U.S. Steel to lay off 3,500U.S. Steel is idling a taconite plant in Keewatin and two other facilities in Michigan and Missouri. The company says about 3,500 employees will be laid off in total. Palm, and Elevation, Seeking Higher GroundView the full PALM chart at Wikinvest Palm's market cap now stands at slightly over $200 million after the company's stock plunged 10 percent following an ominous earnings warning Monday after the stock market closed. So it's worth asking, does Palm's largest single shareholder, Elevation Partners, which acquired a 25 percent in the company for $325 million in 2007, really stand behind its recent expression of support for the company, or is the private equity firm, which takes its name from a song by one of its partners, U2's Bono, ready to pull the plug? That's the question tech watchers...
