Calacanis Relaunches Mahalo As Yahoo Answers CloneJason Calacanis -- best known for making real money off blogs before most anyone else knew what they were -- today re-launched his one year-old human-powered search engine Mahalo as Mahalo Answers. It's like Yahoo's popular Yahoo Answers product, except questioners can offer virtual currency for good answers. Good answerers can then convert their virtual currency into real cash and Mahalo will take 25% off the top. Our favorite thing about Mahalo Answers? How it is so very Calacanis. His model is to take a popular amateur activity from the Web, like blogging or creating Wikipedia pages, and turning them...

The Facebook Virus is back Koobface, aka The Facebook virus is back with new reports on widespread infections. The Facebook virus was first reported in August, and emails Facebook users from friend accounts telling them that they look great in a movie and they should view the movie, or in one incarnation suggest that there’s embarrassing video footage online about the user. When users click through, they hit a YouTube style video site and are prompted to download a file to play the videos. Not surprisingly, at this point the words “it’s a trap” are appropriate because the download is a trojan. Advice from...

Sharp fires up 43 LCD tree for the ho-ho-HOPE ProgramFiled under: Industry, Displays, Sharp, LCD New Yorkers passing through Grand Central Terminal will be treated to a 26-foot high holiday bush ensconced in, you guessed it, 43 Sharp LCD panels -- 52-inch behemoths at the base and 19-inch models way at the tip-top. Oohs, ahs and festive lighting aside, the display is meant to raise donations for the HOPE program's "Green Collar Project" that will help students find a green-collar job related to environmental work. Snicker all you want about the heat pumped out by those 52-inch LCDs, but it the tree as a whole beats its plasma counterpart...

Liane Weintraub: A Tasty Mom's Take On This Holiday Season — Something isn't adding up for me ... why does everyone I Iook at seem to be smiling? You would think that, given the craziness of the world these days -- the economy in a slump and all sorts of businesses scrambling for survival -- everyone around me would be depressed and dejected. And yet, quite the opposite is true. No, this is not because I surround myself only with people who are wildly well-off or magically recession-proof; rather, I seem to be blessed with a collection of amazingly positive friends! They're all struggling these days, but they're waging their battles...

Modest George Bush Claims He Was ‘Unprepared’ For WarEveryone loves George W. Bush so much, and even more so when he gets all cute and modest about his epic record of WIN. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Bush invited hungry street urchin Charles Gibson into his secret Appalachian masturbatorium, Camp David, for a series of interviews with himself and his first lady, Laura. There is a 7-page transcript. Page 3 is where the cool kids are hanging out. Before George W. Bush was elected, we learn, he had assumed that if there were going to be any potential terrorist attacks or wars anywhere during his term in office, someone...

"I Was Unprepared For War"So says a candid President Bush, in an interview set to air today with Charlie Gibson of ABC News. GIBSON: What were you most unprepared for? BUSH: Well, I think I was unprepared for war. In other words, I didn't campaign and say, "Please vote for me, I'll be able to handle an attack." In other words, I didn't anticipate war. Presidents -- one of the things about the modern presidency is that the unexpected will happen. GIBSON: You said you were not going to be in the business of nation-building. And so much of what you had to do...

How Municipalities Should Integrate Social Media Into Disaster PlanningThis last Thanksgiving was marred by the horrible deaths of over 170 victims at Mumbai’s terrorist attack. If you weren’t watching, social media played a part in helping –and hurting– the event. First hand accounts were published on twitter, including pictures of terrorists in action, in fact Forbes called this Mumbai: Twitter’s Moment. Cities, authorities, states, and governments should have a social media plan in place to prepare for disasters of all sorts. [Social tools allow both true and false information to be rapidly communicated from sources in real time from anyone using a mobile device. During disasters this both...

Uber Tuber: The Instant French Fries Bazooka System [Dyi] — For some reason, Ted Goessling and Zach Gens think that creating a French fries machine using a potato gun—a compressed-air bazooka that fires potatoes—, a wire screen, and a large pot with hot oil is a good idea. I don't agree. I think their instant French fries maker—or Uber Tube, as they call it—kicks some serious Mr. Potato ass. Now I challenge them to make them curly. [Makezine]...

It’s one thing when a couple dozen or so tech blogs rally around the idea that Twitter is an excellent source for the quick dissemination of news in the time of crisis — many of us have been trumpeting this fact for months if not longer — but its another when CNN (and not one of CNN’s blogs, CNN proper) says the same thing. One of the top headlines today on CNN.com is titled “Tweeting the terror: How social media reacted to Mumbai.” The opening sentence of the piece is even more to the point, “It was the day social...

Facebook’s new revenue stream: $873 million from spammer Facebook has won $873 million in a case against a spammer under the CAN-SPAM Act. Facebook charged that Adam Guerbuez, Atlantis Blue Capital and 25 other people falsely obtained login information for Facebook users and then sent spam to their friends. Guerbuez send out more than 4 million messages that included promotions for marijuana. The judgment included injunctions preventing Guerbuez and his friends from accessing any Facebook data in the future. The finding is said to be a record high judgment under the CAN-SPAM Act. Facebook said though that the judgment may be difficult to collect, so investors may...

Verizon fires employees for accessing Barack Obama’s cell phone records If you are at work and you see the private mobile phone records of President-elect Barack Obama, no matter how enticing, you must resist the urge to take a quick peek. Several Verizon Wireless employees succumbed to that temptation and have found themselves in a heap of trouble. According to a press release on Thursday, a number of employees were caught browsing through Obama’s cell phone records. The mobile account was for a flip phone, rumored to be a Razr, that had been inactive for several months. The records that were breached included call times, phone numbers of incoming/outgoing...

Knitting Factory Fires Nearly All Employees — As previously mentioned, the Knitting Factory will soon be moving from its current Leonard Street location to the old Luna Lounge in Williamsburg. The change will take place early next year, and the venue will have its last Manhattan night on New Year’s Eve. The NY Press is now reporting that "the whole staff—65 people in all—is losing their jobs." Well, not all of them; "two of the 65 staff members—both managers—are being kept on. According to the bartender, the staff was told in April that they were being laid off en masse when Jared Hoffman, who took over in...

"Nesson argues that the Digital Theft Deterrence and Copyright Damages Improvement Act of 1999 is unconstitutional because it effectively lets a private group — the Recording Industry Association of America, or RIAA — carry out civil enforcement of a criminal law. He also says the music industry group abused the legal process by brandishing the prospects of lengthy and costly lawsuits in an effort to intimidate people into settling cases out of court." - paula simoes
