Lucy Mangan on last night's TVThe Jacksons Are Coming (Channel 4) is the story of the few weeks this summer that the family of Michael Jackson spent househunting in the West Country. One presumes that the obvious title of Five Go Mad in Devon had to be nixed for legal reasons. But as the film unfolds, the viewer is forced to consider the possibility that the Jacksons are entirely sane and it is the rest of the world that is mad. And sometimes not just mad, but venal, greedy and vile. But that is to get ahead of ourselves.First we meet their good friend and...

Jason Polan explains with a sharpieThe new Criterion Collection website features a cool introductory video in the upper-right corner. A pair of anonymous hands draw on white paper with a sharpie as a narrator introduces the site. Turns out the hands and voice belong to artist Jason Polan. A Google video search revealed he’s done more of these sharpie videos. He also sells a couple on his site, like How to Draw a Giraffe and How to Draw an Apatosaurus. Too bad those last two don’t have preview clips. Check out this video he did for the State Bar of Texas: Love this stuff....

Symantec Reports Spate of Attacks Via Recent Windows FlawSurprised Giraffe writes "Symantec is warning of a sharp jump in online attacks that appear to be targeting a recently patched bug in Microsoft's Windows operating system, an analysis that some other security companies disputed. Symantec raised its Threat Con security alert level from one to two because of the attacks, with two denoting 'increased alertness.' The attacks spotted by Symantec target a flaw in the Windows Server Service that Microsoft says could be exploited to create a self-copying worm attack."Read more of this story at Slashdot....

Oh Great...Less Rainforest, More Corn Photo via belgianchocolate Are they going to have to make a Madagascar 3 movie where a lion, zebra, giraffe and hippo work to rescue some crazy lepilemurs (and pygmy tarsiers) not from foosas, but from human destruction? South Korea’s Daewoo Logistics has signed a 99-year lease entitling them to half of all Madagascar’s arable land. And, they will pay nothing to farm corn and palm oil there. The goal is to boost Seo......

Kirk Snyder: Obama's Victory, Gen Y, and the New Rules for Communication — In his victory speech, President-elect Obama said that young people had rejected the "myth" of their generation's apathy. He was spot on. For several years so-called experts have mistakenly painted a caricature of Gen Y as coddled, lazy and lacking in independence. From nearly every corporate tower there is currently hand-wringing going on about what can be done to "correct" their aberrant ways in the workplace. Last week, Barrack Obama gave all managers a lesson in how to harness this new generation's unique strengths. According to the Associated Press, two-thirds of Gen Y supported Obama. Why? Because from a communication...

6 Steps For Raising A Charitable Child — Most kids love toys, video games, and Hannah Montana--and while they might know every Miley Cyrus song by heart, they wouldn't have a clue what the term "philanthropy" means, much less volunteer to give up their own possessions for the sake of others' welfare. While the culture of giving may be foreign to most children, it's easy to train your own little ones to be compassionate. Here are six shortcuts for raising a charitable child, from birth and beyond. Start small. Alyssa Harding and her husband, Derek, of Seattle, Wash., didn't delay donations. Shortly after their daughter Bryn was born,...

SNL's Alien Giraffes Will Send Us All To Hell [Giraffe Party Mix]Saturday Night Live has decided to teach us all a little bit about those majestic creatures called giraffes, with the help of the Staten Island Technical High School kids. Apparently giraffes are alien creatures who fly on the leathery wings of bats, drink gasoline, spit fire, will eat our brains and send us all to hell. Looks like SNL is finally getting its groove back — oh, and the sloth makes a screaming cameo. Now on with the GIRAFFES. [Thanks Shaun]...

"Gemina (July 16, 1986 – January 9, 2008) (pronounced Jeh-MEE-nah)[1] was a 12-foot-tall Baringo giraffe[2] who lived in the Santa Barbara Zoo in Santa Barbara, California.[2] She became notable for the peculiar deformity in her neck, which was bent by almost ninety degrees between her C3 and C4 vertebrae. The deformity was not present when she was born, in the San Diego Wild Animal Park, but first became noticeable when she was three years old.[2]" Despite her rare neck deformity, Gemina reached old age for a giraffe. She outlived the average giraffe by almost six years. - Cee Bee
