Make Use Of Podcast #47: uTorrent for Mac, GMail, GReader, FlickrA mixed bag in the podcast today. There’s a new look to the Make Use Of website and there are enhancements to GMail, Greader and Flickr and finally(!) there’s a version of uTorrent for the Mac. It’s about time. The podcast is available through iTunes so don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast if you have an iPod, or in another podcatcher if you have a different MP3 player. "That’s a funny question isn’t it? It is something of a parlour game question. Yet it’s a marvelous way to analyze the features of different communication modes, and to think about what we really need from our communications." - Kol Tregaskes
email - still the most versatile, and durable - Joelle Nebbe
Yep, agree. though I use Twitter a lot nowadays. - Kol Tregaskes
I personally am not a big fan of email. I have very few contacts via email, most of mine are on Facebook or other sites. I generally only send out an email if I'm sending out my resume. - Mathew Ballard
One addition. Depending on what IM client you're using, it can be searchable. - Rochelle
Rochelle - you're right. A commenter on the blog pointed out that Google Talk enables you to save chats. - Hutch Carpenter
Google Talk isn't the only one that saves chats. I use Digsby which saves them for all email clients - Lindsey Smith
Email first (no character limit), FriendFeed, IM. - AJ Kohn
Don't most save chats? - Kol Tregaskes
i would choose ff. - webosapien (Burcu Tüzün)
Friendfeed - Igor Poltavskiy
I don't think social networks are purely private. Take Last.fm for example. This comparison should also consider the ability to share/transfer files. - Mitch
oh gawd. I'd say IM but it really depends on my mood. - Tamar Weinberg
If I could pick only one: email. I can send texts to husband via email, so dual purpose. - Alix

Backing Up An Entire Flickr Account [Windows]While it’s true the Desktop Flickr Organizer for Linux can’t be beat as far as backing up your Flickr account is concerned, I was searching for a way to do the same in Windows and yes, I found a way. The app is called Downloadr. It is very basic but it does the job it’s supposed to do and furthermore doesn’t crash like flickredit does. The way to back up your entire Flickr account (meaning all photos including private ones) is to do this: In your preferred web browser, login to your Flickr account first. Launch Downloadr. Click Extras then...

Web Browsers Put To The TestWhen it comes to browsers, you have many options (listing a few): Firefox, IE, Safari, Opera and now Chrome. While the browser you prefer is simply that, personal perference, it is interesting to read reviews of how well they perform when compared to each other. ExtremeTech recently ran an article which tests these browsers called ‘Which Web Browser is King?‘. While the article is an interesting read, if you want to cut to the results here they are (note, the point system is explained in the article): Based on our arbitrary score assignments, Google Chrome is the speed king: Google...

Have your baby at the Hello Kitty Hau-Sheng HospitalSection: Gaming News Let me begin by stating this isn’t some sort of strange joke. Everything you are about to read is absolutely true, and if you go to Yuanlin, Taiwan, you can see it yourself. Ready? Okay. There is a Hello Kitty hospital. No, seriously. Tsai Tsung-chi spent more than $3 million to open Hau-Sheng Hospital in 2006 and the entire place is Hello Kitty themed. The place has even received authorization from Sanrio, Hello Kitty’s parent company. It’s fairly small with only 30 beds and it is a maternity hospital designed specifically for welcoming babies into the world....

HDYT - High Def You Tube?I read the headlines too, and yawned just like you did.  But I took it one step further…I clicked. High Def Tubes Dude, it looks good! It really does.  Not sure if you can see it here - but this looks good, at regular scale and also at Full Screen. Yes - it looks good when you click the window in the window. This was all spurred when I read blogmaverick’s post called “Youtube’s Desperation” Where does that leave Youtube ? Actually in a far better place. Two websites. One of which becomes a video search engine , with out...

Alien Coffee Press and Other Gifts for GeeksPsst! Wondering what you should get for your geek for Chistmas? Take a look at this article that our very own Jill Harness wrote for Inventor Spot. This one to the left is the Inka, the alien coffee press, by designer Guido Venturini (if that isn’t an alien’s name, I don’t know what is) for Italian design studio Alessi. Link...

