Bush Admin Planning To Sign First Nuclear Pact With Middle Eastern Nation — The Bush administration plans to sign its first nuclear-cooperation agreement with a Middle Eastern nation within the next few weeks, according to a senior U.S. official, raising concerns among congressional critics who say the deal could fuel nuclear proliferation in the region. The proposed deal with the United Arab Emirates has attracted attention because the U.A.E.'s largest trading partner is Iran. The U.A.E. has served in the past as a transshipment point for technology with military applications headed to Iran....

"President-elect Barack Obama intends to offer Israel a "nuclear umbrella" in the event of a nuclear strike by Iran, according to a defense source close to the administration quoted by an Israeli newspaper. Under such an agreement, the United States would promise to use nuclear weapons against Iran should Israel be atomically attacked. Obama's secretary of State, Sen. Hillary Clinton, promised a similar "massive response" should Israel come under attack during the Democratic presidential debates." - Sean McBride
Someone please explain: since Israel already possesses a large arsenal of nuclear weapons, and would totally obliterate Iran if Iran attacked Israel with WMDs of any kind, why are Obama and Clinton pushing this policy? - Sean McBride
like, two wrongs make a right? is this a direct quote from the pres-elect? .... what the heck is going on here ? ... no source named though .. propaganda all the way ... - gregory lent
I predicted several weeks ago that Obama was under the thumb of neocons in the Democratic Party, and that his administration would be dominated by the "totally obliterate Iran" theme promoted by Hillary Clinton during the presidential campaign. I get many of my tech and political predictions right, and this one may be no exception. - Sean McBride
And what policy other than MAD would you like? Nuke Israel and we'll bake you cookies? - todd
Since Israel is fully capable of nuking Iran by itself, why is it necessary for the United States to state this policy? Is the plan to make the rubble bounce? - Sean McBride
And here is the bigger question: is it smart for the United States to get caught in the middle of a struggle between two messianic branches of monotheism that are both implacably opposed to any meaningful arrangement of mutual tolerance and coexistence? We are already being bled dry to the tune of several trillions of dollars thanks to a little adventure in Iraq. Matters could get much worse. - Sean McBride
What rubble? Are you assuming that Iran will nuke Israel? - Michael Markman
Unless they have a delivery platform outside of Israel the assurance makes sense. The US can nuke you from any place, I'm not sure that's true for Israel. - todd
Michael - I am assuming that Iran would never nuke Israel because Israel would nuke Iran in return. Where is the need for the United States to promise to nuke Iran in this scenario? Am I missing something obvious here? - Sean McBride
Todd - do you have a pointer to a reputable scholarly paper or source arguing that Israel would be unable to respond to a nuclear first strike from Iran? - Sean McBride
Apologies Sean for my comments a couple of days ago.I have learned a lesson - Do Not Comment When Drinking (im still very new to the Interwebs). I wonder about the propaganda angle. I could see that in a campaign - in order to give an impression of not being soft on Defence. But now? This isnt about getting a certain demographic to vote for you - its about dealing with the world as it is. This is where we are moving if Iran is allowed to develop Nukes. - laprensa66
From Haaretz: "A senior Bush administration source said that the proposal for an American nuclear umbrella for Israel was ridiculous and lacked credibility. "Who will convince the citizen in Kansas that the U.S. needs to get mixed up in a nuclear war because Haifa was bombed? And what is the point of an American response, after Israel's cities are destroyed in an Iranian nuclear strike?"" http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1045687.html - Sean McBride
Sean, do you have a source that says they would? Even the perception that retaliation isn't assured is a sign of weakness that would invite attack. I would want that line of thinking torpedoed if I were Israel. Seems like basic strategy to me. - todd
Well, fuck. Do we have to go back to mutually assured destruction again? - Heather Mina
Good rule of thumb: post only when you're feeling calm, cheerful, centered, lucid and sober. - Sean McBride
That's a really good rule of thumb Sean. - Jason Wehmhoener
todd - do I have source that says that Israel would retaliate against a nuclear attack by Iran with a nuclear attack against Iran? Is one really required? Did you mean something else? I just did a quick scan of global news and opinion, and everyone else seems to be asking the same question I raised. - Sean McBride

