Visual Explorer: New Browser Built on Top of Internet ExplorerToday we came across Visual Explorer, a new browser that wants to provide users with a better, more tightly integrated browsing experience. Similar to what Flock does with Firefox, Visual Explorer is built on top of Microsoft's Internet Explorer and provides users with a new user interface, as well as a number of new features. While Flock focuses on integrating lots of social media services, Visual Explorer tries to provide its users with a more extensive set of general browsing features such as live previews for tabs or an enhanced download manager. Sponsor Because of its dependence on Internet Explorer,...

Flock's New Add-on Proves OpenID In The Browser Can WorkSoftware maker Flock has released an OpenID management add-on for its social web browser. The add-on -- which works only on Flock 2.0 and not on Firefox 3, the browser upon which Flock is based -- was co-developed with MySpace and identity management company Vidoop. Even though MySpace helped create it, the add-on itself is site-agnostic. Once you install the add-on, you can use it to store your OpenID credentials securely within Flock. Then as you browse around to all of your favorite, OpenID-supporting social websites, Flock will alert you whenever you're able to use OpenID to log in to...

Flock OpenID support a small step for slow-moving standardThrough a partnership that includes MySpace and Vidoop, an alpha extension brings OpenID management to the Flock social browser. MySpace and provider of authentication and identity management solutions Vidoop have teamed up with Flock to develop an OpenID management addd-on for version 2.0 of the ’social’ browser. Here’s how works: the extension will enable Flock to collect and manage OpenID credentials and use them whenever you browse an OpenID-supported service. It will also automatically alert you if you can use a stored OpenID to log into a website. The add-on enables you to manage all of your OpenID profiles, choose what sites to associate certain accounts with and view the login history. The plugin, currently in alpha, can...

MySpace, Flock and Vidoop release OpenID for Flock pluginFiled under: Web services, Open Source, Social Software, BrowsersOpenID is a really great concept. The ability to use a single digital identity across the web and avoid having to sign up for yet another user account is a real productivity boon. More and more high profile sites and services are adopting OpenID, but the project still hasn't gained the traction that many of us think it deserves. This is partially because it still isn't easy to use OpenID -- or even find out if a site supports OpenID -- on all services. MySpace, Flock and Vidoop think they've come across...

Flock Partners With MySpace and Vidoop on OpenID Browser Just a month after the public launch of the Flock 2.0 browser, Flock has announced the addition of OpenID to the Flock 2.0 browser today. I've been saying for a long time that if OpenID wants to succeed, they have to get it into the browser so when you hit a site that offers OpenID login, it could be as close to seamless as possible. MySpace, Flock and Vidoop jointly developed OpenID for Flock which should help the Flock browser gain additional user adoption. OpenID for Flock is now available to all Flock 2.0 users as an alpha extension...

MySpace helps develop OpenID extension for FlockThere's a new OpenID extension for "social browser" Flock, and it was created with the help of password management service Vidoop and News Corp.-owned social network MySpace. It's now available for download for all Flock users who have upgraded to Flock 2.0. For MySpace, which initially announced its support for OpenID back in July, this is also a push for Data Availability, a universal-login project that the social network announced in May but has since only rolled out with a few partners. Yahoo, one of MySpace's launch partners for Data Availability, has also thrown its weight behind OpenID. "As three...

Elisabeth Mahoney's radio reviewWaking up early yesterday in a remote rural setting, Farming Today (Radio 4) was the obvious listening choice. Having done the naive townie thing all weekend of thinking how stress-free countryside living might be, the programme came as an emphatic reality check. Presenter Anna Hill discussed links between organophosphates in sheep dip and sheep farmers falling seriously ill. Many listeners had contacted the show with their own stories of illness after years of handling the products, which all sheep farmers had to use from the 1970s to 1990s. One woman detailed a terrible range of symptoms, which ultimately led her...

Chris Snyder is an online journalist specializing in new media. He writes about the tech biz for Wired.com’s Epicenter blog. It’s a long road to a victory in the browser wars. Just ask Firefox. The open source browser which launched in 2004 just cracked the 20 percent threshold of the market share for November, according to Net Applications, pushing it a step closer but still miles away from IE. Recently a few new players have also thrown their hats in the ring, including Google with its much-hyped Chrome and the lesser known, Mozilla-based social web browser Flock, which released its...

CNN Gears Up to Take On the APCNN's new wire service may not yet even be a David to the AP's Goliath, but its attempt to break into the market as a niche alternative has not gone unnoticed by the world's largest news agency. The service has been in a sort of beta with a handful of newspaper sites for about a month. Next week editors from 30 newspapers visit Atlanta for a major pitch from CNN executives. Among the enticements: household names such as Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blitzer — and a rate scheme that will undercut the competition. Tom Curley, AP president and CEO, tells...

10,000 iPhone Apps - How Many Are Good? The App Store for Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch devices that launched in July today has over 10,000 applications. Any way you look at it, the App Store has been a resounding success for Apple. The company was doing a million dollars per day in sales over the first thirty days — about a third of which it kept — and some analysts have predicted that the App Store will be a billion dollar business for Apple by next year. Indeed, Google, RIM, and Microsoft have each emulated Apple’s distribution method with their own application download stores for mobile and...

Most bloggers today are familiar only with services designed for use with their choice of web browser. If you edit a WordPress.com account or WordPress.org installation, chances are you login and publish your material through the cloudware provided. The same goes for Blogger and TypePad users, and as well as options like MySpace and Vox. But if you’ve grown tired of those standard frontends, and would prefer to utilize software to blog for work or for personal enjoyment, there are alternatives that you should know about. For Mac users in particular, there are several that prove as useful, powerful, and...

The Top 10 Black Friday Sites — Get your running shoes ready, because it's Black Friday time! Millions of shoppers flock to various retail stores the day after Thanksgiving in anticipation of deeply discounted electronics, toys, and other items. More than 147 million shoppers hit the stores on Black Friday weekend last year, spending an average of $347.44, according to the National Retail Federation. It's no surprise, though, that the 2008 holiday season will be a challenging one. Consumers may be spending less than previous years, given the current economic crisis. Retailers are struggling, too, with news of Circuit City filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and Best...
