Interior Dept. to allow guns in parksToday, the Department of Interior overturned a Reagan-era regulation, permitting loaded firearms at 388 of 391 national park sites. The decision allows guns in parks in “any states with concealed carry laws, not just those that allow guns in their state parks as originally proposed.” While the Department cited safety concerns as a factor, the National Park Conservation Association notes:......

Google Reader Gets a Major Makeover; It Rocks Google Reader has just launched a major redesign to its interface, addressing many of the top concerns of users of the popular RSS reader. In addition to simply looking way more clean and inviting, Google has introduced more collapsible navigation options, a new section for friends, additional feed bundles, and perhaps most welcoming to power users: the option to hide those intimidating unread items counts, which can quickly swell to hundreds or the dreaded “1,000+” when one spends more than a few hours away from the service. The “hide” options are handled on a per subscription basis, creating a...

Too Close for Guns, Google Switches to MisslesTonight I’ve been seeing a lot of buzz about Friend Connect, Google’s open initiative to take of Facebook Connect. The service lets you login using your Google, Orkut, or Plaxo account. Both MySpace and Facebook decided to opt-out of integrating into the service but bloggers are embracing it at a rapid pace. Last night Google sent out a large number of invitations to bloggers to install their service. The result is now a large number of blogs with Friend Connect directly integrated with their service. Surprisingly absent from all those sites? Facebook. Take a look at Twitter and you’ll see...

Briefly: Mumbai terrorists use guns, grenades and Garmin The terrorists who attacked Mumbai last week with automatic rifles and grenades also used a Garmin GPS device. Indian investigators seized the device and are using it to track the terrorists' route into Mumbai, according to The Hindu. The FBI is also studying data from the GPS, which was manufactured in the United States, the paper reported. The terrorists may have used digital maps from Google Earth as well. Garmin is considered the world's leader in navigational devices and had 24.9% of the global market share for GPS devices last year, more than any of its competitors....

I have the solution for Plaxico Burress and every other professional athlete who feels a sense of entitlement and necessity to pack heat while out and about because they feel unsafe, targets of opportunity, put upon, or just simply irritated by us non-recognizable types who are only packing a credit card and some bullshit lines to try on women when we hit the clubs.  If you are a professional athlete and  listen to my advice, you will never feel...

Another RNC CandidateRepublicans just don't get it. Katon Dawson, the chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party, the latest candidate to throw his hat into the ring to become the next head of the Republican National Committee, is disappointed that his party is out of power. He agrees that it needs new ideas and direction. His solution? Renew our commitment to our Party’s timeless principles...by reconfirming our commitment to be the party of smaller government, lower taxes, individual freedom, strong national security, respect for the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, the importance of family and the exceptionalism of America. Sounds familiar, doesn't...

Plax Will Turn Himself In TomorrowGiants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who appears to be in a heap of trouble after shooting himself with an unlicensed handgun at a nightclub yesterday, will apparently turn himself into authorities and plead not guilty to charges tomorrow. Word of this came from Burress's new layer, Benjamin Brafman, the same man who represented and helped acquit Diddy (several identities ago when he was Puff Daddy) after he was charged with having an unlicensed weapon at a club in 1999. Giants owner John Mara told reporters that the league and team officials met with players before the season to discuss the...

'Bang Bang!' Said the CookieFrom Serious Eats Grand Junction Free Press Straight from Colorado comes a cookie with a bang. The Grand Junction Free Press was first to hip us onto these 9-mm-shaped sugar cookie made by Mary Lincoln, owner of the Slice O' Life Bakery in Palisade. Though Lincoln informed me I was behind the times and she was doing turkey-shaped cookies when I called her earlier this week, she promised that next week the guns would be loaded with butter and sugar and ready to go for $2 a pop. Signs in Lincoln's store read, "No background checks" and “No waiting period."...

SoCal Toys 'R' Us Shooting Leaves Two Dead — PALM DESERT, Calif. — Two men pulled guns and shot each other to death in a crowded toy store Friday after the women with them erupted into a bloody brawl, witnesses said. Scared shoppers fled but no one else was hurt. The violence erupted on Black Friday, the traditional post-Thanksgiving start of the holiday shopping surge, but authorities indicated the shooting wasn't related to a shopping frenzy. Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez said the fight was not over a toy. He said handguns were found by the men's bodies, but he released little other information. He would not answer...

Michelle Renee: Mumbai Hostages: The Long Term Effects — Waking up to the news of hostages being held in Mumbai reminded me of our night of terror and got me thinking of all that has happened since, good and not so good, and what the long term effects are that so many are getting ready to grapple with in the aftermath of violent trauma. My daughter logged on to her Facebook account last night and saw a new kind of alert: 2 Kidnap Requests. To us, survivors of being kidnapped, tapped with bombs and held hostage for 14 hours, this wasn't just a Facebook alert, it was an actual...

Don't Mess With SwitzerlandA reader writes: The reason Switzerland has so many guns is every adult male below retirement is a reservist and, by law, has a fully automatic assault rifle (and none of your AK-47 dreck, these are SIGs, the creme de creme) plus some small but substantial supply of ammo.  46 out of a 100, yep about right for the pre-retirement male population.Another adds:At age 20, each Swiss man is required to officially join the armed service, beginning with a seventeen week boot camp-style initiation training.  After that, you are required to report in and participate in a three week training...
