Microsoft: We Promise Not To Kill McAfee, Symantec (MSFT)When Microsoft (MSFT) announced it was abandoning its unsucessful $50 "Windows Live OneCare" in favor of a new, free security suite named "Morro," we wondered how companies like McAfee (MFE) or Symantec (SYMC) would be able to compete against a free product. But Microsoft is promising it's not trying to wipe out the security software firms. Morro, by design, won't offer nearly as much protection as McAfee's or Symantec's services. Reuters: Microsoft Corp's upcoming security software is not designed to take sales from Symantec Corp and McAfee Inc as it is a stripped-down, free product that focuses purely on anti-virus...

Microsoft to Offer Free Antivirus SoftwareBecause hackers target Microsoft's Windows operating systems more than any other OSes, one could argue that it would be only fitting for the software maker to offer its users a free security suite, and that's exactly what Microsoft intends to do. Noting the rapid increase in the prominence of malware, Microsoft says it will discontinue retails sales of it's fee-based Live OneCare subscription service by June 30, 2009 and replace it with a free security suite currently code-named "Morrow." "Customers around the world have told us that they need comprehensive, ongoing protection from new and existing threats, and we take...

Microsoft Realizes No One Wants To Pay Microsoft To Fix Its Own Security Flaws — Back in 2005, when Microsoft was first mulling the idea of offering security software, we noted that the company was between something of a rock and a hard place. If it decided to charge for the software, people would accuse the company of trying to get people to pay to protect themselves from the security vulnerabilities in Microsoft's own software. Yet, if they went free, then they would face screams about antitrust violations for undercutting competitors in the security software market. We also suggested a third option: design better software that doesn't need security software. But, failing that, Microsoft chose...

Microsoft’s Glancing Blow at the Security IndustryThe two biggest security-software makers lost a big chunk of their market caps on Wednesday, November 19, 2008–and not just because of the bad day for tech stocks. Microsoft announced late Tuesday that it would offer free antivirus software starting in the second half of 2009. Microsoft didn’t land a solid punch, but tech-security companies felt it this morning Symantec (off 9%) and McAfee (off 7%) are out in full force spinning Microsoft’s move as an admission that it never belonged in the security business. (Rowan Trollope, senior vice president of Symantec’s consumer business, called it “a capitulation” in an...

Microsoft discontinuing OneCare, will deliver free security offering insteadFinally. This is exactly what I said Microsoft should be when it announced that it would actually charge consumers to fix the security problems with Windows. No more: To address the growing need for a PC security solution tailored to the demands of emerging markets, smaller PC form factors and rapid increases in the incidence of malware, Microsoft Corp. plans to offer a new consumer security offering focused on core anti-malware protection. Code-named “Morro,” this streamlined solution will be available in the second half of 2009 and will provide comprehensive protection from malware including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans.
