uvLayer, a startup that has built an intuitive webtop for sharing YouTube videos and other media, has launched the latest version of its site which introduces a host of new features, including support for more IM networks and Flickr search. uvLayer has slipped under our radar until now, but their product is impressive, allowing users to search for and organize media much as they would on their computer’s desktop. These ‘desktops in the cloud’ (called canvases by the service) can be made public, allowing users to browse through the media you’ve collected in an organized manner. These canvases are...
Since the initial launch of the Facebook platform, Slide and RockYou! have battled for top developer status. While RockYou! has continued to acquire applications as a means of expansion, Slide has focused on core properties and introduced a new application to the platform in late October. Using data from our sister site AppData, we’ve compiled traffic data for the top four applications from both companies to get a sense of their overall recent performance. To learn more, check out the 8 apps below. Slide’s top four applications: 1. Top Friends -504,596 MAU, down 2.97% in the past 30 days After...
Of course it is quite difficult to like a website on its launch date when all you get is a lengthy and awkward name but I think Save The Planet And Win definitely deserves a very close look from everyone because of the great idea intended to help everyone do what we can to fight global warming. The idea behind the website is absolutely simple and straightforward: the website promotes environmental awareness while the companies sponsoring the site pay for regular members to reduce their carbon footprint. The website members are offered incentives - points that they exchange for real...
The Gadget: iHome's iP47 speakerphone has an unbelievable amount of integrated functions, like A2DP stereo Bluetooth connectivity, iPhone/iPod docking, GSM interference shielding, iPod alarm clock playback, AM/FM radio and on-board dialing direct from the unit. And, it has a remote control. It's one of the only iPhone speakerphone units out there now. The Price: $199 The Verdict: Good, but not fantastic—and a bit pricey. For all the functions it has, each one has a small flaw that prevents the whole from being spectacular. The main point of the iP47 is the speakerphone functionality, which connects to your iPhone via Bluetooth...
Yahoo’s online photo sharing site Flickr today rolled out the new mobile version of its site. Phones such as Nokia’s N Series, the Samsung L870, phones with Opera Mobile browsers, Android-based phones and yes, the iPhone (and iPod touch) can now access the new version of the site at m.flickr.com. The new site, which iPhone users have been able to see in beta form since October, looks great. It reminds me a lot of the original Facebook site that was built for the iPhone after it originally launched in 2007. It has nice, easy-to-click tabs along the top that take...
Bloggers are often looking to improve the look of their blog for one reason or another, and designers are rarely content to leave things the way they are for too long. Blog themes typically get changed and re-designed pretty quickly (especially in comparison to other types of websites), but you don’t always have to go through a full re-design to freshen things up. Here is a look at 11 things you can do to improve a blog theme without going the re-design route. 1. Improve the Look of the Sidebar Although the sidebar will never be the focal point of...
As some of you know, last year I worked on the platform behind the What's New page on Windows Live Spaces which provides the similar functionality to the News Feed on Facebook. That was just our first run at the feature and almost immediately after our release there was some great feedback from various corners. The most complete feedback I found online came from Jamie Thomson who wrote about the Spaces home page and gave the following suggestions There's a lot of potential for this activity list given that it could capture any activity people commit using their Live...
Different board games make the transition from table top to computer/handheld with varying levels of success. Chess, partially because of its structured nature and partially because it is a classic geek game, handles the transition extremely well. The sheer number of chess programs that are available for Windows Mobile devices is staggering. Rampart Chess ($12.95 from the WMExperts Store) is one entry into the field that is built by Rampart Games. When I’m looking for a computerized Chess game, there are some standard features that I’m looking for as well as some others that would be nice to have....
Oh Gmail, quit playing games with my heart. A new post on the Gmail blog said Google is announcing “Gmail on your Desktop,” but it’s not what you think — at least, it wasn’t what I thought. It sounded like Google might finally release the long-rumored support Google Gears support for Gmail, eliminating the last major barrier to Gmail adoption by allowing users to access their emails offline. (Though that functionality is already supported through email programs like Thunderbird). Alas, it turns out that the desktop in question is Google Desktop, the downloadable application that lets search and add Google...
Research In Motion’s (RIM) downside guidance for the third quarter is playing hell with the company’s share price today. After market close Tuesday, RIM said revenues for the three months ended November will fall short of its earlier forecast. The BlackBerry maker expects to report Q3 sales of $2.75-2.85 billion, up 65 percent from a year earlier, but less than its earlier outlook of $2.95-3.10 billion. “Initial sales of new products have been very positive, and we believe we have the strongest smartphone portfolio in the industry by far,” RIM co-chief executive Jim Balsillie said in a statement. “However, product-launch...
MySpace has partnered with RipCode to give mobile users access to MySpace videos. The content will be available at MySpace’s mobile site, m.myspace.com, which currently generates around 3 billion monthly page views from 10 million users. Video will work on the iPhone, T-Mobile G1, BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Storm devices, among others. All user uploaded videos (meaning videos that a user has uploaded, as opposed to all videos uploaded by all users) and most premium content will be available. The new feature will use RipCode’s on demand video transcoding service. Videos are transcoded only when requested, into whatever combination of...
Apple’s App Store has finally given developers the ability to release up to 50 promotional codes for their applications, allowing them distribute their apps to press and friends free of charge directly through the App Store. While the feature may seem like a minor addition to most people, it will be a boon for developers looking to help spread the word about their new applications. Before now, developers looking to share their application with the press or friends would need to include them as part of Apple’s Ad Hoc program, which lets developers test their applications before they are deployed...
