Obama's Friends Form Strategy To Stay Close — Last Sunday night, President-elect Barack Obama's three closest friends -- Valerie Jarrett, Martin Nesbitt and Dr. Eric Whitaker -- sat down in the study of Mr. Nesbitt's house in Chicago for one of their increasingly frequent heart-to-hearts. They were puzzling over a new question: how the Obamas, who hope to remain close to their Chicago friends, will spend time with them while living in the isolation chamber of the White House. Over Diet Cokes, the three drafted the beginnings of an elaborate visiting schedule that will bring Hyde Park to Washington, so the nation's new first family can have a...

RED's "big change" announcement is out. The good news: no more waiting. Unfortunately, that's about it -- still no DSMC configuration for the general consumer. The rest of the news is targeted at professional film makers which, really should be expected if only these lustful hearts could be contained. With Jannard's team recently overcoming some sensor and electronics limitations, the specs and prices for the Scarlet and EPIC systems have been juggled resulting in a new, stretched delivery schedule. Judging by reactions in the RED USER forums, the changes are welcome if only vaguely understood for a system that...

Should Google Declare Blogpress As Their Unofficial iPhone App For Blogger? With the iBlogging wars still raging on in Steve Jobs back yard, a few iPhone apps are beginning to carve up the market based upon blog platforms. While Automattic and Six Apart have created WordPress and TypePad apps, respectively, Google may want to consider annointing BlogPress (an iPhone app created by CoolLittle Things) to represent them before the Blogger masses. Although there are other iPhone apps that can connect with BlogSpot blogs (such as LifeCast, BlogWriter and iBlogger), BlogPress’s latest update may make it the strongest contender for the hearts of Blogger fans everywhere. What’s New BlogPress has added...

Denmark's Kinder, Gentler System of Eugenics [Social Control] A new pre-natal screening program in Denmark has halved the number of babies with Down's Syndrome. The success of the program, undeniably a form of eugenics, raises a number of questions about how far people should go with pre-natal screening - and what kinds of conditions merit termination of a pregnancy. Many people, including the infamous bio-ethicist Peter Singer, would argue that there's a social benefit to knowing whether you're going to have a Down's Syndrome baby. The child will need lifelong care and supervision, which could be a drain on family (and the state). Presumably, having that information...

Republicans See Jindal As GOP's Obama — Last weekend, 18 days after Barack Obama decisively defeated their candidate for president, a mostly Republican crowd of self-described conservatives received their first introduction to someone many prominent members of the GOP think could be the party's own version of Obama. Like the president-elect, Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana is young (37), accomplished (a Rhodes scholar) and, as the son of Indian immigrants, someone familiar with breaking racial and cultural barriers. He came to Iowa to deliver a pair of speeches, and his mere presence ignited talk that the 2012 presidential campaign has begun here, if coyly. Already, a fierce...

Motorola cans RAZR 3 (Ruby), tells Android to, “Holla!” Motorola’s plans are thwarted once again by canning the highly anticipated RAZR 3, codenamed Ruby. After putting some effort into reviving and continuing the RAZR line with this new phone, it looks like they’ve changed their minds and are shifting focus elsewhere. Though the original RAZR was wildly successful, going from overpriced down to free in just a year and a half after its release, the RAZR 2 failed to see the same results. It’s hard to say whether the RAZR 3 would have seen a come back for Motorola, but anything that can be said now is pure...

Buy Nothing Day Commences Photo by John Quilty. While stores are hoping that Black Friday sales will bring charge-happy shoppers out in full force, Reverend Billy is hoping that people will hold on to their cash. The Rev & Co. were up bright n' early this morning to kick-off their annual Buy Nothing Day at Macy's. At 4:30 a.m. the troupe was "preaching and singing to citizens to accept the Stop Shopping Gospel into their hearts." They reported back saying, "This year's crowd was only about 2/3rds the size of last year, people are realizing the debt frenzy is a dead end and...

Survival Research Labs Still Burning After All These Years [Survival Research Labs] Industrial robot monster fight troupe Survival Research Labs (SRL) is 30 years old, which officially means that there are death machines out there old enough to have kids who are obsessed with Twilight. SRL, run by designer/artist Mark Pauline, has put on so many glorious, firey, illegal shows over the years that they've permanently earned a place in all of our hearts as the people who fuck shit up with machines made of jet scraps and meat. When you go to one of their live shows, you can stand mere feet away from giant, remote-controlled robots attacking each other...

How Dr. Seuss's Lawyers Ruined Christmas — Thanks to both Eric and Gunnar who simultaneously sent in the news of lawyers representing Dr. Seuss's estate who threatened the town of Louisville, Kentucky with a lawsuit if they didn't stop a planned "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"-themed celebration as a part of its Light Up Louisville holiday event. The lawyers pointed out that the characters are copyrighted, and could not be used. Legally, they may be correct, but as Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson pointed out: "It appears these lawyers' hearts are two sizes too small." Given the very subject matter, and the joy which Dr. Seuss stories bring...

2009 Pirelli Calendar: Elephants And A Whole Load Of NSFW [2009 Pirelli Calendar]It's that time of year again, when Pirelli sends aspiring Playboy photographers out on calendar assignment, letting them dream up ridiculous ways to photograph nude or nearly nude models in exotic locations. What this has to do with the business of selling tires we have no idea. Whatever, nekkid ladies! Hit the jump for a large and VERY NSFW gallery from the 2009 Pirelli Calendar. 'When did they make 2009 a year of 28 months?' you ask. They didn't, but Pirelli, bless their hearts, threw a lot of the images that didn't make the final cut onto their website. The...

Production Tesla Roadster gets glorious hands-on: stifle your envy, please Here at Engadget, we hold a special place in our hearts for Mr. Jason Calacanis, but regardless of whose name is on the pink slip, there's no denying that the vehicle you're peering at above just struck all sorts of jealousy in your chest. This Very Orange (seriously) Tesla Roadster is one of the very first to be produced with the revamped drivetrain, and according to the lucky (lucky!) souls over at AutoblogGreen who were able to give it a go, the "new, higher torque motor immediately made its presence felt." All that aside, we know you're here for...

Velocity 83 hits the FCC We've always had a soft spot in our hearts for Velocity Mobile. As far as black-slab phones go, they're certainly not as popular (or as well known) as anything from HTC, Samsung and the like. But there are some interesting details that have piqued our interest. And as Dieter pointed out, Dell has used them for its Pharos line. Enter the Velocity 83, which Engadget Mobile just spotted getting the what-for from the FCC. Dieter got a good look at the Velocity 83 back at CTIA (video and photo gallery). And what it lacks in screen resolution (240x320) and...

The Life of a Swedish 'Climate Smart' Chicken: Nasty, Brutish, Short? photo chaps1 at flickr The 'kycklingdebat' or chicken debate is hot in Swedes' minds since Svenska Dagbladet (SvD), on of the country's two main dailies, published a long report on the short lives of the 74 million chickens annually born and bred here. Swedes are eating more and more chicken meat and have been encouraged by both pundits and industry to do so, as chickens are supposedly more climate friendly than either pigs or beef cattle, notorious consumers of food and water. But SvD's report may chill some hearts, as the findings point to ......
