With all of the attention focused on newspapers and their troubles, few have noticed that the 4 broadcast networks are in pretty bad shape as well. Their share of consumer television time is dropping at the same time advertisers are cutting back on their TV ad spend budgets as those dollars shift to new media marketing programs. Some executives are now talking about something dramatic, the idea that it’s not necessary to have an affiliate network supporting local regions and cities as part of a broadcast network. This is exactly how cable channels operate, they sell their feed to cable...

The Insider Launches Facebook Connect ServiceThe Insider, a site for celebrity gossip and other entertainment news has launched a service that takes advantage of Facebook Connect. I had a chance to check out the integration and it’s pretty interesting. Unfortunately many of the features weren’t loading correctly but a few of them were. One of the key benefits of the Facebook Connect integration is the ability to comment on stories using an automatically generated profile. The service also immediately tells you which of your friends are on the site. Not surprisingly, none of my friends were already using the site. This is one of many...

The Badoop Badoop Show, The Best of Video Downloads, And Try This All Hit TiVoCastTiVo’s just added three more channels to TiVoCast, and they all appear to be a bit self-referential. Not surprising as all three are grouped under TiVo Channels on the website. First up, I mentioned The Badoop Badoop Show when it launched on YouTube last month. It is a short-form entertainment program hosted by TiVoShanan. Since its inception, the Emmy® award-winning TiVo service has changed the way millions of people watch TV. And coming soon: the “The Badoop Badoop Show,” a quirky show to keep you in the entertainment know with TiVo recommendations every week on what to watch, hear, download...

Analyst: Video Could Choke the WebThe explosive demand for online video -- while great for media companies -- could throttle network capacity and ultimately stall online advertising growth, according to one analyst. "Video is set to become the preeminent online vehicle for entertainment, news and sports by early next decade -- if it is not already," says David Hallerman, an analyst at eMarketer. One potential outcome, theorizes Hallerman, is that as online video migrates to the web, demand for capacity spikes and resources become strained. ISPs will then start metering broadband services, and consumers get turned off of the web. "If bandwidth costs are metered,...

AOL Launches New “Globally Local” Blog NetworkAOL has launched a new magazine-style blog site that attempts to combine entertainment news with city-based stories. Digital City describes itself as having “a local slant, but global appeal.” Officially announced this morning, the site’s front page now features a post talking about celebrity birthdays and other noteworthy occasions on 9/29. Perusing the site further will uncover everything from food and nightlife-related news to holiday-specific content and even travel talk. Oddly, for a site with “local slant,” the site doesn’t let you enter your own city to find local information relevant to you (at least, not in any easily located...

The future of the Web is 3D, not video YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley has posted an interesting description of his company's long-term plans and prospects. YouTube's (and Google's) goal is to allow anyone to easily upload video to the 'Net and make that content available on any device. He also makes a bold prediction that online video will be the "most ubiquitous and accessible form of communication" in ten years. I would like to offer a counterpoint to Hurley's vision. While I don't dispute the impact of online video and its growing importance to the way people produce and consume media, I believe that online video is limited...