Moonlight Pictures says no to Chrome! If you were using Chrome and you were to access the official webpage for Moonlight Pictures you would get a message “Chrome not Supported”. Why? Well, we at Moonlight Pictures believe in having as much privacy as you can while browsing the internet and its come to light about how Google has tried to make their new shiny browser give them nonexclusive right to displays and distribute ever bit of content transmitted through the browser. We are aware that since the controversy emerged, Google says that they will change the Terms of Service and the correction will be retro-active, however,...

Will OpenID Lose to Facebook Connect? Image via Wikipedia Great post at Social Media Times about Facebook Connect: It was an inevitable that a company would come along an release a standard for single sign on that had the financial backing to go build strong partnerships and more importantly, mainstream buzz. Yesterday Caroline McCarthy highlighted some of the challenges facing OpenID and I have to say the battle between Facebook and the open standards community is about to get pretty fierce. I really think it might - not because Facebook is “better” - but it is really hard to explain OpenID, ecpesically to non-technical people. ...

Review: Rampart Chess Different board games make the transition from table top to computer/handheld with varying levels of success. Chess, partially because of its structured nature and partially because it is a classic geek game, handles the transition extremely well. The sheer number of chess programs that are available for Windows Mobile devices is staggering. Rampart Chess ($12.95 from the WMExperts Store) is one entry into the field that is built by Rampart Games. When I’m looking for a computerized Chess game, there are some standard features that I’m looking for as well as some others that would be nice to have....

Gmail Comes As a Desktop GadgetFor some time now, we’ve been able to access our Gmail accounts freely over POP3 or IMAP, so we can play with our email all day long from our favorite email clients. Google apparently didn’t think that was enough and they decided to release a gadget for Google Desktop to allow you to manage your Gmail account. The gadget brings some of the web-based features to the desktop, such as keyboard shortcuts and ability to search your contacts. All in all, it is a cutsie little way to handle your Gmail account if you happen to use Google Desktop. Another...

The Story of 10,000 GeeksIt seems that the days are moving faster than I can keep track of lately. Just yesterday, we hit 10,000 members on Geeks. How is that even possible? I can’t get over the way the community has just exploded! Stay tuned for some announcements of big giveaways! In the meantime, let’s take a look at what has been happening on both Geeks, and over on Lockergnome. Lockergnome Posts Is free Internet just a dream? The Empire State Building was stolen! Freedom of Religion lends itself to freedom from Religion, as well. Mytheon is set to break MMORPG ground. Is Microsoft...

The $8000 Nikon You Can’t Afford Pictured: The very recently introduced Nikon D3X. Compared to other high-end DSLR cameras, this one is all photo and no video (something I personally agree with - pro photo cameras should just do photos). So how many megapixels do you get with this one? 24.5 to be exact. And it’s big, as in literally big - and it does the full frame FX format. Camera fans know what that means (and yes it’s important). And yes, this beast is 8000 US dollars. It is the flagship model, after all. For that kind of cash, it should not only take...

The Sounds Dying Hard Drives MakeHard drives can die at any time, but typically you get some kind of warning from sounds they make. Usually any sound that a hard drive makes, other than a spinning noise of course, is bad. Here is an interesting page from a data recovery company which gives various sounds from different brands of hard drives which are dying. Some (obvious) advice from their web site: These are some typical sounds we hear in our data recovery lab. If your hard drive makes noises like these and you are still able to access your files - backup immediately. One other...

HTC Touch 6900Image via Wikipedia So, after my HTC 6800 got in a “perdicament” with the lawn mower…I needed to search for a new phone.  I wanted to go back to basics and get an old school razor or something, then I found the Touch. Take Control Of Windows Startup ProcessesMost power users know about the ‘msconfig’ utility which ships with Windows and allows you to configure many of the system level parameters. One of the more well known functions it performs is the enabling and disabling of startup programs. For more advanced control of the startup programs and processes, take a look at a couple of freeware programs: Startup Control Panel - Identifies where startup programs originate and allows you optionally configure  (or delete the entry altogether) whether or not they startup when your computer does. StartupMonitor - A small program which runs in the background and notifies you...