US Tests New Missile Defensepumpkinpuss writes "The US military yesterday shot down a missile in a test simulating a long-range ballistic missile attack by a potential adversary such as North Korea or Iran. The target missile was launched from Kodiak Island, Alaska, at 3:04 PM Eastern time, tracked simultaneously by several ground and ship-based radars, and intercepted by a 'kill vehicle' 3,000 kilometers away over the Pacific 25 minutes later, according to the Missile Defense Agency. Lt. Gen. Patrick O'Reilly said, 'The kill vehicle was sent to a very accurate spot in space giving us great confidence.'" Reader gilgsn points out the testing of...

And what would Iran's response look like? - Sean McBride
Probably tell Hezbollah to start lobbing katusha rockets in to Israel 24 hours a day. - Peter Simard
Sigh. - Heather Mina
are they that foolish? - gregory lent
Peter - it seems likely that Iran would target Dimona and the Gulf of Hormuz, right? $10 a gallon gas or more would be one likely result. - Sean McBride
The sad thing (well, one of them) is: if they did, they'd probably have more legitimate pretext than we had when we invaded Iraq. - Chester

“America’s Margin Of Safety Is Shrinking, Not Growing”The Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism will release its report this week. The bottom line:The odds that terrorists will soon strike a major city with weapons of mass destruction are now better than even, a bipartisan congressionally mandated task force concludes in a draft study that warns of growing threats from rogue states, nuclear smuggling networks and the spread of atomic know-how in the developing world.Gordon Chang's prescription delineates the immense difficulty of doing anything to stop it:We must, for instance, disarm North Korea, stop Iran and Syria, and stabilize Pakistan. And to...

Kristol's Next War: Send The US Marines After Somali Pirates — In addition to being a booster of the two actual wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Bill Kristol and/or his publication has, at one time or another, also called for the United States to go to war with North Korea, Syria, Iran, and Sudan. And now he's got another war he's like to start: And while [Bush is] at it, perhaps he could tell various admirals to stop moaning about how difficult it would be to deal with the pirates off the coast of Somalia (isn't keeping the shipping lanes open a core mission of the Navy?) and order the Navy...

Gates offers Obama stability but not perfect matchBy Andrew Gray WASHINGTON, Nov 30 (Reuters) - President-elect Barack Obama's reported decision to ask Robert Gates to stay as U.S. defense secretary has been widely praised but it may lead to at least a few awkward moments for both men. While Gates has tried to stay out of domestic politics and avoided direct criticism of Obama during the election campaign, he has advocated policies that have been at odds with Obama on issues such as the Iraq war and relations with Iran....

oh i doubt this. remember how recently turkey sternly opposed American military deployments and usage of its territory for quenching unrest in Iraq? why would Turkey seem more pliant now, especially considering that it is about Iran, which can retaliate on Turkey directly.. - Hayk
Hayk - one should never underestimate the ability of highly motivated people to find a way towards their goal, often in surprising and unexpected ways. But your arguments make sense. - Sean McBride
You are right, Sean. Israel proved, in many instances, to be beyond any prediction or anticipation. Why not now. - Hayk

A terrorist attack in Mumbai is on the other side of the world, but it's all surprisingly connected. India and Pakistan are constant bitter enemies. Both are nuclear powers. Pakistan may be on the verge of becoming a failed state. Their new PM is the widower of a recently assassinated leader and the Taliban, which is encamped in tribal areas near the Afghan border, are wielding more power in Pakistan. There's fear they might get control of one or more of Pakistan's nukes. Also camped out in the tribal areas are Al Qaeda, and if he's still alive, almost for...

Why Is Gates Staying?Steve Clemons has a theory:He wants to try and push Iran-US relations into a constructive direction. He wants to change the game in Afghanistan -- and the answer will not be a military-dominant strategy. He wants to try and stabilize Iraq in a negotiated, confidence building process that includes Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey and other regional forces. And he wants to support a big push on Israel-Palestine peace and reconfigure relations between much of the Arab League and Israel. And Obama asked him. And trusts him. There will be more Scowcroft under Obama than under Bush....
