First Looks: iSkin Vibes for iPod nano 4G + iPod touch 2GBased somewhat upon the company's earlier Vibes for iPhone 3G, iSkin's Vibes for iPod nano 4G ($25 each) and iPod touch 2G ($30 each) appear to use the same soft plastic we've seen in Jet Navy hydrocarbon cases, and feature uniquely iSkin molding and etching. The iPod nano version of Vibes is a single clear case with one of seven different patterns etched into the body, allowing the color of your iPod nano to shine through. By comparison, the iPod…...

Titan Balloon Mission Being Draftedeldavojohn writes "After Huygens & Cassini corrected our assumptions about Titan (a moon of Saturn), scientists are now debating on their next mission and one of the choices is the Titan and Saturn System Mission. What makes Titan a good choice? "Although the atmosphere of Titan is filled with a smoggy orange hydrocarbon haze, it is primarily composed of nitrogen — just like Earth's. In fact, Astrobiologists think Titan's atmosphere may be quite similar to how the Earth's was billions of years ago, before life on our planet generated oxygen." We also discussed its liquid hydrocarbons earlier this year."Read more...

First Looks: DLO SoftShell for iPod touch 2GClearly based upon the Jet Navy hydrocarbon cases we've previously reviewed for iPhone 3G, DLO's new SoftShell case for iPod touch 2G ($TBD) is a plastic/rubber skin that covers most of the iPod touch's body, save for its bottom ports and screen, using an included piece of screen film to make its protection nearly comprehensive. SoftShell is smoky gray, with a diamond rear texture and a DLO logo at bottom center; though a clear version would also…...

Fungus discovered that produces components of rocket and diesel fuelsGary A. Strobel, professor of plant pathology at Montana State University, has recently published his findings on a type of microscopic fungus living in trees, called Gliocladium roseum, which naturally gives off components of rocket fuel and diesel fuel. Strobel believes organisms like these which shed raw hydrocarbon components could be partially responsible for the vast underground oceans of crude oil we have today. In addition, he also sees them as a path toward new ways of producing bio-fuels. Could......

Further Innovations In LeMons Punishment: The Billy Gibbons! [24 Hours Of Lemons]As a 24 Hours Of LeMons judge, it's my duty to think up sadistic Solomonically wise penalties for racers who transgress The Rules. Regionally appropriate penalties are always good, and thus was born the Ozzy Osbourne Inertial Penalty Horn... but more was needed. With about 20 minutes to go before boarding the plane to Houston, it hit me: Billy Gibbons! Yes, the front man for that Little Ol' Band From Texas is one of the heavy-dutiest car freaks in the world, so that means a real LeMons Houston racer ought to sport a beard with similar length and volume. But...

Scientists Develop Plastic-Producing Bacteria Scientists at Genomatica Inc. recently announced that they have developed strains of bacteria that are able to produce plastic without the use of oil or natural gas. The sustainable process utilizes little more than sugar and water to produce butanediol (BDO), which can be manufactured into everything from plastics and fibers to pharmaceuticals. Genomatica estimates that within a year the energy-efficient process will cost less than current hydrocarbon-based processes - a revolutionary development since close to 3 billion pounds of BDO manufactured each year. (more…)...

Helly Hansen Odin PCM Soft Shell: Self-Regulating Temperature Control Jacket Regulating body heat is always a challenge during cold weather — it's always too hot or too cold, especially when running around town from crowded subway to overheated office. Helly Hansen's Odin PCM soft shell jacket solves the problem with technology that automatically adjusts according to your body heat. Fabric called Phase Change Material uses paraffin to store and release heat when needed most. Paraffin, a hydrocarbon, is most often used in sheet rock for residential buildings because it acts as an insulator. Usually found in wax form, paraffin melts as it absorbs heat, hardening again as it cools...

Fisker Raises $65 Million for Karma Plug-In Hybrid Sports Car Cash From Quatar for Fisker Fisker, the maker of the upcoming Karma plug-in hybrid sports sedan (all-electric range of 50 miles with gas engine kicking-in to charge batteries over that, similarly to the GM Volt), has announced it has closed a $65-million round of financing led by an affiliate of the Qatar Investment Authority, a state-owned, state-funded sovereign wealth fund. Apparently the QIA wants to "strengthen the country's economy by diversifying into new asset classes." In any case, this new hydrocarbon-money should help Fis......

Opentrace puts a number to a product's greennessEveryone wants to go green when they shop, but calculating the CO2 impact of everything that went into the manufacture, transportation and packaging of one box of cereal versus another in your head is not in the realm of possible. Enter Rinen, Inc., a Tokyo-based, garage-based, startup premiering at TechChrunch50 today with OpenTrace.org, a web app which calculates the environmental cost of a product and can boil that down to a single comprehensible number. Want to get a rough approximation of that box of cereal's environmental load all the way back to the processing of the oats in it? Scan...

Iraqi Cabinet Approves Gas Deal With Shell — BAGHDAD — Iraq's Cabinet approved an initial gas agreement Sunday between the Oil Ministry and Royal Dutch Shell PLC to invest in a joint venture to tap natural gas in southern Iraq, a government statement said. The agreement calls for establishing a joint venture between the state-run South Oil Co. and Shell to exploit the fields, the statement added without any other details. In June, Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani told parliament that Iraq was expected to finalize a deal this summer that would enable it to exploit flared associated gas for domestic use and exports. Shell had approached the Oil...

Mark Weisbrot: Bolivia: Can The Majority of People Vote for Change and Actually Get It? — Evo Morales changed the history of Bolivia when he was elected in December 2005 as the country's first indigenous president, and the first to get a majority of 54 percent. On Sunday he expanded his mandate considerably in a referendum, with 68 percent of voters opting to keep him in office. The conventional wisdom in Washington - where the foreign policy establishment is decidedly not sympathetic to Morales's populist agenda - has been that the referendum would settle nothing. Bolivia remains divided, say the pundits, along geographic (eastern lowland states versus the west), ethnic (indigenous versus non-indigenous), and class (rich...

Nanotubes Could Make For Bouncy Cellphones: I'm Talkin' to You Butterfingers [Nanotubes]Ah nanotubes. Is there anything you can't almost possibly do? Well, now you can add bouncy cellphones to the list because a team of Clemson University researchers have developed a way to make beds of tiny, shock-absorbing coiled carbon nanotubes which could be used to cushion objects from damaging impacts. They hope that these coiled nanotubes could be used in everything from body armor to cellphones in the near future. Coiled nanotubes are nothing new, but the real breakthrough for the Clemson team has come in the production process. The problem was that no one had developed a way to...
