Photo Credit: (above) Iron Man (below) Jeremy Keith of Adactio Did you know that the movie Iron Man used a Creative Commons-licensed photo from Flickr? Here’s the story of how Jeremy Keith’s photo of his buddy Andy Budd in NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building in Cape Canaveral ended up in the movie: “Wait a minute”, I said. “What is this for?” “It’s for a movie that’s currently in production called Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jnr.” Holy crap! One of my photos was going to be in Iron Man? That certainly put a new spin on things. “So I guess you...
guest post by Aaron Muszalski On his blog, UK-based web developer and hobbyist photographer Jeremy Keith recounts how a vacation photograph he took inside NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building came to be used in the 2008 blockbuster Iron Man. Three minutes into the movie, there was my photo. It fills the screen. The camera lingers over it while performing its best Ken Burns effect. Not only was Robert Downey Jnr. photoshopped onto the picture, Jeff Bridges was on there too! The Dude!! …On my picture!!! My Flickr pictures have been used in some pretty strange places but this must surely be...

From Serious Eats Photographs from Phil Dokas and _nickd on Flickr "During almost 60 years of American distribution, we found only 1 out of 49 men will drink Jeppson’s Malört.... It is not possible to forget our two-fisted liquor ... the first shot is hard to swallow!" This is how Jeppson’s own marketing team describes its product. A growing Flickr photo pool documents people's facial expressions on first trying a sip of the Chicago-made wormwood brew. John Hodgman, however, doesn't seem to have too much of a problem guzzling the stuff (after the jump). [via Coudal Partners] Photograph from fullofkrap...
We’ve recently started using the WordPress plugin Yet Another Related Posts Plugin (YARPP) by mitcho to show possibly related posts on Laughing Squid blog. It works much better than most of the other related posts plugins we’ve used in the past. You can disallow by category and tag, limit by match threshold using matching scores and it can also add related posts to your RSS feed. Yesterday, after the news got out that Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang was stepping down from his job and that a search was on for a new CEO, BoomTown got inundated with reaction from everyone from readers of this blog to Internet players to Yahoo employees. In fact, my single favorite quote came from one Yahoo staffer, who noted that while the massive change that will come with the replacement of Yang–who co-founded the company in the mid-1990s–will involve even more turmoil than the beleaguered company has already gone through, Yahoo remains resilient. “You can kick this dog, but it still...

This is some crazy chicken wing flappin' action folks, and it looks like a lot of fun too! The system is powered by an Arduino and uses a hidden camera to analyze the players movement. There is a great flickr photo set of the build too! Existing consumer toy chickens were hacked, removing all circuits before a custom circuit was designed that gave us control of legs, wings and beak. Arduino microcontrollers were used along with radio frequency modules to give wireless control of the chickens. More about the Flap to freedom game powered by Arduino In the Maker...
Looking for the latitude and longitude of a particular address, to geotag a Flickr photo for instance? Tiny Geo-coder will give you results in an instant, and based on my tests is accurate even when the address isn't perfect (for instance, leaving "street" out of a street number or using a city's popular acronym). If you're looking to automate multiple calls through a script or create map mashups, Tiny Geo-coder has an even lighter-weight API. Simply append a search term to the API url like the example for Perris, CA on the site's homepage, and all the server will...
You may have seen this picture of the standard Photoshop desktop floating around the web the last couple of days in which the screen is recreated using real life objects. I myself saw it twice on Twitter, once on Digg, had it sent to me via instant messenger, and saw it posted on one of the Adobe employee blogs. It was so cool, that I decide to email Adobe to find out how it was made (was it real or drawn in Illustrator?), and if it was an official Adobe ad. In response, Adobe told me they weren’t actually involved,...
