Patricia Handschiegel: The New Power Girls: Inside the Hot New Trend Among American Girls and Women — The group of women at Mani's on Fairfax look like any other girls in Los Angeles. Each is stylishly dressed as they chatter across the table at the outdoor café, a Hollywood industry hot spot known as much for its high profile customers as its signature breakfast. Only, instead of talking about the celeb they met the night before or the weekend's trip to the mountains, they're sharing top level contacts and insight to help the start-up companies each has founded. Once in a while, one of the four Blackberry on the table will buzz, prompting everybody to grab theirs....

Fight Leads to NJ Mother Dying in Hit-and-RunA 26-year-old mother of two in Paterson died early Saturday morning after being struck by an SUV in a hit-and-run following a fight. Natalie Mestre had come outside her apartment around 2 a.m. to check on the altercation involving a group of women taking place out front. There she and five of the other women were hit by the Mercury Mountaineer being driven by Keema Green. Green has been arrested and charged with causing death by motor vehicle while driving with a suspended license. Those charges may be upped to manslaughter following an investigation. There's no word on what caused...

Women Who Pretended to Be Men to Publish Scifi Books [Triviagasm]In 1980, science fiction writer and editor Ben Bova told a group of women writers, “Neither as writers nor as readers have you raised the level of science fiction a notch. Women have written a lot of books about dragons and unicorns, but damned few about future worlds in which adult problems are addressed.” It’s no wonder that female science fiction authors have disguised their gender in order to have their work taken seriously. We have a list of women who used male and androgynous pseudonyms to compete in the male-dominated field of speculative fiction. James Tiptree Jr. Given Name:...

Maria Burton: Mamas For Obama Make Grass Roots Commercial Sports — "This is the Most Important Election of Our Lives!!!" We've all heard that before (2000, 2004!), but this time it's different. Everywhere we look, friends and colleagues who have never been very involved in politics are involved, whether it's as one of the thousands of lawyers who have volunteered to help monitor the elections, or the untold millions who (in between donating money to everything from Michele Bachmann's opponent in Minnesota to truemajority.org) are spending a bit too much of their days forwarding emails and links or re-checking realclearpolitics.com to confirm that Obama is, indeed, still gaining on his lead...

Marcia G. Yerman: Victims of Sexual Abuse Get Heard — With the nomination of Sarah Palin to the Republican ticket, women who had scattered after Hillary Clinton's defeat in the Democratic primary were reenergized as they coalesced in their opposition to Palin's abortion viewpoint. Augmenting McCain's commitment to overturn Roe v. Wade, Palin ratcheted up the discourse with her position of no abortion exceptions in the case of rape or incest. "She can't keep the women's vote if they actually know what she is suggesting," was the popular wisdom. Yet, there were a lot of female voters who weren't clear about her record. That's when a core group of women,...

Negative Campaigning in Medieval Time Negative political campaigns and mudslinging aren’t anything new - in fact, the practice harks back to medieval time. In his excellent blog, God Medieval, Carl Pyrdum explains how politicians campaigned back then: Back in 2000, workers restoring the wall of a medieval public fountain in the town discovered a mural hidden under years of grime. At first blush, it was a pretty tame find. Just a big tree with a group of women in medieval garb clustered beneath it, presumably the sort of women who would have frequented the fountain in its heyday, right? Oh, how wrong you are,...

Beth Arnold: Is Elisabeth Hasselbeck Too Dumb to Be on The View? — Is Elisabeth Hasselbeck too dumb to be on The View? This is the question I've gotta ask myself -- and have many times -- and what do I come up with? I have to admit that I'd been out of the country and don't watch reality television anyway, so I'd missed the Survivor show on which Ms. Hasselbeck was a contestant. Thank God. It would not have made feel any better about her replacing dynamic Lisa Ling on this television show I used to love, to discover Ms. Hasselbeck became a celebrity because she ate worms. And as the American...

Gina Torres Versus The Joker, In The 26th Century [Found Footage]Before she was Captain Mal Reynolds' right-hand woman in Joss Whedon's Firefly, the amazing Gina Torres led a scrappy group of women freedom fighters in a world dominated by evil machines. She co-starred in the awesome Cleopatra 2525, a short-lived show from the Xena/Hercules production team of Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert. Here she is taking down the 26th century's version of the Joker, a psychopath named Creegan, by turning his own robot attack drone against him. When will Gina Torres get the starring role she deserves? [IMDB]...

