Precita Eyes Mural at All Pets Hospital in San Francisco Yesterday we took Ika Zaru to the vet (she was less than thrilled). We recently started going to All Pets Hospital in San Francisco and they’ve been really great. Out front they have a beautiful mural on the side of the building painted by the muralists at Precita Eyes Mural Arts. The mural was designed by Susan Kelk Cervantes and is based on actual pets that belong to staff members or have visited the hospital. photos by Scott Beale This is a blog post from Laughing Squid For more content like this, subscribe to the RSS feed, Twitter &...

Blip Festival 2008 coverage Vimeo user Tony gives us a taste of the action at this past weekend's Blip Festival with a performance by Sulumi. The NYTimes Jenna Wortham also ran an article profiling the event -The third-annual Blip Festival kicked off its four-day showcase Thursday night. Hosted by 8bitpeoples, a New York art and tech collective, and The Tank, a local nonprofit, the event features nearly 40 artists from China to Switzerland. [...] Although chiptune musicians prefer to play on older consoles -- the more obscure and archaic, the better -- and can only produce a handful of notes, the range of...

iPhone projector graffiti The Zeptotools blog posted this demo of an iPhone application they are hoping to release. I haven't used the application or seen it outside of this video, but I like the idea of adding whiteboard features to the iPhone by sending screen data to a nearby laptop with an attached projector. What would really be something is if someone extended this idea to allow multiple iPhones to draw collaboratively to a single projector screen. Blight's End: Presidio Hospital to Go Residential [image by Tristan Savatier] The fun is nigh for pro photographers and spook-seeking high schoolers in the Presidio: the 70-year-old, seven-story abandoned hospital and graffiti treasure-trove is set to become a 154-unit apartment building. The project, headed up by Forest City Enterprises, begins Friday. [SF Examiner]...

Too Pretty To StealMegan points to an article in the Economist affirming broken windows theory:The most dramatic result, though, was the one that showed a doubling in the number of people who were prepared to steal in a condition of disorder. In this case an envelope with a EUR5 ($6) note inside (and the note clearly visible through the address window) was left sticking out of a post box. In a condition of order, 13% of those passing took the envelope (instead of leaving it or pushing it into the box). But if the post box was covered in graffiti, 27% did. Even...

Train Makeover: Anime, Living Room and Homeless Shelter EditionNot-so-long past the days of New York City-style “train-bombing“, the practice of entire train cars getting completely spray-painted with tags and murals, anime & manga characters have been the favored choice of graffiti to the Japanese. Pink Tentacle compiled a very neat selection of train exteriors and interiors over the past several years. While the anime’d out trains are cool, the Japanese seem to be the most accepting to advertisers too. Ikea recently decked out a Kobe train in textiles like ALVINE BUKETT curtains and BLÅHÄGG blankets. Turning train-cars into more comfortable habitats seems to be a theme for the...

Parra InCase Laptop Sleeve: Love It or Leave It?The irony of street art meeting my laptop isn't lost on me; I'm charmed, and yet a little perplexed, by this meeting. Dutch artist Parra brings his Parra Laptop Sleeve ($60) from InCase, and though the design is derived from graffiti, I think the actual motif is pretty pleasant. There are days when the design might be a little too loud, though, and I'd maybe like it on something smaller (the design is also available as a Slider Case for the iPhone 3G), but I'm not sure. What do you think? Parra InCase Laptop Sleeve: Love It or Leave It?...

Black Friday sales up 3% on last year This factoid can evidently be taken one way or another. There was also some confusion, with deals disappearing when they hit the checkout. HP and Microsoft promised 40 percent refunds at HP's online store, but the Microsoft's Live Search cashback program didn't award the advertised discounts, when they worked at all. Chris Mendoza x Ray-Ban Wayfarersby Ariston Anderson Until Barnstormer Chris Mendoza teamed up with Ray-Ban to custom paint 100 pairs of Wayfarers in his inimitable style, nothing would've torn me away from my trusty black ones. Chris's personal history with the brand dates back to his childhood when he'd see them on his father, who played for the Nicaragua national football team. The senior Mendoza, a close friend of Pele, defined hip for the young artist with his Wayfarers. And nothing much has changed. The $250 version that Chris came up with pays tribute to 1980s graffiti, is available in red, black and white...

WU Exclusive Light Graffiti Interview with MRI Call it lightpainting, light drawing, or light graffiti - whatever the label, the work of NYC duo MRI is fun, energetic, and chock full of awesome.  Using a Canon 5D, a wide angle lens, 10-30 second exposures and lots of crazy lights, the team creates amazing images in which streaks and streams of light take center stage.  WebUrbanist recently had the opportunity to talk to Michelle McSwain and Ryan Warnberg, the two halves of MRI, about their unique photography method. WU: How many tries does it usually take to get to the image you were hoping for? MRI: Quite...

The Science of Broken Windows: Not that baseless speculation isn't cool...Not that baseless speculation isn't cool or anything, but a couple scientists in the Netherlands actually set out to test the broken windows theory. Results: graffiti and vandalism can foster more bad behavior (surprise!). In this particular experiment, that meant just over double the rate of theft and littering in tagged or dirty environments, versus the same places cleaned up. Hmm! [Economist]...

Lionel NYC MTA Subway train set with working lights, station announcements Lionel is selling its first-ever subway train set, modeled after the New York MTA's R-27 subway cars that were in service up until the early 1990s. These are the same cars that were re-painted red in the '70s and '80s in an effort to discourage graffiti, earned them the nickname "Redbirds". (Other cars were painted the "Deep Gunn" red, too.) According to Wikipedia, the R27s were "'Protestant' married pairs, which means that they were coupled together as pairs." The Lionel replicas are Protestant pairs, as well. The "O" scale cars are finished in a kale green enamel, have real...

Texted Cell Phone Pics Nab Scratchiti ArtistIn what has to be a new contender for the most contemporary crime story, a young man was arrested for making graffiti and three other charges after another rider on the N train in Astoria snapped shots of him on her cellphone scratching a window on the train and sending them into Crime Stoppers via text. The vandalism task force was able to connect the cellphone pics to 18-year-old Andrew Morello, who had previously been arrested this summer for tagging "Shelly" on a commercial vehicle in Queens. The NYPD delegated a Crime Stoppers line over the summer specifically for text...

Video of the Day: Today Looks at Subway Reefs — This morning the Today Show took a look at the subway cars that retire from the underground of New York, and (at the cost of the MTA) are sent to create artificial reefs off the coasts of other cities. (The program may soon benefit us as well, however.) Consider the below clip subway-reef-porn, with footage of the old cars being made suitable for the sea, and dumped off barges to meet their final watery resting place. They also note that Maryland is awaiting a delivery next week (so look out for something like this), and Lester Holt wonders if there...

10 Most Incredible Mazes and Labyrinths Mazes and labyrinths are more part and parcel of our culture than people realise. Their roots can be traced back to Greek mythology and Paganism, where they were regarded as mystical. It wasn’t until a few hundred years ago that mazes were designed for fun (sadists), and often became a perfect meeting place for secret lovers and cunning planners. Over time they have become associated with entrapment and enclosure as our imaginations run wild. We’ve found some of the world’s largest, craziest and highest mazes so you can loose yourself in the great tangled weave of the web for...
