Yesterday we took Ika Zaru to the vet (she was less than thrilled). We recently started going to All Pets Hospital in San Francisco and they’ve been really great. Out front they have a beautiful mural on the side of the building painted by the muralists at Precita Eyes Mural Arts. The mural was designed by Susan Kelk Cervantes and is based on actual pets that belong to staff members or have visited the hospital. photos by Scott Beale This is a blog post from Laughing Squid For more content like this, subscribe to the RSS feed, Twitter &...
[image by Tristan Savatier] The fun is nigh for pro photographers and spook-seeking high schoolers in the Presidio: the 70-year-old, seven-story abandoned hospital and graffiti treasure-trove is set to become a 154-unit apartment building. The project, headed up by Forest City Enterprises, begins Friday. [SF Examiner]...

Not-so-long past the days of New York City-style “train-bombing“, the practice of entire train cars getting completely spray-painted with tags and murals, anime & manga characters have been the favored choice of graffiti to the Japanese. Pink Tentacle compiled a very neat selection of train exteriors and interiors over the past several years. While the anime’d out trains are cool, the Japanese seem to be the most accepting to advertisers too. Ikea recently decked out a Kobe train in textiles like ALVINE BUKETT curtains and BLÅHÄGG blankets. Turning train-cars into more comfortable habitats seems to be a theme for the...
The irony of street art meeting my laptop isn't lost on me; I'm charmed, and yet a little perplexed, by this meeting. Dutch artist Parra brings his Parra Laptop Sleeve ($60) from InCase, and though the design is derived from graffiti, I think the actual motif is pretty pleasant. There are days when the design might be a little too loud, though, and I'd maybe like it on something smaller (the design is also available as a Slider Case for the iPhone 3G), but I'm not sure. What do you think? Parra InCase Laptop Sleeve: Love It or Leave It?...
Designer In The Spotlight (DITS) is a weekly feature that I run every Sunday (or more) to help particular individuals in the design community get their name ‘out there’ and to educate the community as a whole. It is a series of questions that asks the designer about themselves and their job as a designer. If you would like to be featured in an upcoming DITS post fill out the form here. 1. Please tell us more about yourself, your background, education and what you do as a designer. My name is Mike Smith and I am a self...
Kitting graffiti everywhere from a small knitted flower planted outside a casino in Monaco to this great and biggest one (picture below). There’s a new form of graffiti in town, and it’s extremely pleasant. So pleasant that I can’t imagine even the harshest critics of regular graffiti getting wound up. by Ariston Anderson Until Barnstormer Chris Mendoza teamed up with Ray-Ban to custom paint 100 pairs of Wayfarers in his inimitable style, nothing would've torn me away from my trusty black ones. Chris's personal history with the brand dates back to his childhood when he'd see them on his father, who played for the Nicaragua national football team. The senior Mendoza, a close friend of Pele, defined hip for the young artist with his Wayfarers. And nothing much has changed. The $250 version that Chris came up with pays tribute to 1980s graffiti, is available in red, black and white...
Call it lightpainting, light drawing, or light graffiti - whatever the label, the work of NYC duo MRI is fun, energetic, and chock full of awesome. Using a Canon 5D, a wide angle lens, 10-30 second exposures and lots of crazy lights, the team creates amazing images in which streaks and streams of light take center stage. WebUrbanist recently had the opportunity to talk to Michelle McSwain and Ryan Warnberg, the two halves of MRI, about their unique photography method. WU: How many tries does it usually take to get to the image you were hoping for? MRI: Quite...
Not that baseless speculation isn't cool or anything, but a couple scientists in the Netherlands actually set out to test the broken windows theory. Results: graffiti and vandalism can foster more bad behavior (surprise!). In this particular experiment, that meant just over double the rate of theft and littering in tagged or dirty environments, versus the same places cleaned up. Hmm! [Economist]...
Lionel is selling its first-ever subway train set, modeled after the New York MTA's R-27 subway cars that were in service up until the early 1990s. These are the same cars that were re-painted red in the '70s and '80s in an effort to discourage graffiti, earned them the nickname "Redbirds". (Other cars were painted the "Deep Gunn" red, too.) According to Wikipedia, the R27s were "'Protestant' married pairs, which means that they were coupled together as pairs." The Lionel replicas are Protestant pairs, as well. The "O" scale cars are finished in a kale green enamel, have real...
In what has to be a new contender for the most contemporary crime story, a young man was arrested for making graffiti and three other charges after another rider on the N train in Astoria snapped shots of him on her cellphone scratching a window on the train and sending them into Crime Stoppers via text. The vandalism task force was able to connect the cellphone pics to 18-year-old Andrew Morello, who had previously been arrested this summer for tagging "Shelly" on a commercial vehicle in Queens. The NYPD delegated a Crime Stoppers line over the summer specifically for text...
Graffiti doesn't have to be destructive or polluting, I'm seeing a new trend in eco-graffiti or "guerilla gardening" that's gaining traction. Here're a few examples: Edina Tokodi (aka Mosstika) interview on Wooster Collective Moss graffiti instructables by users splnlss and ladybird Manual for City Farming Plant Modules by N55 If you've got a favorite example of guerilla gardening, please post it in the comments!
