iFart And Pull My Finger Battle To Stink Up The App Store. Please Keep These Under Control, Apple. Earlier today we learned that Apple had decided to allow a new genre of apps into the app store with the release of Pull My Finger, a humorous but simple application that emits predictably nasty sounds whenever users pull on a virtual finger. The application was intitally rejected by Apple, sparking debate over the seemingly arbitrary standards it was using in its approval process. Today’s policy shift sets the stage for imitators looking to build on the irreverent success of Pull My Finger, and we’ve already got our next contender in the battle for flatulence supremacy. It’s called iFart,...

How to Find Your “How To” TopicThis is Evan Brammer’s submission for the HP Magic Giveaway. Feel free to leave comments for this article as you see fit - your feedback is certainly welcomed! If you’d like to submit your own how-to, what-is, or top-five list, you can send it to me. Views and opinions of this writer are not necessarily my own: As I was mulling over the possibilities for my entry, while tossing ideas back and forth with my wife, I realized that I just could not think of anything. What should I teach everyone “how to” do? I don’t know. I suppose it...

Where is Technology Headed? This is Taylor Trevathan’s submission for the HP Magic Giveaway. Feel free to leave comments for this article as you see fit - your feedback is certainly welcomed! If you’d like to submit your own how-to, what-is, or top-five list, you can send it to me. Views and opinions of this writer are not necessarily my own: As newer and better technology replaces the old, one may realize that the replacement gadgets tend to get smaller, and smaller, and smaller. Is there such a thing as too portable or too small? To what point do we say that we are...

Use Your Fingers to Tap Out The Jams [Music]For some reason, rhythms I produce by nervously tapping my fingers do not translate well to musical instruments. However, this "Jam" concept could help fidgety individuals like myself become musical virtuosos. A central hub wirelessly links the Jam finger taps together allowing one, or several people to play sound clips by tapping their fingers on a solid surface. The harder you tap, the louder the volume. You could even change the pitch by dragging your finger along the playing surface. Unfortunately, Jam is only a concept at the moment, so it looks as though I will have to stick with...

Logitech serves one-billionth mouse Look, we're not going to go and get all sappy about Logitech shipping it's billionth mouse. After all, we still prefer our fingers for pointing and keyboards for quick navigation around the ol' computer. Still, a claim of one billion served is always notable, be it computer peripherals or hamburgers. Logitech's very first mouse was the Logitech P4 introduced in 1982. For the very first mouse ever, you'll have to contact Douglas Engelbart, its inventor. Or just click on over the break for pics of the P2 and Engelbarts original toothless sawblade.Continue reading Logitech serves one-billionth mouseFiled under: PeripheralsLogitech...

Doobiebot is Harbinger of a Future Where Pot is Legal [Robots] I love this little bot whose fingers are made of roach clips. In the future, when pot is legal and alcohol-drinking is for people who experiment with dangerous retro-drugs, you'll be able to choose from a whole line of doobiebots who scoot around with burning joint-ends and say things like "Dude, don't bogart that joint!" We've got more doobiebots below. OK, I'll admit it. These aren't really doobiebots. They're merely cool robots who JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE ROACH CLIPS FOR HANDS. Nifty Junkbots from Columbia [via MAKEzine]...

Engadget's Holiday Gift Guide: for son It's not easy to shop for the kids these days, and it's definitely a major challenge when it comes to finding the right holiday gift for the increasingly tech-savvy young men of the world. In an environment plagued with cheapo USB Crapgadgets and the ever-present possibility of obsoletion before gifting, Engadget is here to help separate the wheat from the chaff (and invoke all other manner of clichés, we hope). Sit back, relax, let your fingers do the walking, and take a chill pill as we cut through the red tape and help you make an informed decision with...

MOJO HD officially passes away: an unceremonious reminderFiled under: Industry, MOJO Well over 1.5 months after parent company iNDEMAND confirmed that MOJO HD was being canned, the day has finally come for it to expire. We know, you were crossing your fingers and summoning all sorts of good fortune in hopes of it magically staying active after the December 1st date with Dr. Death (sorry for the Dr. Danger reminder), but it just wasn't to be. Here's to you, MOJO HD, and all the outstanding (and lackluster) programming you've delivered over the years. Time for a "best MOJO moment" list in comments? We vote yes.[Thanks, Tom]MOJO HD...

BMW uses Microsoft Surface Microsoft’s Surface technology has many uses, but one interesting way to use it is how it is being used by BMW. Here is a video that shows you how rich slobs can explore BMW cars with just their delicate and un-calloused fingers “The Ultimate Driving Machine” being optimized with “BMW Product Navigator”. The touch screen system lets snooty BMW buyers configure their new car in a whole new interactive way. The exteriors and the interiors can be reviewed even before the car is purchased. That includes the color of the car. The Richy Riches of the word can now...

BMW First Car Company to Implement Microsoft Surface [Microsoft Surface] — By allowing its snooty customers to manipulate the snooty Microsoft Surface interface with their snooty fingers, BMW has officially become the first car maker to offer the touchscreen tech to a worldwide car-buying audience. Impressed? Me neither, but that's just because I'm a low-paid writer who's insanely jealous of anyone driving a car that's hotter than my 2006 Mercury Milan. So, basically everyone. As you can see in the video, there's nothing ground-breaking here, save for some fancy cars and interactive swatches for interior and exterior colors (the software was developed by Vectorform for BMW, btw). If you're up for...

Interesting reading: Snipers, rifles, and current ballistics researchThe Reg has an uncharacteristically long article up today concerning the history of snipers and their equipment. The tools of the trade have been changing since the first long-range rifles were truly deployed in WWII, and sniping has increased in effectiveness and importance as technology has made weapons more lethal and reduced the size of engagement parties. Counter-Strike and Call of Duty players will be familiar with the models mentioned (The Arctic Warfare Magnum or “AWP” from CS for instance), but there’s interesting context and other considerations as well — business concerns, technical problems with caliber, etc. DARPA has its...

Touchgrind in the App StoreFiled under: Gaming, Odds and ends, iPhone, App Store, iPod touch I remain a complete non-fan of "fingerboarding," or skateboarding on a miniature skateboard with your fingers, but on the other hand (so to speak), I'm a huge fan of physics, especially on a touchscreen, so I'm torn about the release of Touchgrind, which has now made its way into the App Store for $4.99. Playing with a tiny skateboard in real-life seems kind of silly. But playing with a virtual skateboard that responds realistically to your fingers flipping and tapping on a multitouch screen could be really, really awesome...

Good old Rarst posted another interesting article today about 10 things that make tech blogs unreadable. He has become quite the little ranter over at his Rarst stronghold but I have to admit that he has a point. His post got me thinking about aspects of tech blogs that I dislike and I came up with enough stuff to make my own /diggworthy/ list. Interestingly enough that is also number one on my list.. 1. Writing For Digg or Other Social Networks The 10, Top 20, The Best.. Many articles that are written to make the Digg crowd digg the...
