A 26-year-old mother of two in Paterson died early Saturday morning after being struck by an SUV in a hit-and-run following a fight. Natalie Mestre had come outside her apartment around 2 a.m. to check on the altercation involving a group of women taking place out front. There she and five of the other women were hit by the Mercury Mountaineer being driven by Keema Green. Green has been arrested and charged with causing death by motor vehicle while driving with a suspended license. Those charges may be upped to manslaughter following an investigation. There's no word on what caused...
In 1980, science fiction writer and editor Ben Bova told a group of women writers, “Neither as writers nor as readers have you raised the level of science fiction a notch. Women have written a lot of books about dragons and unicorns, but damned few about future worlds in which adult problems are addressed.” It’s no wonder that female science fiction authors have disguised their gender in order to have their work taken seriously. We have a list of women who used male and androgynous pseudonyms to compete in the male-dominated field of speculative fiction. James Tiptree Jr. Given Name:...
Negative political campaigns and mudslinging aren’t anything new - in fact, the practice harks back to medieval time. In his excellent blog, God Medieval, Carl Pyrdum explains how politicians campaigned back then: Back in 2000, workers restoring the wall of a medieval public fountain in the town discovered a mural hidden under years of grime. At first blush, it was a pretty tame find. Just a big tree with a group of women in medieval garb clustered beneath it, presumably the sort of women who would have frequented the fountain in its heyday, right? Oh, how wrong you are,...
Before she was Captain Mal Reynolds' right-hand woman in Joss Whedon's Firefly, the amazing Gina Torres led a scrappy group of women freedom fighters in a world dominated by evil machines. She co-starred in the awesome Cleopatra 2525, a short-lived show from the Xena/Hercules production team of Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. Here she is taking down the 26th century's version of the Joker, a psychopath named Creegan, by turning his own robot attack drone against him. When will Gina Torres get the starring role she deserves? [IMDB]...
Blog Action Day is today. What better way to talk about poverty than to highlight what a cousin of mine is doing to fight poverty in Africa. Krochet Kids International is an NFP that was started by a group of college students in Washington and California. Their mission statement is simple and yet profound: to “empower people to rise above poverty“. From the Krochet Kids International Site: To create sustainable economic development programs that support holistic growth of individuals and communities within developing nations. To inspire the knowledge of a generation about their ability to bring change to a world...
I've long given up attempting to understand my female friends' obsessions with certain male celebrities, but in almost every case, I can at least devil's-advocately understand how someone can find the individual attractive, even if my rugged straight-male persona won't allow me to gushingly agree out loud (also I love football!!! WOOOOO!!!). If it were one or two of my friends' bizarro personal crushes, that'd be one thing, but just about every frickin' girl I've ever talked to -- from 'love every celebrity' crush-mongers to hipster pals who pathologically despise general sentiment -- seems to think he's the hottest dude...

From Serious Eats Marion Ettlinger David Foster Wallace, 46, was found dead in his Claremont, California, home Friday night after having hanged himself. Food-minded folk may already be familiar with his essay "Consider the Lobster," originally published in Gourmet magazine in 2004. If you're not, go read it here on gourmet.com. My gf here also reminds me that Wallace wrote an essay on the Illinois State Fair ("Ticket to the Fair") for Harper's magazine.* In that essay, a group of women at the fair think he's from Harper's Bazaar, not Harper's (there's a difference), and invite him to taste the...
