iPhone only: Normally, getting free Wi-Fi at one of AT&T's 20,000 or so hotspots requires opening a launch page in mobile Safari, entering your phone number, clicking the link in a text message, then repeating at every new hotspot or every 24 hours. Fun stuff, but free (until Friday, Dec. 5) iPhone app Easy Wi-Fi for AT&T can make it much simpler. Enter your AT&T number into the app's settings, then when you're in range of an AT&T hotspot (and the app will verify that you are), you simply hit the "Log In" button, and you're on your way. There...
So, this isn't happening as quickly as I had hoped, but the Windows Live Wave 3 rollout has officially begun, albeit not with the Big Bang I had expected. No, none of the fun stuff is up yet. But if you have a Windows Live ID (formerly called Passport) account, you can check out the first new Wave 3 service today: Windows Live Account. Here's what it looks like. There's more coming of course. Presumably soon. Update: It must be happening in real time. Windows Live People is up now too....
From Serious Eats Make magazine presents a reader-submitted video from Ted Goessling and Zachary Gens, who have created the Uber Tuber, a compressed-air-powered potato bazooka that they use to propel spuds at a grid of wires that slices them into fries. Behind the grid is a backstop that catches the potatoes and funnels them into a waiting fryer below. It's more Rube Goldbergian than it is practical, but it's fun stuff nonetheless. This Make video is just a taste of what you can expect from Make TV, a show premiering on public television in January 2009. [via Kirk Draut] Related...
A big part of staying productive is keeping track of time, how much and on what you spend it—so why not make glancing at the clock as fun as possible? The Pin Clock is a nifty digital clock that pushes out pins to display its numbers (like that pin toy thing you used to stick your face into as a kid). Ok fine, we're no gadget blog, and the whole "keeping track of time" spin is probably a reach—but we just couldn't resist this one. The Pin Clock will set you back $60 at Amazon. The Pin Clock [via...
Well, I surely hope not! Or, at least, not yet!! The truth is though that, earlier on today, I went to the candy store, errr, I mean, to the Apple Store (One of its official providers, actually!) here in Gran Canaria and look what I got for myself while spending a few minutes in there: Goodness! Someone has got to keep me away from visiting such places and get an exposure to such lovely sweets. It is a very dangerous thing, don’t you think? But doesn’t it look gorgeous? Now you will be able to understand why I got easily...
Flickr’d Online music store Beatport, which specializes in electronic and house and all that fun stuff, has quite the holiday contest going on right now. From now until December 23 buying a song there enters you to win two prize packs. The prize includes that handheld Pacemaker DJ device, a copy of Traktor Scratch Pro, red and white control vinyl, V-Moda Vibe headphones, $100 worth of Beatport tracks and a t-shirt. That’s all one prize pack; if you win you get two copies of all those items, you know, to give to a friend (or sell on eBay). To...
Here's something for the less culinarily-inclined this Thanksgiving: a beautiful, glistening perfect papercraft turkey for you to print and fold. Fun Stuff: Papercraft Turkey Dinner (via Make)...
Harry McCracken, who certainly knows a thing or two about this topic, has a list of the Twelve Greatest Defunct Tech Magazines Ever. I do miss the sass of MacUser, I do remember the fun stuff in Computer Gaming. I would also add BBS Magazine to the list -- I loved them because they never talked down to their readers... Open question: where's the similar list for online sites and blogs that might not have gone out of biz, but are no longer recognizable? For example, I'd say Wonkette was never the same once Ana Marie Cox left. Others? email...
Today is World Toilet Day! The World Toilet Organization invites you to become informed and get involved to promote global water issues and sanitation. 2.5 billion people do not have access to proper toilets. The international charity WaterAid has ways you can help, and some fun stuff like potty games and printable posters. Link -Thanks, Actor 212!...
Zune Insider reports that Microsoft has updated the Zune firmware to 3.1, adding three new free games (Checkers, Sudoku, and Space Battle) and improving the Zune Social feature with better looks and a "like minded listeners" feature that shows you how your taste compares to your friends. Aside from the fun stuff, the update also promises improved stability and performance. To update, just launch the Zune software and go to Settings -> Check for Updates. Zune lovers, let's hear how you like it in the comments....
It’s been a long, hard year at Boing Boing TV (the Xeni Jardin-hosted online video show version of the blog Boing Boing) as the show creators figured out how to translate a blog into video. Jardin tells Liz that her most proud moments have been interviewing Buzz Aldrin, David Byrne and John Hodgman — and the fact that Boing Boing TV has been “in the black” or profitable since day one. The worst advice Jardin got on how to shape the show was that Boing Boing TV should pander to the success of other viral video hits, like sexy or...
The aptly named ThatsMyFace will take two photos of you head - one frontal and one profile, and a couple of hours late will have a full 3D model of your head. They’ll show you all kinds of fun stuff, like what you’ll look like at 60 or if you were a different race. They’ll also give you an “attractiveness rating” (I see Facebook App potential here). But by far the coolest part of the service is the sculpture area. They’ll create up to a life size head sculpture for you with a 3D printer, for the exceptionally reasonable price...
I'll be joining a number of other internet video creators and network folks at NewTeeVee Live, tomorrow in San Francisco. My session is 4pm, and we'll be talking about Boing Boing tv's first year, and some of the fun stuff we have planned. Tickets are still available if you'd like to attend, and the lineup is great -- lots of solid internetelevision. NewTeeVee kindly included Boing Boing tv in their NewTeeVee Top 10 Breakout Video Stars of 2008....
I'm one of the few who thinks there's nothing wrong with giving a gift card (especially because I love to get gift cards). If you have some reservations about them being boring gifts, then you may reconsider — Target is introducing gift cards that double as mini digital cameras, while Best Buy will have gift cards that are also speakers! With such fun stuff built into the gift cards, you may not want to redeem them. These could also cease to take the wind out of people's sales that were expecting more than just a gift card. What do you...
The folks who introduced GoPlanit to the world are launching a Sim City-like set of iPhone applications, one free and one for pay ($2.99) by the name of Pet Earth [iTunes URL] and Pet Earth Lite [iTunes] to quench the activist, treehugging, superheroic self nascent in the global gamer conscience. Perhaps Sim City isn’t grandiose enough an analogy. It’s more like “Sim World,” if there was such a thing. And instead of micro-managing one town center or another, your job as mobile steward of the Earth is to counteract disasters wherever they may occur. And oh is it a thoroughly...
Filed under: News, Programming, Reality-FreeEvery single media outlet, whether it's the major networks, the cable news networks, print, radio, online, and carrier pigeon, will be covering the election tonight. And that includes us!Starting at 7pm ET, TV Squad will be doing election posts. We'll be covering all of the networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX News, MSNBC and Comedy Central. We'll have several posts during the night and several posts after we find out who the next President is. This could be around 9:30pm or it could be around 11:15pm. It could even be 4am, though I'm not sure...
I guess it is obvious, but I thought it was worth pointing out - breaking the rules is fun - beating the man is a rush. Think Napster. This morning I was reading through the thousands of comments (can you believe their are thousands?) generated by ShopSavvy (our Android application for the G1). Amazingly, hundreds of users feel like they are doing something wrong when they scan barcodes in retail stores. Some hide behind displays as they scan, others turn down the scanner beep volume to avoid detection, while there are the ones who get a kick out of doing...
