K-world's USB Lamborghini UB385-T tunes DVB-T really, really quicklyFiled under: Tuners Tired of those vanilla USB tuners, are you? Not really getting the performance you deserve when tuning into your HD locals? Then have a glance at K-world's USB Lamborghini UB385-T -- but look quick, else you might miss it. Terrible jokes aside, this wicked quick DVB-T tuner is unnecessarily flashy, but early reports suggest that it works remarkably well. Setup was lightning fast, reception was world-class and the design was really something special. And heck, with a price tag like this (S$140; around 93 greenbacks), you won't even have to pony up too much for the branding.K-world's...

White label social network site provider Ning has decided to ban porn focused social networks from January 1. Ning’s Gina Bianchini said in a post to the Ning blog that the porn sites had a number of issues, including low take up of premium options (so they aren’t paying their way), issues with DMCA notices and related issues with selling advertising. Bianchini also said that having legal porn was encouraging illegal porn on Ning as well. In some ways its always been a little strange that a funded serious Valley company headed by Marc Andreessen (Netscape and others) also...

BarFlood.com - The Drunken Twitter Of Meeting WebsitesWhat it doesThis young startup enables anybody to flood any bar with his or her friends at the same time, by prearranging it over the Web. In addition to that, users can invite strangers that seem to share their selfsame interests and hobbies, and meet in person easily. This social service is provided in a very simple manner: all you have to do is pick out the venue in question and set down the time and theme for your meet-up. Friends (and strangers too, if you wish) are then invited and you all can convene together, have a grand time...

Call for Mobile Marketing Taxonomy (and it’s sorely needed)Jonathan MacDonald has had enough. And so have I. The industry is continually comparing Apples and Pears when it comes to mobile marketing. Witness the following from Jonathan’s recent post on the matter: Page 12 of NMA (27.11.08) contains a piece by Charlotte McEleny who writes that “Some 65% of young consumers find mobile messaging from brands too intrusive, according to a report by lifestyle research company Tuned In.” The headline screams ‘Young people alienated by brands using mobile for marketing’ I think its time we nail down some taxonomy here. Jonathan continues: Just adding the words ‘without permission’ to...

Newzie RSS reader will monitor pages without RSS feedsFiled under: Utilities, Windows, Productivity, Freeware It's been a few years since we last checked in on RSS reader Newzie. And it turns out the developers weren't sitting on their behinds for the past three years. Because the latest version of this free RSS reader for Windows is even cooler. First up, Newzie has all the same basic features we loved, including color coded indicators that let you know at a glance how new an item is. But it also has one awesome new feature: the ability to monitor pages without RSS feeds. Just click the add button, select webpage,...

Group minimized windows in Witch — The latest version of Witch, the indispensable window-switching utility, contains a new feature that highlights minimized windows with a border color of your choosing. When you activate Witch, you'll then be able to easily see your minimized windows, as their icons will have a unique border color. (Disclaimer: I was one of at least one users who asked for this feature, as I would occasionally activate a minimized window, and wanted some way to easily see them at a glance.) As shipped, the minimized windows are shown in the normal window hierarchy. What I wanted, though, was a way to...

Apple Approves Smutty iPhone App By MistakeOver the weekend, an interesting app made its way into the iPhone app store: Wallpaper Universe, a naughty little number that let you decorate your homescreen with pictures of women in various states of undress. On Friday, we saw FunMobility's appear in the app store but by Saturday, the app had been removed. This begs the question: what exactly is going on with Apple's app approval process? Sponsor Let's be honest here. Even if you only took one quick glance at the screenshot provided by the application's maker, it would be obvious what this app was all about: Porn...and Apple...

A fate that's sealedHouse sparrows have certainly become a rare sight in most of our cities. Twenty-five years ago they were so common that one would pass them on the street without a glance, or jeer at their song as just a tuneless string of chirps. Now the sound of a chirp in a city makes one prick one's ears up, and one tries hard to get a glimpse of the pert little cock bird with its cap and bib....

Exploring Google’s New Search-Based Keyword ToolIf you subscribe to Google’s Adword’s blog you probably saw this recent announcement.  Google has launched a new keyword research tool, simply called the Search-Based Keyword Tool.  At first, I thought this tool was just a revision or upgrade to the keyword tool already included in our Adwords accounts.  But this new tool does a few new things and their worth a mention. The main screen is pretty easy to understand and if you’re logged into you Adwords account, it will automatically pull all of the account profiles you’re managing into a convenient drop-down menu for the Website field.  Or...
