As most of you probably already know, WordPress is expanding far beyond a blogging platform, towards a complete Content Management System (CMS). In simple words, this means that the WordPress open source software can be used to build virtually any type of website, including blogs, company sites and online stores. One of the features that WordPress introduced to walk in that direction was the ability to be able to use a static front page. You just need to click on “Settings” and then “Reading,” and select which of your pages should be displayed as the static homepage. It is a...
If You Are Going To Use a Static Homepage, Hand Code It in WordPress - (jeff)isageek
That's rubbish. No reason to waste your time hand coding, other than a vague concern about duplicate content. If you're really worried, have the duplicate page redirect to the front page, or pop the duplicate in robots.txt. - Joshua Nunn

Sneakey Robbers Turn to the Social Web"Leave your keys in your pocket," is the advice given by computer programmers at University of California San Diego who recently created 'Sneakey' software; an application that uses a digital image of a key to produce an exact copy in physical form within minutes. According to Stefan Savage, the computer science professor who led the project, advances in digital imaging have made it so easy that even a low resolution photo from a cell phone offers enough information to decode and reproduce a key. Sponsor In a recent publication (PDF), Sneakey is described as "simplistic enough that someone with no...

DEMOfall 08: Real Networks launches RealDVD for ripping DVDs to PCs Real Networks has a nifty new service dubbed RealDVD. You can basically load all of your DVDs into your computer’s hard drive — legally — so that you can watch them on the computer. RealDVD takes an exact copy of a DVD and puts it on the hard drive. It looks up the cover art for the movie so you can see it on a graphical menu. You can even play a movie while you’re saving it to the hard drive. For those with large collections, you can save it to an external hard drive. Those movies show up...

It allows people to sort the collection by genre, rating or actor, and save a DVD and play it at the same time. The software, which is legal, follows the model that people use with their music CDs now. It...

Home Depot needs some repo Admit it--when you hear the words "copyright violation," the first place you think of is China; you probably don't think of, say, Home Depot. Well, check out the two lamps up top. Recognize 'em? Can you even tell 'em apart? Here's the deal, from an NYC tipster: Right now the Home Depot on 23rd Street [in Manhattan] is selling an almost exact copy of the Starck-designed Miss K Lamp by Flos. Only [Home Depot's version] is missing the half-chrome plating on the inside of the shade, which is the whole concept of the original design, and the plastic quality...

Starz Closes Online Movie Service Vongo; Focus on Partners; Clickstar's Dead StarStarz Entertainment, owned by Liberty Entertainment, has closed down its anemic online movie service Vongo, according to a post on its site. Existing users can use the service until Sept 30th. The move is not a surprise, considering it did a deal with Verizon in May, where it launched Starz Play, an exact copy of Vongo service but as a white-label for the telco. Vongo was a replacement launched two years ago for its earlier movie service JV with RealNetworks (NSDQ: RNWK) called Starz Ticket. Vongo was one of the few sites offering consumers unlimited downloading of recent movie releases,...

From Scrabulous to Wordscraper: Does the new game pass legal muster? Scrabulous got them in trouble, but will Wordscraper fly? After Hasbro filed a copyright and trademark infringement lawsuit against the developers of Scrabulous, the Indian brothers who came up with the popular Facebook application introduced a new word game -- Wordscraper. Unlike Scrabble, to which Hasbro owns the copyrights and trademarks, Wordscraper has round tiles instead of square ones. Its tiles don't display the points associated with each letter as in Scrabble. And the point system is arranged differently on the board, which also introduces a quadruple word score that's not available in authorized Scrabble. Wordscraper, however, does let...
