Others How would you improve the XPERIA X1? If you answered, "remove the keyboard and add a mangled iPhone UI," then the iFone x1 will be right right up your alley. Of course, this ain't the first phony X1 we've seen, but it might be our fave. What can we say about this one? It appears to be running Windows CE, it quite possibly supports dual SIM cards, and it has an FM receiver (probably). Does that excite you? In the mood for a good laugh? In either case, be sure to check out the hilariously mangled...

Nokia tables v31 firmware for aging N95Filed under: Handsets, Nokia, Symbian Nokia's aging N95 has gotten an early holiday gift in the form of a firmware update bringing it up to v31. Aside from being one "vee" higher, mum's the word on what exactly is getting overhauled with this massive 140MB update. So if you're sitting on an N95 and feel inspired to drop us a line with your update observations, we'd welcome the info. Though, remember, all manner of things can go wrong while performing firmware surgery, so please back up your goods before getting to work. Nokia tables v31 firmware for aging N95 originally...

Sony Ericsson's Filippa, Frances, and C510 Kate spotted in the same room?Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, GSMMankind has never known a greater mystery than that of the true identity of "Kate." We knew it was a camera phone, manufactured by Sony Ericsson, and that it was part of the Cyber-shot line -- but beyond that all we had was speculation and innuendo. And here's some more! According to SEMC Blog, Kate -- officially known as the C510 -- should be available in roughly "two months." The camera sports a 2.2-inch QVGA display, 3.2-megapixel camera and 120MB on board storage. Also detailed were Filippa, a new Cybershot candybar, and Frances, its slider...

Russian HTC MAX 4G reviewed by non-Russian reviewerFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Windows Mobile, GSM, WiMAX Been pining for more information on HTC's chunky GSM / WiMAX handset, the HTC MAX 4G? Read on, comrade, because you've come to the right place: "friendly Malaysian guy" and blogger nextimelah has imported one and given a full review of the phone -- well, as full as you can get when you can't read Cyrillic. You see, the phone is still only available at Russian provider Yota and, while you might think a phone like this would offer an English mode, the language is apparently integrated into the device's ROM. So...

Symbian S60 HTML Editor: one less reason to own a PCFiled under: Software, Symbian Okay, so it's not like you're going to want to build entire websites from scratch using this application, but it's still nice to have in a pinch. The S60 HTML Editor requires only an S60-based smartphone, Python and the appuifw2 extension module; from there, users can indulge in simple HTML editing for tweaks on the run. Before you laugh it off, how do you know this post wasn't hand-coded using this very program? Huh? You're right, it wasn't.[Via IntoMobile]Symbian S60 HTML Editor: one less reason to own a PC originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue,...

Irony: Nokia N97's designer is JapaneseFiled under: NokiaJust days after announcing its full withdrawal (well, Vertu excepted) from the brutally competitive domestic Japanese phone market, what does Nokia do? It goes and announces a phone fully capable of hanging with the very best that the home field players like Sharp, Casio, and Toshiba have to offer on their own turf. That alone is kind of funny -- but the real irony here is that the N97's designer, Shunjiro Eguchi, is Japanese. We've heard of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em," but we're not familiar with the "if you can't beat 'em, quit 'em and...

T-Mobile Shadow II gets FCC-style unveilingFiled under: Handsets, HTC, T-Mobile, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE This thing's been in the pressure cooker for ages now, but it looks like T-Mobile might finally be getting within a stone's throw of actually releasing (or at the very least, announcing) the Shadow II, successor to the Shadow -- HTC's funky little Windows Mobile Standard slider targeted squarely at a consumer audience. The new model moves to WinMo 6.1 from 6 (we should certainly hope so), and as rumored, it appears to now support HotSpot WiFi-based calling. It's no G1 on the geek scale, but if you're looking to somehow...

This Windows Mobile 6.1 3G device sports a 624MHz CPU, 128 MB RAM, with mini USB and microSD slots, WiFi, a 3-megapixel camera, GPS, and an accelerometer to boot.
