Like many of us, I spend quite a lot of time on the web and come across a staggering number of interesting things. In Clearing The Cache I pull out some of my favorites and share them with you here. Emotiv's "mind-reading" controller is a press darling, mainly because it's really cool. Apparently, though, Emotiv won't have the headset ready to go for the planned December release, because it doesn't, strictly speaking, well, work. Based on electroencephalography technology (or EEG to the interested layman), a properly functioning Epoc isn't out of the realm of possibility. But after a series of failed press appearances, starting just after the announcement and culminating in an glitchy gaming failure which I witnessed firsthand at the Intel Developer Forum, the product just doesn't look like it's ready. BigDownload spoke to a PR rep for the...
Filed under: News, Blogging, Web services, web 2.0 Do you still use your Pownce account? I stopped using mine months ago. I don't even know if I remember the password. If you do still use Pownce, the Twitter-like microblogging service that just never seemed to capitalize on its early hype, start preparing to migrate to something new. Today, Six Apart, the company behind Movable Type, TypePad and Vox, announced that it has acquired Pownce and will be shuttering the service in two weeks. Lead Pownce developers Leah Culver and Mike Malone will continue on at Six Apart, where presumably some...
Mark/Space advertises their Missing Sync for BlackBerry with an image of a BlackBerry Bold on their home page. They also issued this press release on November 11, 2008 pronouncing “full synchronization support for BlackBerry Bold”. So you’d think that the product would synchronize data between a BlackBerry and a Mac Address Book (also prominently displayed on their home page). Wrong. At first it looked as if my contacts were synching up just perfectly. Unfortunately after my second and subsequent synchronizations the contacts on my BlackBerry Bold doubled. And apparently there’s no way around this except to walk through a...
How do you interview for job openings on your team? Do you let people show their strengths during their interview, or do you make sure they fit into what you expect someone who is already successful at the job do? I try to ask questions that get people talking about themselves, and why they are uniquely qualified to do the job. Here are a few questions I ask to get at the heart of this: What are you passionate about? What’s the last book you read? If money were no object, and failure were not an option, what would...
For years, probably eight or so, I didn’t run races. I ran, I trained, I logged miles, but no races. Somewhere along the line I sort of lost the religion. It hurts to run a race. Having a time goal means being aware that I might not hit that goal, and who needs more failure? But when I moved to Seattle two plus years ago, my brother and I decided to run and train for some races. I have to say, the verdict has been mixed. I didn’t hit the time goal for the Beat The Bridge, I got injured...
