Google Image Search: Now with Text Ads. Ugh.Much has been made of Google’s willingness - and now need considering the economic downturn - to monetize Google Images search. Google has even suggested that it may mean an incremental $200 million. But they’ve been cautious to add AdWords to Image search - perhaps because it is a difficult balance between matching user intent and relevancy…. Until today - the first day I noticed prominent ads within image search. I don’t believe that this implementation is effective - and certainly not capable of generating $200m. The trouble is that it does a poor job of matching ads with what...

Mind42 gets new back-end platform, Google image searchStefan Schuster continues to make steady progress on development of his Mind42 web-based mind mapping application. A lot of his efforts during the last few months has been devoted to rebuilding the entire application with a new back-end tool called Dojo. But the latest build also includes some nice enhancements, which are actually visible to us mere mortals: You can now search for Google images from within your mind map, and add them to it (see image at right for an example) Mind42 now supports mouse-wheel zooming Links in topic notes are now clickable The map admin area now enables...

Google Image Search Bar Google Image search now includes a search box in the top frame when you click on a result. This means you can perform another search without hitting the back button (or closing a new window if you opened one). If you want to know what Google images looked like in 2006, check out the WMV video from the video museum. Google has released a major overhaul for Google Street View, delivering new functionality that makes the service easier and more friendly to use. The new Street View revolves around “Pegman” a Clippy like character that users can drag and drop anywhere to view Street View. Better still, users can hold Pegman over a location for a second to see a preview of what the Street View image looks like before deciding on the full shot. Street View also goes big screen with an inset map, allowing for better viewing of images, and quicker switching, per the screenshot above. Directions...

Amid Layoff Speculation, Google Ramps GMail AdvertisingGoogle has covered Techmeme, VentureBeat, WebGuild, and others today amidst speculation that Google layoffs are coming… and 10,000 workers are affected. Whether those rumors are wholly true (my clear hunch: no), I’ve noticed another clear economic impact: My GMail account is being littered with new, unwanted ads. Google needs more pageviews. As ad dollars fall, increased pageviews is one of the few ways to offset the downturn. We saw this with: - YouTube - Google Images …. and now GMail. It seems to me that this move was masked by Google’s new, well-received GMail Themes - which was launched just a...

Hollywood Film Promotes Google Search in the TrailerSony Pictures has put up an interesting promo for their upcoming film – 2012. Instead of promoting the movie’s official site in the trailer, they just show a message saying "Google Search: 2012". This is obviously a good idea because their audience need not have to remember any complex web addresses but the only problem is that the official site of movie 2012 doesn’t figure anywhere in the top 10 Google results. Anyway, this film is expected to hit movie theatres in July next year so the web team at Sony Pictures still has plenty to time to work on...

Google allows users to change search results Google has started rolling out “SearchWiki,” a new feature that allows users to change the order of search engine results. Available only to signed in Google users, the feature allows you to move the sites that appear in rankings up or down, take them out altogether, leave notes next to specific sites and suggest new sites that are not already in the results, or are buried too far down in the results to see. Changes are stored in a users Google Account, so are available from any computer. In a post to the Google Blog, Google was quick to...

I don’t think there is an adult alive today that doesn’t remember at least one iconic photograph that appeared on the cover of Time’s LIFE magazine. Those photographs from as early as the 1750’s to now have chronicled our world and our place on it. Well word comes from Mashable’s Adam Ostrow that Google has begun adding the roughly 10 million images from the LIFE library to Google’s Image archives. At this point they have managed to get 2 million images stored into the archives and to celebrate they have launched a special page for the growing collection. As well...

Millions of LIFE Magazine Photos Now Available on Google ImagesLIFE Magazine, which published classic photojournalism from Maragaret Bourke-White, Alfred Eisenstaedt, David Douglas Duncan and many others during its various incarnations as a weekly (1936-72), special issue (1972-78), monthly (1978-2000), and Sunday supplement (2004-2007), lives again, thanks to the new LIFE photo archive hosted by Google. Ultimately, about 10 million photos (only about 3 percent of them ever published) will be available at Google. There's no need to wait to explore this rich photo heritage, though: about three million are already online. So, what can you do with photos ranging from Marilyn Monroe to Winston Churchill, World War II to Vietnam, Muhammed...

Google to Host LIFE Magazine’s Photo Archive Google has announced that they’re now hosting LIFE magazine’s massive photo archive online. Google images will now contain one of the world’s biggest photo collections, with images and etchings from the 1750’s to present day. Around 10 million images will be available, and reportedly 97% of them have never been published before. Former TIME publisher Henry Luce’s collection is included as well which contains the entire works of Life photographers Alfred Eisenstaedt, Gjon Mili and Nina Leen, the Zapruder film of the Kennedy assassination; Dahlstrom glass plates of New York from the 1880’s; and Hugo Jaeger’s images of Nazi-era...

Google Images Adds Millions of Historic TIME Magazine PhotosOne thing that upsets me about Google Images is the fact that it's sometimes difficult to find older photos — hey, the Internet is only 39 years old. Google is trying to change this by hosting millions of photos from the LIFE photo archive from the 1750s and onward. Search various categories like people, places, events, sports, and culture or add "source:life" to any Google image search to only search the LIFE photo archive. I did this with Marilyn Monroe and these were the results I got — magical, right?!...

Google Makes Life Magazine Photo Archives SearchableLooking for a time suck? Google has put the entire catalog of Life magazine photographs online and (of course) made it fully searchable. More than a million historic Life images are hosted on a special section of the Google Images site, which you can browse by year, place, people, events and more. The vast majority of the images are pulled from Life’s extensive archives and have never been published, though naturally many of the iconic images from Life’s covers are also in the mix. Beware, you could lose hours, probably even days, in there. [Via Waxy] See Also: Flickr Taps...

LIFE Magazine Photo Archives Arrive in Google Image SearchGoogle has just added image archives from LIFE Magazine, the storied American photo journal, to its image search. Google Images has launched a special page for the collection, allowing you to browse photos by specific topic like Marilyn Monroe or Winter Olympics. You can also now append “source:life” to any Google Images search to see photos from the magazine. Most of the photos actually didn’t appear in LIFE, but rather, were gathered from “dusty archives in the form of negatives, slides, glass plates, etchings, and prints.” According to Google, there are roughly 10 million photos in total, about 2 million...

20 Amazing Color Images of the First World WarArmistice Day (11 November - dedicated by King George V) is the day in which the nations of the World War I allies remember the brave who died. Google Images Photo and Face Recognition Now Easier [In Brief]Google Image Search now makes the filters for faces, photos and news images available directly on the results page. Previously, one had to click through to the Advanced Image Search to refine your image searches. You'll find the drop-down menu to select between filters to the right of the existing menu to refine your search by image size. Which makes it even easier for fair use-enabled photochoppers to find places and faces for satirical digital compositing....

Take A Closer Look At Your Pictures With CoolirisBrowser plugin Cooliris (formerly known as PicLens) has been mentioned several times on MakeUseOf but never covered in detail. So for those who are hearing this name for the first time, Cooliris is a plugin which is compatible with Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer. It prides itself by enhancing your browsing experience when it comes to viewing photos on certain Cooliris-enabled sites (elaborated below) and when watching video clips on YouTube. Cooliris’ party piece which is really very impressive, is the endless 3D photo wall. Trust me, after using the 3D wall, regular browsing will never suffice again. Suppose you...
