How-To: Make Your Own Cardboard iPhone DockI was a little irritated when Apple didn't include a dock for the iPhone 3G. That, the $30 price tag, and general laziness are the reasons I still haven't bought one. I've been able to improvise when I need one, but these DIY instructions on how to make your own cardboard iPhone dock have made my day. Get your cardstock or thin cardboard, download the provided (free) PDF, and watch the video to make your own too. The other perk besides the whole free thing? The design possibilities are endless — I'm already perusing the pretty cardstock at Paper Source!...

The Economist tours the cloudThe new issue of The Economist features a good primer on cloud computing, written by Ludwig Siegele, which looks at trends in data centers, software, networked devices, and IT economics and speculates about the broader implications for businesses and nations. A free pdf of the entire report is also available. Siegele notes that the hype surrounding the term "cloud computing" may have peaked already - Google searches for the phrase have fallen since July -......

Metaplace closes new funding -- personal virtual worlds I'm pretty chuffed to learn that Metaplace, a games startup that I'm an advisor to -- closed a new round of financing today, netting $6.7 million from their existing VCs and Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz. Metaplace was started by Raph Koster, who created Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies, with the idea of democratizing the creation of virtual worlds and games inside them. Instead of gigantic, elaborate virtual worlds, like Warcraft and its competitors, Metaplace allows users to create modest, personal virtual worlds the way you'd put together a MySpace page, using a toolkit that unpacks into a...

Convert & Extract Audio from Videos (Click to Enlarge) There have been a few times where I’ve wanted to extract audio from video files, but it’s not always easy to find a free tool that can successfully do that. I highly recommend grabbing the free Pazera app if you ever find yourself in a similar situation. To make it even more useful the program also doubles as an audio conversion utility. What are some things you can do with this? One great example is taking an FLV video (such as one from YouTube), and turning it into a standard MP3 music track. Think of all...

Nokia Comes with Music - a 'private' music flat rate and music as the social glue Nokia has announced that it is launching their Comes with Music (CmW) offering in the UK, Engadget reports. With 2.1 Million tracks from 3 of the 4 companies 'formerly known as major record labels', DRM'ed but without expiration date. Regardless of the obvious bummers (where are the indie labels, and why DRM?) I find this offer to be a very interesting step-up-the-ladder towards the Music Flat Rate that I have been describing for the past 5 years (lately, in my new book, Music 2.0... download the free PDF now!). In a way, just like Google is doing in China,...

Apple Bans Murderdrome Comic Book from iTunes Yesterday's post on iPhone comicbooks drew some great points in the comments. But it was an email sent to me by artist Paul Jason Holden that made me realize why comics won't succeed on the iPhone, and why the App Store's "quality control" is just a euphemism for "censorship". Holden and writer Al Ewing (both 2000AD alumni) put together a comic book designed from the start to work on the iPhone's small screen, complete with "making-of" videos. They submitted it to the App Store (as a free download) and Apple refused to take it. Why? Holden: Unfortunately, Apple have...
