This has been an unusually engaging and entertaining anime. Even though I'm open to watching some anime (I love Miyazaki movies), most anime don't grab me the way this one did. I tried watching Naruto, but I found his dubbed voice to be shrill and annoying, and the action just didn't draw me in. Is there something else out there that might work?

- Kamilah Gill

Sherlock Hound is interesting: http://www.youtube.com/show?p=K162qI1LPF8&pl=33ACB44174B033ED and Miyazaki worked on some of the episodes. I also watched a few episodes of Bleach: http://www.hulu.com/bleach and enjoyed it, but its a bit darker than Avatar

- Sir Shuping

We caught a little bit of Bleach late at night on Adult Swim, and it did look intriguing. It just was confusing to come in at the middle, so I guess we'll have to borrow the start of the series (or check it out on Hulu). I don't mind if it's a little bit dark, as long as it's not just a bunch of gore and/or boobs and/or giant robots and doesn't make enough sense.

- Kamilah Gill

I just started watching this last week too (on demand Netflix is SWEET!). Love it and was thinking of asking this exact question! Thx Kamilah. :)

- Michael Porter

Hulu has it from the start till I think up to season 7. It def isn't a bunch of boobs/giant robots/or gore (at least from what I remember)

- Sir Shuping

here's a place where you can search by different categories: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/search/genre see what interests you

- Sir Shuping

Last Exile and Eureka Seven?

- ronin

Fullmetal Alchemist. D.Gray-man. Mushishi.

- ronin

Bleach is currently at 273 episodes and counting. There's big chunks interspersed in those that are just terrible filler episodes and side stories.

- ronin

Thanks for that warning about Bleach. However, it seems like one of the most easily accessible (seasons of it available for free on Hulu), so we still might try watching it... Are any of these others you mentioned also easy to find like that? I looked up some of them, and they do look interesting.

- Kamilah Gill

Mm, they should be available through Netflix. Not sure about Hulu though...

- ronin

Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, I just started watching one on Hulu called Nabari No Ou which is pretty cool 15 or so eps in. I never watched Naruto because of the dubbed voices, but I watched the subbed Naruto and Naruto Shippudden. (all of these are Hulu)

Seasons change, years roll by, children grow-up. NOW is the time for your Guitar Lessons. Online.

- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)

"Whether you’re an intermediate guitarist trying to decipher charts from your school’s music program or a professional player looking to expand your musical vocabulary, you’re ready for some one-on-one private guitar instruction, right? Problem… the commute’s a little far. Not anymore! No matter where on the planet (or beyond) you are, we can do lessons! You just need a webcam, computer and high-speed internet."

- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)

Education in music NEVER becomes obsolete. WIN!

Bump this every few weeks please for when i get around to playing again.

OK. But you should be practicing now. ;-)

Are there 3? I saw Johnny and Lis.

- Jimminy, CoG of FF

You got one right. :)

- Jon, the Beartato of '10

Yes!

- Alex Scoble

Well, Johnny is easy, you've already shown us what he looks like.

- Jimminy, CoG of FF

Of course. The other ones might be a little more difficult, which is the point. :D

- Jon, the Beartato of '10

Too hard for my small brain.

- Eric @ CSTechcast.com

Well, we've seen pics from them fairly recently.

Duuuuuur! One is Penguin

Yep. I have to think of a tough hint for the next one.

Maybe Lo, because I think you mentioned something about drawing her a few days ago.

Close. I'll probably get her in a future strip, though.

She said, "I'm drinking one of those negroes."

- Katy S

The reactions ranged from spit takes to dropped jaws to laughter among those who knew what she actually had.

- Katy S

o_O

- John (a.k.a. dendroica)

Typo in OP fixed - my fingers were typing while my mind was already at the end of the story.

- Katy S

For the record, I was simultaneously amused and horrified.

- Katy S

Is is OK that I adjusted for geography when reading?

- Julian

It could have been worse.

- John (a.k.a. dendroica)

Oh yeah, definitely. It was also funny b/c she wouldn't use that word to describe people - she uses black or african-american - so there was a bit of cognitive dissonance going on when we heard her say it.

- Katy S

best story ever.

- MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS

and personally?... I don't find "negro" offensive. I'm old enough to remember when it wasn't. But that's just me.

- MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS

I think this little story will be repeated for quite some time. :)

- Katy S

LOL. Wife and I are howling at this story.

- Ha3rvey (EPIC HUGS!)

agh, noooo. It's not offensive, really, just kind of inappropriate.

- Kamilah Gill

Yeah. That's why it was funny. If it had been really offensive or malicious, the story wouldn't have been amusing at all.

- Katy S

Oh lord. I'm so glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read this. I would've spit it all over my monitor when I laughed.

- Cecily (Dewey's Angels)

I did warn y'all that it was a spit take moment ;)

- Katy S

fwiw, I can't look at the leftover beer anymore without laughing. I might need to hide it away in the crisper so I can't see it.

Cartoon: Tweaty

There's a lot about Twitter that I find annoying: Auto DMs from people when I follow them ("Thanks for the follow! And please check out my acai berry multi-level marketing site!"). Random, Inspiration Lite™ quotations, stripped of all context. People who invent rules like "you have to follow everyone who follows you." (No, you don't. And you don't have to eavesdrop on an intelligence agency just because they tap your phone line - in fact, they discourage it.)

But just when I get crotchety enough to start shopping for a shawl and rocking chair, along comes what may be the one meme on Twitter that actually warms the cockles of my heart: Follow Friday.

Sponsor

(I'll pause here to let the derisive laughter die down.)

Let me stipulate: a lot of #ff tweets aren't much use. Some are just a random string of accounts; too many others recommend folks like @aplusk, @cnnbrk and @barackobama - not exactly out-of-the-box discoveries.

But I'm finding more and more #ff tweets that put recommendations into context, saying these people are funny, or inspirational, or smart. And I'm seeing others that use Follow Friday to offer thanks, express love or suggest that people reach out and offer some comfort or attention. And when people use it that way, I've found I actually do find interesting new folks to follow.

For all its faults and misuse, Follow Friday is adding a little to Twitter's growing pool of social capital. So TGIFF... and let's try to bring that spirit of generosity and gratitude to the other six days of the week.

Best guess: Likud mole Rahm Emanuel engineered Dennis Blair's ouster, in coordination with Emanuel's like-minded network within the Obama administration. Blair has been a leading obstacle to ratcheting up hysteria about Iran.

The rooms are wonderfully restored, more so than any other castle I've visited (e.g. Hearst Castle in California, Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuschwanstein_Castle) - every room is filled with furniture, paintings, etc... Even so, castles have been pretty ho-hum for me - I'd much rather see creative modern architecture. But the gardens kick-butt! Designed by the same guy who did Manhattan's Central Park.

- Mitchell Tsai

Best rose garden I've ever seen (There's a rose garden in Raleigh which I visited a few days ago). Probably helps that visitors pay $50-60 to visit. The number of bushes, plants, etc... which were planted is staggering. 200,000-600,000 from what I remember - many sprouted on-site.

- Mitchell Tsai

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biltmore_Estate It stands today as one of the most prominent remaining examples of the Gilded Age, and of significant gardens in the Garden à la française and English Landscape garden styles in the United States. In 2007, it was ranked eighth on the List of America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.

- Mitchell Tsai

Gifford Pinchot and later Carl Schenck were hired to manage the forests, with Schenck establishing the first forestry education program in the U.S., the Biltmore Forest School, on the estate grounds in 1898. Intending that the estate could be self-supporting, Vanderbilt set up scientific forestry programs, poultry farms, cattle farms, hog farms and a dairy.

- Mitchell Tsai

Vanderbilt paid little attention to the family business or his own investments, and it is believed that the construction and upkeep of Biltmore depleted much of his inheritance. After Vanderbilt died of complications from an emergency appendectomy in 1914, his widow, Edith Stuyvesant Vanderbilt, finalized the sale of 85,000 of the original 125,000 acres (507 km²) to the federal government (in respect to her husband's wish that the land remain unaltered), which became the nucleus of Pisgah National Forest.

- Mitchell Tsai

...house was featured in the "Richie Rich" movie (1994). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richie_Rich_(film) These massive estates are fun to view...but no one can maintain them...even the ultra-rich. Too costly.
