In the beginning, Valve created Half-Life 2, and it was pretty flippin' awesome. Then, more towards the middle of the beginning, Garry Newman whipped up Garry's Mod, bestowing upon gamers a simple interface behind which they could all wield Valve's body-flinging, face-pinching powers. And after that, things got a little weird. But not for creator Garry Newman, who -- after selling his mod for $10 a pop on Steam -- found a new breadwinner. Now, two years later, Garry's Mod has stripped 312,541 kids of their lunch money, bringing the total haul up to roughly $3.1 million -- or about...
From Serious Eats Photograph from food_in_mouth on Flickr Hot beverage poetry doesn't get enough respect. The above example inspired me to write my own 5-7-5 metrical ode to hot chocolate: once just a powder but hot liquids transform you, brown winter mustache Let's see what you've got, fellow haikuists. Tis the season to run up your credit card la la la… Well that’s pretty true but what else is true is that American Express is getting in on the cyber monday fun. American Express credit card holders are able to purchase the T-mobile G1 for $125 dollars at specific times during the day. Unfortunately it looks as though only a handful are given away at the sale time but still, its always fun to try and get a deal online, without the consequences on brick and mortar fighting. You’re next chance is at 3pm (Eastern Standard Time) and...
I started blogging more than four years ago as a way to share pictures and stories with friends and family who lived far away. Soon after I began, I found out I was pregnant again, so the blog evolved into anecdotes about my pregnancy, complete with commentary on the weekly progress updates I received from Babycenter (ie. Congratulations! Your baby's eyelids are no longer fused shut.) I tried to post often, but it became difficult to find time with a newborn and a 20-month-old toddler. Eventually blogging fell to the wayside, replaced by my new favorite hobby--napping. I even...
You know how in trailers of terrible “family” movies there’s always a part where the announcers says, “Here we go again!” in that dumb “enthusiastic announcer guy voice”? Think of that right now, only juxtaposed with the sights and sounds of Liberty City, for it has been revealed that Grand Theft Auto IV uses SecurROM DRM. That’s the same DRM that upset so many would-be Spore players (but didn’t bother Fallout 3 players). Straight from a Rockstar rep: GTA IV PC uses SecuROM for protecting our EXE… Product Activation is a one time only online authentication when installing the...
George Bush Junior has somehow been president for eight years, and it’s no great surprise that much of the experience has been lost on him. All the ceaseless, pointless wars? The destruction of a major U.S. city? The collapse of our financial system? The cold fact that Americans are significantly dumber, fatter, sicker and poorer than they were when this clod took — literally, ha! — office? No real impact on our simple fellow. According to some weird interview Bush Junior did with, uhh, his sister or somebody like that, our greatest president will miss two things about being president:...
Filed under: Industry, Blu-ray Despite the general lameness of the economy at large, Blu-ray seems to be faring at least decently well overseas. We already heard that Blu-ray Disc sales were up 396% in the UK year-to-date, and we're getting even more positive vibes from a BDA European Promotions Group seminar held in Amsterdam this month. According to Frank Simonis, chairman of the aforesaid group, [Blu-ray] is "experiencing strong and solid growth in every national territory [in Europe]," even with the economic situation taken into consideration. Also in attendance was FutureSource Consulting's Jim Bottoms, who boldly predicted that "in Europe,...
...cross posted from our sister site, Los Angeles Moms Blog. Recently I was on a talk radio show with a few other guests and one mom jumped in with, "just to be clear. I am not a Mommy Blogger." Disdain dripped from each syllable. A little too perkily I jumped in the fray, "I am a Mommy Blogger." and the otherwise uneventful hour continued. It was only later in the evening that I realized my fellow blogger was trying to distance herself from me. She didn't want to be known as just a Mommy Blogger. She wants to be more...
I probably had about 4 drinks at YouTube Live (a concert, party and gathering in San Francisco on November 22, 2008). But I’m hungover the same way I was after visiting LA to shoot HBO Lab’s “Hooking Up” and “The Retarded Policeman.” Here are a few of the photos wifeofnalts took while I was busy gathering video footage. We also summed up our favorite moments in the video below. Jo (wifeofnalts) was rather smitten for Bo Burnham and Chad Hurley (YouTube’s founder). San Francisco was unbelievable. It was the first flight my wife and I have taken alone in a...
As you know I'm a big fan of TwitterCounter, and Boris, its creator and founder is one of the few Dutch entrepreneurs I'm actually a fan of, as he really seems to get the "new" web. I emailed him last week, asking why TwitterCounter didn't have an API, and we started talking about what an API should do. He started developing it, showed me some code, and then I offered him to develop the API myself. So I did, resulting in this API. On top of that API Sean Hammons already implemented a pane for getClicky, and I myself created...
