Steampunk art, fashion, design and mods are seen by some as a reaction to today’s generic, plastic gadgets that all look the same until one gets very, very close - practical yes, pleasing no. So polish up that monocle, bring on the brass and banish cookie-cutter clutter as Steampunk artists find thirteen more ingenious ways to redesign and refashion the world by hijacking hi-tech back to the future (past)! Getty Images The original Eee PC 2G Surf came in black, white, baby pink, spring green, and sky blue. When I saw that, I wondered if those colors would be for the kinds of people (okay, women) who bought Hello Kitty electronics. Yes, it’s very cute. But should a laptop, even a tiny laptop, be “cute”? I would prefer other colors: forest green, dark blue (thank you, Acer), fire engine red, etc. Colors that are bold and interesting, yet not limiting. Yes, there are probably some guys who would carry around a sky blue netbook. They carried iBooks, right? But...
We breathed a sigh of relief when we first discovered menswear label, Saint Augustine Academy. Since its inception in 2002, the Sydney-based team has risen to cult-status among individuals with a keen eye for sophistication and intelligent design. Playing on the lifestyle of a modern rock-and-roll star, the designers at Saint Augustine Academy are heavily inspired by the rock nouveau ethos that surrounded bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain. While slim fits and skinny ties are nothing new to the scene, the label keeps it fresh with edgy designs only a true whisky-consuming dandy would love. Designers Alvin...
We’re posting all the interviews from the sixth D: All Things Digital conference that took place in late May. Unfortunately, due to issues too complicated to go into, we have to post all the D6 interviews in several 15-minute parts (I know, I know). But–as many readers have requested–they will all be available in their entirety in this column. Here’s an interview Walt Mossberg did with Michael Dell, the founder of the once-high-flying computer maker who has returned as CEO. Dell was forced to resume the role in 2007 after changing market conditions caused the company to falter and competition...
Just like millions of other iPod owners around the world, you are daily flooded with news of new iPod accessories, and if you haven’t yet selected an iPod speaker dock or boombox of sorts, you’re definitely spoiled for choice. There are literally hundreds of options available, but don’t simply go plonking down your hard earned cash on any model as the manufacturer’s brand name certainly has a part to play. Memorex might not be at the forefront where iPod accessories are concerned, but their miniMove portable boombox is worth looking into as it attempts to merge both form and...

Paris-based photographer Gregoire Alexandre is currently exhibiting a selection of his work at the Atelier de Mecanique, in Parc des Ateliers. Christian Lacroix, a guest curator of the Recontres d’Arles 2008, chose to feature Alexandre, whose work he describes as “contemporary poetry” in the latest issue of Wallpaper. Alexandre has chosen from photographs taken between 2002 and 2008, the majority of which are the result of commissions from fashion, design, and music projects. The exhibit features no captions, titles or dates, leaving visitors to take each image at face value. According to Atelier de Mecanique: Gregoire Alexandre’s photographs are fuelled...
Filed under: Speakers We don't normally associate Boston Acoustics with high-fashion design, but its new Vista speakers definitely change that opinion. There will be six speakers in the range by the end of the year, so you should be able to put together a package with the desired amount of "surroundedness." To lead things off, the company will bring out the VS 336 floorstander ($1,700 each), VS 325C center channel ($900), VS 240 bookshelf ($400 each) and the VPS 210 subwoofer ($1,700). All these models have different-sized cones to fill in the bass end of their coverage, so let's hope...
"Baglady 2.0" is a performance piece that integrates a normal handbag with an antenna and embedded board that enables live, wireless sound, text, and video broadcasting. The bag also integrates GPS to integrate the location of the broadcast into the mix. Cameesa is a recently launched startup that wants to do for fashion what IndieGoGo is doing for movies. Unlike crowdsourcing where you get free labor, crowdfunding is where people "support" an idea and help is move to fruition. Here's how Cameesa works: Artists upload their fashion designs into the Cameesa system Supporters then provide funding to help the fashion design turn into a real product Assuming the product gets fully supported (100%), the fashion becomes an actual item for ordering in the Cameesa system At that point, the artist gets paid, the supporters get paid and buyers can place...
