India DTH players look to high-def to differentiateFiled under: Industry, Satellite, New contentIf you've been content just focusing on sectors in your own nation, you may have missed all the DTH congestion in India. At last count, there are five different satcasters serving the country, and now some are making accelerated pushes to get high-def programming on the air in order to stand out. A recent report from New Delhi asserts that Dish TV and Sun Direct are both hoping to add high-definition content in separate tiers within "the next few months." Specifics are relatively scant, but Indians can probably expect between 10 to 15 HD stations...

Eco Cars: Engineering students develop human-solar hybrid car Eco Factor: Hybrid car powered by pedals and solar energy While solar-powered cars are nothing new when it comes to designing them on paper, an engineering professor Dr. Tai-Ran Hsu and his team of some students have developed an electric vehicle that can be powered by both pedals and solar energy. What is being touted as the first project that involves solar energy in a mobile system by Dr. Hsu, the car carries four solar panels on the roof and the hood that power the four silicone batteries of the car. Apart from solar energy the car’s batteries can...

Yahoo technology will offer abstracts of search resultsYahoo's lab in India is developing technology that will summarize information about Web search results rather than simply offer links as search engines currently do."When you type in a search today, you get a list of URLs (uniform resource locators), and they are not very informative," Rajeev Rastogi, vice president of Yahoo Labs Bangalore said on Thursday.[ Keep up on the latest tech news headlines at InfoWorld News, or subscribe to the Today's Headlines newsletter. ]The technology, which will be offered on Yahoo Search next year, will offer small abstracts of the key information behind a URL, Rastogi said. It Gets WorseOne wonders how out of it NRO can get, and then one reads this from Victor Davis Hanson:FISA and wire-intercepts of terrorist communications in the pre-Obama president months were once derided as more of Ashcroft-Bush stomping on the Constitution — except that now ABC News reports that, in fact, US intelligence agencies supplied India with general knowledge of the rough time period, place, and perhaps even method of terrorist attack. Are we to believe that such newfound capability to warn a country 7000 miles away about terrorist infiltration on its borders would be of no utility here at home?Does Hanson...

It's BombayHitch informs me that the change in name to Mumbai is a function of Hindu chauvinism:When Salman Rushdie wrote, in The Moor's Last Sigh in 1995, that "those who hated India, those who sought to ruin it, would need to ruin Bombay," he was alluding to the Hindu chauvinists who had tried to exert their own monopoly in the city and who had forcibly renamed it—after a Hindu goddess—Mumbai. We all now collude with this, in the same way that most newspapers and TV stations do the Burmese junta's work for it by using the fake name Myanmar. (Bombay's hospital...

The Gathering StormPublius is worried by the emotions unleashed by the Mumbai atrocities: I fear we could be on the brink of WWI-style situation where we lose control of events. In the run-up to WWI, even though everyone knew on some level that nationalistic overreaction would lead to even more horrible outcomes, the internal politics drove them all past the point of no return. Events ultimately spiraled out of control, and the 20th Century never fully recovered. I don’t have any answers – but the rising anger in India is arguably the most urgent issue on Earth at the moment. So I...

Exchange Your Windows PC or TV for an Apple iMac Exchange your old Laptop or TV for a new Apple iMac "Beautiful but expensive" - that’s how most people like to describe Apple products here in India. Now to lure this set of cost-conscious consumers (and also vanish some Windows computers), Apple India has come up with a exchange offer where you can walk into any of the Apple retail stores with your old Windows PC (or laptop or TV) and get Rs. 6,000 ($120) off on the purchase of a new iMac. The basic model of an iMac costs around Rs 56,000 in India. Other than this exchange...

"Both Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have maintained warm relations for years with India and the Indian-American community. As New York's senator for eight years and as a 2008 presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton toured India and visited with Indian officials and entrepreneurs, and her campaigns profited from the largesse of Indian-American fundraisers. Bill Clinton's charitable foundation has been funded by some of the same well-heeled Indian businessmen who backed his wife's campaigns." - Atul Arora

US Warned India In October About Mumbai-Style Terror Attack — U.S. intelligence agencies warned their Indian counterparts in mid-October of a potential attack "from the sea against hotels and business centers in Mumbai," a U.S. intelligence official tells ABCNews.com. A second government source say specific locations, including the Taj hotel, were listed in the U.S. warning. One month later, Nov. 18, Indian intelligence also intercepted a satellite phone call to a number in Pakistan known to be used by a leader of the terror group, Lashkar e Taiba, believed responsible for the weekend attack, Indian intelligence officials say. The Indian intercept also revealed a possible sea-borne attack, the officials say....
