Back to the usual review this week, after our 20 Essential Apps list last Friday. Thankfully, it's been a pretty good week in the store, with lots of actually useful apps—including a full-fledged four-track recorder and a couple of utilities that actually add some usable core features that I wish would have made it into the 2.2 software update today. Oh, and of course, something Japanese and crazy. Onward! Four Track: Remember how Keith Richards always said he recorded the riff to Satisfaction on a hotel answering machine? Well, now, budding Keefs can multi-track their sudden inspirations for songs about...

Fiction meets reality in Google Street View. On May 3rd 2008, artists Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley invited the Google Inc. Street View team and residents of Pittsburgh’s Northside to collaborate on a series of tableaux along Sampsonia Way. Neighbors, and other participants from around the city, staged scenes ranging from a parade and a marathon, to a garage band practice, a seventeenth century sword fight, a heroic rescue and much more… Street View technicians captured 360-degree photographs of the street with the scenes in action and integrated the images into the Street View mapping platform. This first-ever artistic intervention...
Google recently hinted at a new Easter Egg part of Google Maps Street View. And it has surfaced now – it’s called Street With a View. From the project description: <<On May 3rd 2008, artists Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley invited the Google Inc. The Mac|Life weblog demonstrates how to hook up your Rock Band drum set to your Mac for a low-latency electronic drum kit. If you do a lot of music-making on your Mac with GarageBand, one of the two setups covered in the post should take your composition chops to new heights. On the other hand, if you're a Windows user, you may remember our previous post on turning your Rock Band drums into a real synth kit with a free Windows app (which, incidentally, looks like it's come a long way since we covered it last). Rock Out in GarageBand...

CELEBRITY BUZZ: Joaquin Phoenix just announced that he’s “not doing films anymore.” Apparently, he wants to focus more on his music. Filed under: Audio, Gaming, iLifeHere's a fun tip from Mac | Life that describes how to use the Rock Band drum controller with GarageBand. In fact, they describe two set-ups; one cheap and one less so. The cheap setup requires GarageBand, the Rock Band USB drum kit and either the GamePad Companion, JunXion (trial) or the Xbox 360 Controller Driver if you've got the Xbox kit.The pricier rig requires a paid version of JunXion ($95). After some simple configuration, you'll have a fully functional electronic drum kit with virtually no lag. Very cool indeed. If you set this up, let us know...
Filed under: Audio, Software, iPhoneRogue Amoeba has released version 1.6 of the nifty lossless audio editor Fission with a handy new feature: built-in iPhone ringtone saving. Fission has always been a great application for making relatively simple edits to audio files: cropping, trimming, cutting and pasting, etc. Now it makes turning MP3, AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or WAV files into iPhone ringtones a one-step process. Once you save a file as a ringtone it will automatically be passed to iTunes for syncing to your iPhone.Of course you can do it the old-fashioned way with GarageBand, but if your audio file...
Filed under: Accessories, Internet ToolsWhile most VoIP devices are made for Skype, IPEVO has made a version of its TR-10 conference phone with the Mac in mind: It can be used with both iChat and GarageBand. For iChat conversations, the device can be used either as a speakerphone or traditional handset with full-duplex audio and echo cancellation. The buttons on the front of the device can be programmed to start iChat or record calls. For GarageBand, the TR-10 can be used as an audio input device to record podcasts. The device only works with a Mac. IPEVO sells the TR-10...
Filed under: Peripherals Seems like there's a VoIP device for every temperament -- you can go supa classy, or you can try to be as bland as possible, but most of them are intended for Skype. Not IPEVO's TR-10, though; it's designed for iChat, and it does VoIP with support for four-way conferencing as both a speakerphone and a handset. If geeky rebel radio is your thing, it records podcasts in tandem with GarageBand, too -- all IPEVO asks is that you fork over $79.90 before you start living the iLife with Bruce Willis.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments...
