Ike Eze: Dr. Strangelove & Loving the Recession — It seems like the race to the White House was a few months ago, not just a few weeks. The ballots were counted - and we've immediately turned our attention back to the issues at hand: the economy, job losses, and of course, the bailouts. Yes, bailouts. Plural. Apparently, the auto industry had pangs of jealousy when the financial companies started getting some help, and now they want in on the action. The Big Three - GM, Ford, and Chrysler - are asking for $25 billion in cheap loans from the government. (Tesla, the barely-5-year-old electric car company, wants a...

75 Percent of All Spam Globally? On Our Backbones? Holy Cow!There is damning evidence that this activity has been going on there for way too long, and plenty of people in the security community have gone out of their way to raise awareness about this network, but nobody seems to care. – Paul Ferguson, a threat researcher with computer security firm Trend Micro According to security experts, Web hosting outfit McColo is responsible for enabling the broadcast of more than 75 percent of all spam globally. Its client list is a rogues gallery of bad-guy syndicates involved in everything from botnets to counterfeit pharmaceuticals and kiddie porn. LinkedIn announces applications. Why? Today's email brought this announcement of applications from LinkedIn: Today we're announcing many more ways to interact with your network on LinkedIn. Whether it's a new way to create projects and collaborate, share information, customize your profile, or gain key insights, the new LinkedIn Applications deliver.   You may have had the same thought I did. So what? I've been a member of LinkedIn since the service started.  And the fact is, I don't really interact with my network on LinkedIn. I can count on one hand the number of times I've contacted someone using the service. Other tools...

Brendan Canning, Broken Social SceneMembers of the sprawling Ontario art rock collective Broken Social Scene are on tour in support of founding member Brendan Canning's solo album Something For All of Us... It's the newest record in the "Broken Social Scene Presents" series, in which individual bandmates take charge to create their own set of songs, with varying degrees of collaboration from their fellow scenesters. (You'll recall that the first of these was Kevin Drew's Spirit If..., which established the trend for albums with ellipses.) Reviewing Something For All of Us..., Spin declares, "Brendan Canning makes the case that he might be the guy...

Simon Woods: The Palin Melt Down — Sarah Palin couldn't give a good answer to the Roe v. Wade question Katie Couric asked her?!? Mangled, and ill informed answers on Hammas, or the Bush Doctrine, or Pakistan, we've come to expect. But on Roe v. Wade? Sarah Palin was picked by McCain precisely in order to answer that question! She was picked so that she could sit in interviews with people like Katie Couric, and be asked about Roe v. Wade, and sigh, and say, "You know what, Katie, my youngest child, who has been the greatest blessing of our lives ... etc." She was picked because...

Taylor Marsh: Why did McCain pick this woman above all the rest? — by Taylor Marsh Sarah Palin isn't stupid. Her performance at the Republican convention was masterful. Evidently, after George W. Bush, Republicans think the American voter will buy anything. As for me, I simply find Palin's position on the veep ticket depressing. The title of this post is the question readers over at my blog are asking. It's a good one, but there isn't any good answer to it; nothing that makes me, at least, feel any better. The GOP played the central casting role, something like they did with Bush. Yep, depressing. The first woman involved since Geraldine Ferraro, going...

I’ve been thinking about this question a lot lately. What does it take to be a happy person? Obviously the answer is going to be different for each person, but what worries me is that, as far as I can tell, most people don’t even ask – and those that do don’t have a very good answer. Ask someone what would make them happy, and their answer is likely to be pretty vague. “A good career”,” they might say. Or, “Family.” “A strong relationship with my partner,” they might add after a moment’s reflection. There’s nothing wrong with these...

I've gotta say, I think "happy" is the wrong word. I could give or take happiness. What I want is JOY. And it takes surprisingly little to achieve joy. - Heather Mina

Michael, I have to say I do get a kick out of helping others and making them smile! - Kol Tregaskes
There are varying degrees of happiness and the only way to psychological equipoise is via imposition on your psyche with thoughts that engender happiness even in the midst of circumstances that might make you unhappy. We all decide for ourselves. - Mattb4rd
By the way. Her beauty mark makes me happy even though she's wearing too much eyeliner for my taste. See how that works? :) - Mattb4rd
Isn't it strange how we can be 'unhappy' with what our lives our right and there is always something bigger, better, missing from our lives that if we had it we would be happy. As we achieve these things we are still 'unhappy' and we look back at our lives and realise how happy we were back in the day. - chet
@Kol, I tend to see happiness as fairly superficial, and usually as something that happens to us. The sun is out and the trees are pretty, so I'm happy. Joy, however, begins within us, and is a way of orienting ourselves to the world. You can be unhappy, but still filled with joy, so that as Michael said, that joy rubs off on others. Perhaps one could say, happiness is a feeling, while joy is a way of life. Does that help? - Heather Mina
Heather, kind of. I guess I've very simple and see happy and joy as being the same thing, but it's what the individual makes of it that matters. - Kol Tregaskes

The Open Book Question, IIIA reader writes: I think you do have one problem with your "open book" argument and here it is: In 2008, in mid-September, we are not even allowed to ask questions about Palin's real and actual life as a mother-as-governor? That notion is as absurd as the Palin candidacy itself, in my judgment. I think it is fair for any politician to be asked almost any question, including how would they balance work and family life, etc. However, parenting questions, specifically, are never asked of a man in quite the same way: with an implied judgment that it must be...

Okay, so Sarah Palin agreed to an interview with Charlie Gibson at ABC News, but we all know (right?) that it's going to be softball questions that can be answered with glib one-liners. Not going to get answers to the questions real citizens (i.e. taxpayers, voters) have. But it turns out if you happen to run into Sarah Palin in a restaurant, she'll answer questions, and say things that her handlers almost certainly don't want her to say. AmericaBlog: "I don't think this question will be answered until after Senator Stevens' trial in September and perhaps never. After all, Ted...

Cenk Uygur: Why is No One Calling the Anthrax Suspect a Terrorist? — The FBI is saying Bruce Ivins sent the anthrax that wound up killing five and terrorizing the whole country. The deadly attack was aimed at some of our top politicians and media figures. If ever there was a terrorist attack, this was it. So, how come no one is calling Ivins a terrorist? Let's get real. You know what the answer is. It's because he is white. It's also because he is Christian and right-wing, but I'll get to that in a second. Now, if you don't believe that they're not calling him a terrorist because he's white, let me...

McCain didn't anticipate Ohio losing jobsJohn McCain never could have anticipated that a deal pushed through in 2003, with his support and the lobbying efforts of his current campaign advisor Rick Davis, might cost the people of Wilmington, Ohio, 8,000 jobs. In a private meeting Thursday, Wilmington residents will ask McCain for help in stopping DHL's proposal to quit using the airport as a hub, which could cost more than 8,000 jobs. DHL says that it wants to stay in the freight business but that it can stem financial losses if it can put its packages aboard the planes of a rival - United Parcel...

ToAnswer: Twitter Meets Yahoo AnswersOne of the ways people use Twitter is to ask a question to a large group of people at once: “Does anyone know a good recipe for Lobster Bisque?” “What are the best games for a four-year-old’s pirate birthday party?” “What is the best tech conference to attend this year?” Whether or not you get a good answer depends on how many people are following you and how smart they are. It’s not like Yahoo Answers where there are millions of people coming to look for and answer each other’s questions. But what if you could combine the two: ask...
