Microsoft Messenger variants, such as MSN Messenger, Windows Live Messenger or Windows Messenger, sometimes cause difficulties during uninstallation throwing error messages such as “Another version of the product is already installed”, “Your computer has a newer version of MSN Messenger than the one you are trying to install”, ““Your computer has a newer version of Windows Live Messenger than the one you are trying to install” or “The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable”. It can be quite frustrating to discover the root of the problem especially when the user wants a...
Yesterday BBC reported on a study carried out after a working spam network had been hijacked by scientists from University of California, Berkeley and UC, San Diego. The network studied uses infected home computers to send junk mail in mass volumes instead of using servers of its own. It is reported that at one time the network controlled over a million of machines. To make the study possible the scientists seized control over a small part of the network and sent out spam messages themselves to see how recipients will react. A total of 469 million junk emails have been...
Not everyone is a fan of changing the looks of an operating system. Some users are perfectly happy with the default skin it shipped with and would never think of changing the interface. There is however a kind of user who likes to change the appearance of a computer system. From changing themes to adding gadgets, wallpapers and fonts. ViOrb Remastered is one small tool that might be one of those that this user groups loves. It does not do more than to replace the Windows XP start button with the Windows vista’s start button. That’s pretty straightforward with no...

Access files on the go with Box.net's iPhone app.(Credit: CNET Networks) If you're done playing around with Google Earth for the iPhone, you might be interested in checking out something with some every day utility. Last week Box.net dropped its iPhone application on the app store. Just like the mobile Safari-friendly version of yore, this lets you access your cloud-stored files on the go, including documents, music and movies. The big difference is that this new version takes advantage of your phone's hardware, letting you upload snapped photos and keep an eye on any updates. In the future, once Apple...
While Nintendo hasn't even announced the next Wii, a DigiTimes source claims that a company named Pixart Imaging is already set to provide Nintendo with the infrared chips for their next generation Wii device. (Pixart already supports the current Wiimote and products from Intel and Logitech.) While not necessarily the worst news, I'm sure at least a few of us were hoping for a solution to avoid those constant "point your Wiimote at the screen" error messages. Oh well, Nintendo could release the Wii2 with non-interactive, rotting banana controller and it would still sell a bajillion units. [DigiTimes via MaxConsole]...
Here’s a public service message: Back up your computer regularly. This has more to do with your pocketbook than you might think. Not only was I sick this week, but the hard drive on my laptop crashed. It’s gone. The Apple Geniuses (that’s what they call themselves!) cannot salvage it. I was able to pull the single most important document (the GRS spreadsheet) and a few posts-in-progress, but I lost a hell of a lot, including: Several electronic gift certificates. (I’ll contact the companies to see if they have provisions for cases like this.) Two years of other e-mail, including...
Filed under: Web services, Google, web 2.0, Android I'm pretty addicted to Twitter, so the very first application I sought out for Grant's T-Mobile G1 was an Android-based Twitter client. Unsurprisingly, the Android Market didn't have anything to meet my needs, but I did manage to stumble upon Twitroid, which as far as I can tell, is the only Android-based Twitter client available at this time.Although the first official release will not be available until Monday (and the devs expect it in the Android Market shortly after), you can download the 0.7 pre-release version from twitroid.mobi. First, you need to...
Developer / Product Page: HAMSoft Engineering / Product page Price: $5 donation requestedIf you work with disk images at all, it's likely you've been thwarted at some point when trying to eject an image -- you'll get a generic message about not being able to eject the image because it's "in use." As is typical of many error messages, this one doesn't actually contain any information needed to help solve the problem -- you're not told which file is in use, just that something is in use.Regular readers here probably know that you can use lsof to identify the...
