"Kumo" As the New Name for Live Search Looks Even More LikelyAdding fuel to the rumor we reported recently that Microsoft is ready to dump the name Live Search for its search engine and redub it "Kumo," ZDNet's Mary-Jo Foley reports today that Microsoft has:Redirected some search servers to the Kumo.com domainRegistered variations including Kumosearch.com, Kumopics.com, and othersAs Foley also points out, the bad news for Live Search just keeps on coming, with the latest being a glitch that fouled up promised huge cashback savings on Black Friday. So, what do you think? Is it time for Microsoft to turn Live Search out to pasture - or is more than a name change...

Cyber Monday crashes an online-shopping tradition [E-commerce]As white-collar workers return desultorily to their desk jobs, they waste time by shopping online. To capitalize on this, a group of online retailers invented "Cyber Monday," a day of Internet discounts to match Black Friday's in-store deals. You'd think that the planned traffic from such a staged event would go off smoothly. But you'd be wrong. Gap.com went down today, as did the websites of Victoria's Secret, Home Depot, and CompUSA. Williams-Sonoma, the kitchenware retailer, saw slowdowns on its ordering page. A tipster tells us he had problems with Borders and DiscoveryStore.com. A cottage industry of analysts — Gomez,...

Nice Price Or Crack Pipe: Factory Racer Porsche 914-6 For $325,000? [Nice Price Or Crack Pipe]We had the Herbie The Love Bug replica score a 44% on the Crack-Pipe-O-Meter™ last Friday, but that was due to 21% of the vote going to "other", thanks to a poll glitch. Today we're going with a car that most likely earns an approval rating of about 99.9999% from our readers: a factory-built Porsche 914-6 race car that spent its working life as a test vehicle in Stuttgart and never got beat up on the race track… until a few years ago, when it hit the vintage-race circuit. The car's seller adheres firmly to hallowed eBay tradition and goes...

Linux: Fedora 10 Now AvailableWe typically recommend that those new to Linux get their feet wet with Ubuntu, but if you think you're ready to explore alternative distros, the Fedora developer community has announced the official release of Fedora 10. The release was originally planned to go live a few weeks ago but suffered a delay as Fedora developers verified its source code had not been compromised following a hacker attack back in August.Like Ubuntu's recently released Intrepid Ibex (8.10), Fedora 10 is built on the Linux 2.6.27 kernel. The new kernel, which was released last month, offers better webcam support and the new...

Fedora 10 Arrives with Better Audio, GNOME Updates and a new IM ClientThe Fedora Project has announced the release of Fedora 10, the next generation of Fedora Linux. Fedora 10 brings many of the same improvements we saw in the latest version of Ubuntu — a better network manager and updated versions of GNOME and GIMP among others — but also packs in some unique new features. The big news for Fedora fans in version 10 is the new “glitch-free” version of PulseAudio, which improves sound in Fedora 10, and, as the name implies, gets rid of the annoying latency and dropped audio problems that plagued early release of PulseAudio. Fedora 10...

RIM clears up BlackBerry Storm OS situationWell, it looks it looks like we can put the first Storm conspiracy theory to rest, as RIM has now come out and said that the supposed delay-causing Storm OS glitch was, in fact, more of a sticker glitch, and that there was never such a thing as an OS version 4.7.0.82. As you may recall, the rumors started flying when some Storms started showing up with a sticker indicating the OS version as 4.7.0.82, while the device itself showed that the OS was version 4.7.0.65. That prompted some to speculate that the OS had to be downgraded at the...

How To Save Advertising (Now That TV Is Toast)The New York Times pulls together a panel on how to save advertising now that TV networks and other traditional "gatekeepers" no longer control the world. The NYT's Jack Hitt moderates Robert Rasmussen (RG/A), Lars Bastholm (AKQA), and Benjamin Palmer (The Barbarian Group). Full debate here. Some highlights below. On the transformation to a "conversation": Bastholm: In [the old] days...there was usually more of a brand monologue. Your brand would just spout whatever values you were trying to instill in your consumers. If it worked, great. People would talk about it around the water cooler. Hitt: And that doesn't work...

BlackBerry Storm OS downgraded at the last minute?  Here come some numbers with decimals, so get ready. BGR is speculating that batches of the BlackBerry Storm that had been shipped with OS version 4.7.0.82 may have caused some sort of glitch. And when BGR asked Verizon about the official OS version, Verizon told them it was 4.7.0.65 – that’s lower than 4.7.0.82, mind you. Turns out, your BlackBerry Storm box might have more than one sticker on it. If you’ve got version 4.7.0.65 of the OS with a yellow dot sticker and you peel back the product label on the box, you might find another label underneath...
