Hewlett-Packard nukes your hard drive to repair the letter 'P'Consumerist reader Marjan returned her Hewlett Packward laptop for an in-warranty repair. The problem? A broken letter 'P.' HP's solution? To fix the 'P'... then nuke the hard drive. In truth, this isn't uncommon: back when Joel and I wrote The Consumerist, we got these same kinds of stories all the time. Most laptop warranty programs seem to require a technician to return the laptop to the customer in factory condition... which means with your half-finished novel deleted and factory-default crapware re-installed to the system tray. For all my problems with Apple's Genius Bar warranty service, this is something they...

Best Open Source Alternatives To Enterprise AppsPeekAB00 writes "With 2009 IT budgets getting chopped down John Perez came up with this list of 25 best alternatives to enterprise applications (e.g DimDim over Webex, SugarCRM instead of Seibel, Zenoss over HP OpenView). John's list is somewhat eclectic. I am curious to hear what other enterprise (let's be frank...expensive) apps I can replace this year with open source ones. I am particularly interested in back-up and email archiving suggestions."Read more of this story at Slashdot....

RadioShack's $100 NetBook Costs $1,500 Over Two Years RadioShack is advertising a $100 netbook that, according to the fine print, will cost 15 times that amount over two years. That's because in order to purchase an 8.9-inch Acer Aspire One netbook for $100, you have to commit to a 2-year broadband plan with AT&T. The plan costs $60 a month, which comes out to paying $1,540 over two years. Engadget discovered the promotion in a RadioShack ad. Dell and HP are offering similar broadband deals with some of their netbooks as well for about the same rates. Kind of blurs the line between smartphones and netbooks, doesn't...