CurrentTV's Vanguard: "America's Secret War" - Current's "Vanguard" Special Report There's been a lot of talk about whether the U.S. and Iran are going to war. The real question is whether the U.S. and Iran are already at war... a war through proxies. The Bush administration has long claimed that Tehran is supporting radical Shiite groups who are attacking American troops in Iraq. Recently, we traveled to the Iraq-Iran border for Current's "Vanguard" to investigate claims that the U.S. is supporting its own groups who are attacking Iran. Our journey took us from the streets of Erbil, the capital of the relatively peaceful and pro-American Kurdish north of Iraq,...

Judy Muller: McCain's Debate Air Quotes Badly "Misfired" — When it comes to dismissive finger gestures, there is nothing quite like the two-handed "air quote." For pure sarcastic appeal, it beats the much more obvious middle finger every time. But beware what words you put inside those little air quotes. John McCain used the gesture twice during his final debate with Barack Obama and each time it misfired. Actually, you can put "misfired" in air quotes. What I really mean is it blew up in his face. The first time came when the two were discussing energy and free trade. McCain said, "Well, you know, I admire so much...

Blog Action Day is today. What better way to talk about poverty than to highlight what a cousin of mine is doing to fight poverty in Africa. Krochet Kids International is an NFP that was started by a group of college students in Washington and California. Their mission statement is simple and yet profound: to “empower people to rise above poverty“. From the Krochet Kids International Site: To create sustainable economic development programs that support holistic growth of individuals and communities within developing nations. To inspire the knowledge of a generation about their ability to bring change to a world...

Am I The Only One In The Universe Who Thinks Benicio Del Toro Is Unattractive?I've long given up attempting to understand my female friends' obsessions with certain male celebrities, but in almost every case, I can at least devil's-advocately understand how someone can find the individual attractive, even if my rugged straight-male persona won't allow me to gushingly agree out loud (also I love football!!! WOOOOO!!!). If it were one or two of my friends' bizarro personal crushes, that'd be one thing, but just about every frickin' girl I've ever talked to -- from 'love every celebrity' crush-mongers to hipster pals who pathologically despise general sentiment -- seems to think he's the hottest dude...

Madeleine M. Kunin: Sarah Palin's Unnoticed Empowerment of Women — Governor Sarah Palin has been blown off the front pages by the financial crises, which has spread across six columns of almost every newspaper. Wall Street has overtaken Main Street. Her credentials slim to begin with, appear even more flimsy under the blinding light of a financial melt down. Still, the Palin factor has not disappeared. Polls continue to show that after the Republican convention white women have been swept to her side with the force of a tidal wave. Obama had a strong edge with women before Palin became McCain's running mate. Now women are virtually tied between McCain/Palin...

AKMuckraker: "Alaskan Women Reject Palin" Rally! — I attended the Welcome Home rally for Sarah Palin this morning. Hooo. It was an experience. About a thousand (maybe) hard-core Palin supporters showed up to hear her speak at the new Dena'ina Convention Center in downtown Anchorage. After shaking it off with a good double shot of espresso, and a brisk walk back to my car, it was time to head to the Alaska Women Reject Palin rally. It was to be held outside on the lawn in front of the Loussac Library in midtown Anchorage. Home made signs were encouraged, and the idea was to make a statement...

'Consider the Lobster' Author David Foster Wallace Found DeadFrom Serious Eats Marion Ettlinger David Foster Wallace, 46, was found dead in his Claremont, California, home Friday night after having hanged himself. Food-minded folk may already be familiar with his essay "Consider the Lobster," originally published in Gourmet magazine in 2004. If you're not, go read it here on gourmet.com. My gf here also reminds me that Wallace wrote an essay on the Illinois State Fair ("Ticket to the Fair") for Harper's magazine.* In that essay, a group of women at the fair think he's from Harper's Bazaar, not Harper's (there's a difference), and invite him to taste the...

Midday Open Thread Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gives Sarah Palin a thumbs down and doesn't mince words. Katha Pollitt from The Nation smacks down the sexism charges by McCain surrogates and has a few questions of her own for Sarah Palin. -MissLaura More and more women are speaking out against the McCain/Palin ticket because of her extreme views. On Wednesday, Sept 3, 2008, a group of women sent an email to 40 friends asking them to respond with the reasons they will not support any ticket with Sarah Palin. The response has been incredible as their website has received 100,000...
