It’s about time. The podcast is available through iTunes so don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast if you have an iPod, or in another podcatcher if you have a different MP3 player. It looks like yesterday when Opera was all set to release version 9.5 with a brand new skin, and today Opera Developer blog wrote about the upcoming Opera 10, which will use an all new and improved rendering engine. Opera 10 will be powered by Opera Presto 2.2, which is the newest rendering engine for the Opera browser. It provides significant improvements in speed, performance and security. Are you thinking, what I am thinking? Yes, the browser war never went down! It’s still on with Mozilla Firefox 3.1 and just-out-of beta, Google Chrome. Coming back to the topic, I just...
For you Hotmail users out there, Microsoft’s e-mail service will be getting a big bump in memory thanks to new integration with SkyDrive, its free online storage service. Bottom line: It now dishes out 25 gigabytes of space. This all comes through the recently released Wave 3, which makes big changes to the way we use Live apps. We have already seen new changes to their mail app, and now a little extra space makes for a nice topping. Some new features include: Hotmail's minimum storage space is 25GB. The ability to download e-mail attachments from Hotmail into SkyDrive. SkyDrive...
When I reminisce about the Best of 2008 I can't help but think Google. Their biggest addition to the geek world in 2008 is probably the Android platform (which now runs on the T-mobile G1 phone), but other features and updates like the Chrome Browser, Gmail themes and additions, iGoogle (and themes), Knol (Google’s Wikipedia), Mail Goggles for Gmail, Picasa 3.0 and Video Chat for Gmail all provided their own unique function and entertainment. What Is Your Favorite New Google Feature? Android/T-mobile G1 Chrome Browser Gmail Themes iGoogle Themes Knol (Google’s Wikipedia) Mail Goggles for Gmail Picasa 3.0 Video Chat...
When friends push friends onto Gmail, it usually involves talking up the seemingly limitless storage space, the fast-moving interface, or its inter-connectedness with other Google applications, like Calendar. Those features are all fine and good, but Gmail does a lot of helpful things that some users never get to dig into. From one short web address, you can video chat Skype-style with contacts, ensure you didn't leave yourself logged in elsewhere, help mom gradually migrate from her old dial-up-era email address, and pluck a single message out of tens of thousands. Let's dig in and take a look at...
Posted by Arielle Reinstein, Gmail Product Marketing ManagerNot too long ago, one of the Gmail engineers broke out her vinyl cutter and made some Gmail mvelope stickers. Pretty soon, they were pasted to our desks, stuck on our laptops, and adorning the walls around the office. Then other people started asking us about them -- first it was just other Googlers. But when a guy I was sitting next to on an airplane asked where he could get a Gmail sticker, we realized other people might like them too.So we designed some more, and printed up a whole bunch. There's the...
If you like to open .docx files without Office Word 2007, there’s a new Firefox extension from Microsoft that should help. Available for Windows as well as Linux machines. Oh Gmail, quit playing games with my heart. A new post on the Gmail blog said Google is announcing “Gmail on your Desktop,” but it’s not what you think — at least, it wasn’t what I thought. It sounded like Google might finally release the long-rumored support Google Gears support for Gmail, eliminating the last major barrier to Gmail adoption by allowing users to access their emails offline. (Though that functionality is already supported through email programs like Thunderbird). Alas, it turns out that the desktop in question is Google Desktop, the downloadable application that lets search and add Google...
URL-shortening service Bit.ly now offers a Gmail gadget that helps you make sure the long web site addresses you send out via email don't get wrapped and become unclickable. To install the Bit.ly gadget—which just adds a Bit.ly URL shortener module to Gmail's sidebar—you have to have "Gadgets by URL" enabled in Gmail's Labs section. Then, in the Gadgets tab in Settings, add this URL: http://hosting.gmodules.com/ig/gadgets/file/107368512201818821991/bitly-shortener.xml When Gmail refreshes you'll have the Bit.ly gadget on your sidebar, as shown. Our GigaOM mail is using GMail and normally everything works just fine. I can either interact with the mail using the standard web interface or with Apple Mail under IMAP. The iPhone can interact with the mail using IMAP too and everything is hunky-dory. When it works. The past two days everything works as advertised when I'm in my home office but as soon as I leave my cocoon of happy WiFi things start going bad. I can connect to an external hotspot via WiFi and everything works as expected except the IMAP portion of GMail. I can interact...
We recently had the opportunity to meet with two senior executives at Google. At the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, ReadWriteWeb editor Richard MacManus and I met with Dave Girouard, President of Google Enterprise. Then a few weeks later, I met with Vic Gundotra, VP of Engineering, via video conference. Both meetings provided some interesting background - but the one question that keeps returning and that was not so well answered is: why is Google not deploying Gears aggressively? Sponsor What Is Gears? As explained on Google's FAQ: "Gears is an open-source browser extension that lets developers create web...
Either my glasses need another cleaning or the lines keep blurring between cloud, desktop and browser. My latest bout with myopia comes from the new Gmail gadget supported on Google Desktop for Windows. All of the Gmail goodness is in there: message starring, keyboard shortcuts and contact auto-completion. There are plenty of Gmail gadgets for Microsoft Windows Vista, so this might be more appealing to Windows XP users. Do we have any Google Desktop for Windows users out there? After a brief stint with Google Desktop, I uninstalled it as I was on a "lean and mean" kick and...
