Missing Persons, Duran Duran. "But on Fridays at noon everything shut down for the day, and the residents took siestas behind closed shutters," which is the last line of the first paragraph, is Oz's semicredible set-up for the obviously allegorical atmosphere of the story that follows....

Here's how she defended the Friday night scheduling:"Dude, we're in the age of DVR," she told Sci Fi Wire. "People watch what they want to watch." True, except that the jury is still out on whether something other than a live viewing is worth much to advertisers and networks. Plus,...
Posted by chenryRecently I was working with a client and I decided to do a little experiment, because sometimes I have nothing better to do. I wanted to know whether changing the crawl rate in Google’s Webmaster Tools really made a difference. Part of me felt Google just put it there to make people feel that Google will come to their site more often, but part of me wanted to trust Google. I quickly wrote a script that would stored all the user agent info, page visited, and date visited in a database. I let it run for 200 days,...

The Fridays aren't going to get less Black any time soon, and only bottles of red and bottles of white can lighten them up...right? The NY Post reports that, like Two-Buck Chuck Shaw before them, some magical drunken fairies called The Wine Group have saturated New York City with $3.99 bottles of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay. And you better believe that Manhattanites are hittin' that juice hard; "At Gotham Wines on 94th Street and Broadway, the cabernet sauvignon has become the store's best-selling California wine." Ah, cheap wine, the cause of and the solution to all of life's problems...

Fridays are our geek shirt days at work. I’m wearing this new one that @dragonal gave me for my early Birthday Present. What a great way to bring my childhood and geekiness together. :) Thank you Albert!...

I was pretty much bowled over by last week's first episode of Batman: The Brave and The Bold, with its pop-art combination of fun, action and villains with cosmic-powered gongs for weapons, but this pic from Friday's second episode promises that even better is to come. Yes, that's Batman turned into an ape, ready for action beside Plastic Man. And if you need more evidence of the show's greatness, look below for a second picture of awesome. Because Bat-Ape wasn't good enough, the episode also features Batman versus a T-Rex. Seriously, what else do you people need from your television?...

Here's hoping that none of you have an active weekend social life. Fox has announced its mid-season schedule, and Friday night has just become the one night that you'll want to stay in - or, at least, set your TiVo for. The last night of the work week will be home to the troubled Dollhouse, as well as seeing Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles moving in as its neighbor. The day may bring back bad Firefly memories for Whedon fans - but does another show's move mean more success for Fringe? Starting in January, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles will...
Filed under: Industry, Displays, Plasma Generally speaking, a rise in flat-panel shipments is good news. But in these curious times, we're wondering if the customers are screaming for the suppliers to slam on the brakes before slapping another shipping label on an HDTV. DisplaySearch's latest look at plasma shipments shows a 37% rise year-over-year and an 18% increase quarter-over-quarter -- question is, who's buying? We've already learned that bulging inventories are leading to near-across the board price drops, and this economy isn't exactly fostering new waves of television purchasers. Whatever the case, Panasonic is holding down the top spot in...
I imagine most of you won't blink an eye if I tell you that Serena Software just laid off 10 percent of its 900-employee workforce. Layoffs have become a predictable, opportunistic excuse for poorly managed companies to conduct house-cleaning, a reflexive overreaction to turbulent markets which may well end up lengthening the recession. Serena Software is a software company whose software other software companies use to make software — right, exactly, the kind of boring company people do their best to ignore. Last year, CEO Jeremy Burton forced employees to spend an hour every Friday using Facebook. As late as...

Filed under: Displays, DLPInitially teased at CES, Texas Instruments promises the future of DLP could include two people sitting on a couch wearing odd glasses, watching the same television but seeing two entirely different things while actively ignoring and disregarding the other's presence (at least one will have to wear headphones.) While passive aggressive Fridays at the Engadget lounge are always interesting, whether Dual View can catch on with the rest of the world or find a better use, like hiding Madden playcalls, remains to be seen, but should be soon since the company announced Thursday that it plans to...
