The Unforgettable Amnesiacjamie found an account in the NYTimes of the life and death of one of the most important figures in modern neuroscience, Henry Gustav Molaison — a man who could not form memories. Molaison became an amnesiac after a brain operation in 1953. Known worldwide as H.M., Molaison was studied intensively for 55 years. Dr. Brenda Milner, a psychologist from Montreal, was the first researcher to visit Molaison. In 1962 she authored a landmark study demonstrating that a part of Molaison's memory was fully intact. "The implications were enormous. Scientists saw that there were at least two systems in the...

Faces Of The Day Two children are pictured on December 5, 2008 at an internally displaced people (IDP) camp near Kibati in Nord-Kivu. The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo and a rebel movement are to meet on December 8, in Kenya to formalise a ceasefire, Kinshasa's foreign minister said Friday, raising hopes of an end to months of fighting in the east of the country. At the same time Congolese and Rwandan armed forces are to launch operations against Rwandan Hutu rebels operating in the same region following two days of talks, a statement said. The UN refugee agency said Friday...

Inking by Numbers - Tattoos in Cape Town Araminta De Clermont documents the prison tattoos of the Numbers Gangs from the Cape Town Flats. These men have literally covered themselves with tattoos, extending across their faces. She found many of her subjects roaming homeless in bus stations and soup kitchens; the same tattoos that marked them with respect inside prison, left them unemployable on the outside. Washington To Obama, Morphed (VIDEO) — Someone took the time to morph all the faces of the 43 presidents and the one president-elect, into each other. It's interesting because it graphically makes a point made so often since Election Day and that will likely be made for a long time going forward, that President-elect Barack Obama gives the presidency a strikingly new and different look. Maurice Ravel's "Bolero" as a soundtrack wouldn't have been my choice. A better choice might have been a loop of the musical introduction of Aaron Copeland's "A Lincoln Portrait." Or how about "Hail to the Chief?"...

Roy Greenslade: Richard Addis offers reasons to be cheerfulWe journalists all need reasons to be cheerful just now. Richard Addis thinks he knows how to put a smile on our faces, offering five reasons: 1. There's a growing public demand for serious journalism; 2. Over the next three years media owners will start to support "good" journalism; 3. It's an open field. Anyone can be the next Joseph Pulitzer; 4. Attractive populism is a real possibility; 5. Print has a great future. You'll need to see his reasoning on his blog here.Press & publishingguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject...

Bags with FACES#8: An orange manbagThe least-thrilling and most occasional feature in internet history is back. Thankfully, due to how the pages work, it'll soon scroll away into oblivion and we can all say we don't remember it if anyone asks."A bag with a face. The Pretty Boy 5500 (XXL). It's looking a little worried, possibly about the illness which has turned it orange." "Also a hedge with a face. I think it's a rabbit....

Talking Thumbs Commercial: Cute or Nightmarish?Maybe I just have very little patience for creepy gadget commercials, but I still have to say: What were these marketing people thinking putting faces on thumbs?! I get a cold shiver for every pair of faces that appear on rapidly typing thumbs, but maybe I'm just a baby. What do you think?...

Franken Camp: We're Down 73 Votes, Will Pursue Legal Actions If Needed — The Minnesota Senate recount is getting incredibly tight. According to officials from the Al Franken campaign, the margin separating the Democratic challenger and Sen. Norm Coleman is now down to 73 votes out of approximately 2.9 million cast. Several weeks into the recount, 88.6% of the ballots have been counted, a slight majority of which came from Coleman supporters. As noted by Franken campaign lawyer Marc Elias, in the counties whose ballots have been counted, Al Franken won 49.6% of the vote on Election Day. In the counties who have not finished counting, Al Franken won 52.8% of the vote...

Nokia unveils Home Control Center Home automation used to be something you only saw in futuristic movies, but it seems like the idea of controlling everything in your home via mobile phone or computer is becoming more and more common. Nokia is taking existing systems and solutions a step further by hitting every spot in the home, from security systems and lighting to home entertainment and sprinkler systems. One of the big functions the Finns are highlighting is the ability to control and monitor energy usage in the home, which will undoubtedly put a big smile on Greenpeace faces and other environmentally conscious people....

Immersion NYT magazine has a video (above) on photographer Robbie Cooper's new project Immersion. From the write up of the slideshow:These images of kids playing video games were created by Robbie Cooper, a British photographer who employed a Red camera — a very-high-resolution video camera — and then took stills from the footage. Cooper, who says he was inspired by the camera technique that Errol Morris used to interview people in his documentaries, arranged his equipment so that the players were actually looking at a reflection of the game on a small pane of glass. He placed the camera behind...

Explanation For 'Face Blindness' OfferedFor the first time, scientists have been able to map the disruption in neural circuitry of people suffering from congenital prosopagnosia, sometimes known as face blindness, and have been able to offer a biological explanation for this intriguing disorder. Currently thought to affect roughly two percent of the population, congenital prosopagnosia manifests as the lifelong failure to recognize faces in the absence of obvious neurological damage, and in individuals with intact vision and intelligence....
