Jean-Baptiste Jung also known as the guy behind the site CatsWhoCode.com and a great member of the WordPress community has shared his success story on how he launched his relatively new site, WPRecipes.com. I know that Performancing readers are always interested in learning new techniques or ideas when it comes to promotion or marketing so be sure to read his post and jot down some ideas. One thing in particular worth pointing out is that, Jean proves my point in that asking to exchange links with someone doesn't work as I've explained before. When reading his success story, notice...
There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of writing guides out there. But in my opinion, none surpass the simple, direct advice of The Elements of Style by William Strunk, Jr. and E.B.White. This classic serves up much good advice, especially in the last 20 pages in a section titled “An Approach to Style.” Nowhere have I seen more helpful advice in so few words and with such precision. This is why I always keep this book within reach. If (for shame) you don’t already have this reference in your library, I will leave it to you to explore it in...
Smashing Magazine has posted a list of what they're calling 40 Exquisite Independent Film Posters, a showcase of indie film one-sheets that dared to take a more stylized approach than the stock "floating heads" approach. I'm not sure I agree with their assessment that the face of a concerned skater kid on the Paranoid Park poster is necessarily "exquisite", per se, but it was nice to be reminded of beauties like the above Chris Ware-designed Savages poster once more before death. Before you go, remember to grab a pen and paper so you can jot down which you want...
Do you find your life a little routine, like you're stuck in a rut? Does it seem like you barely have time for work and life commitments, let alone creative outlets? It's unfortunate but it seems for many of us, the daily grind of doing what we need to do in order to survive often saps us of our creativity. Instead of being sapped, how would you like to be zapped? How would your life be different if you were more creative? What would you do differently if you had the time and energy to tap into your creativity? Would you enjoy...
When are you at your creative peak? That is, what time of day do ideas flow most easily for you? What activities bring your best ideas to the surface where you can most easily gather them up? A recent survey by the Crown Plaza hotel group suggests that certain times and activities are more conducive to creative thinking than others [PDF download]. The most creative time, they found, was late in the evening (around 10 pm), while their respondents were at the least creative in the late afternoon (around 4:30 pm). The survey also found that most respondents were...
I used to live blog. Whenever I attended events, I would bring out my laptop, connect via the provided WiFi or through my mobile phone, and then post photos and updates as they happen. It's either I have one long post, which I add to every so often. Or I break it down into different posts, depending on the importance of what I had to say. I see many people doing this, too. Post-event updates usually include a ton of links to bloggers who have posted about events live. This is made even easier today, with netbooks (ultraportable laptops), smartphones,...
One of the most consistently provocative conferences I attended last year — my own Money:Tech 2008 aside, of course — was Eric Norlin’s Defrag conference. Oodles of interesting people, lots of great conversation and all of it aimed at one of my favorite subjects: How we cope with the information tsunami. Paul Kedrosky, Defrag 2008 Conference I spent two days out in Denver earlier this week at Defrag 2008 with Connectbeam. As Kedrosky notes above, the conference is dedicated to managing the increasing amount of information we’re all exposed to. Now my conference experience is limited. I’ve been to...
After an in-depth viewing of Twin Peaks, I’m ready to write a few all-encompassing posts on the series as a whole. First, I’ll jot down some thoughts on Season 2, which was split into two halves, the first covering the conclusion of the Laura Palmer case, and the second tackling the mysterious Windham Earle and the discovery of the Black Lodge. Who Killed Laura Palmer? The identity of Laura’s killer was unknown after Season 1 following a brutal and oddly unsatisfying season finale - Cooper lay shot by a mysterious killer (it turned out to be Josie), and the Packard...
Tokyo-based stationery maker King Jim today introduced the Pomera, a Japan-only ultra-mobile handheld device, which is marketed as an add-on to notebooks and PCs. The Pomera is sized at just 145×100x30mm (weight: 370 grams) and features a slightly futuristic, foldable keyboard as the main selling point. When unfolded (King Jim says this just takes 2 seconds), users can type in characters on a 250mm wide QWERTY keyboard. The Pomera also comes with a 4-inch monochrome TFT screen with a resolution of 640×480. It runs for 20 hours with just 2 AAA batteries. King Jim says the Pomera is developed...
If you’re a teacher of a particular class in the K-12 bracket, and you would enjoy a quick and inexpensive way to piece together a website with all the necessary trappings to a schoolroom environment - such as a homework page, contact field, calendar, and perhaps even a grade report to be privately or publicly accessible - a service called Classtell maybe just what you’re looking for. For starters, the end product of the Classtell service isn’t the most beautiful you could imagine. Apart from a half dozen color options, it’s fairly plain. But few rooms in the average elementary school...
When do I want to retire? How much do I want to have saved? What sorts of things do I want to accomplish before then? I’ve begun to think seriously about these questions lately. Jim at Blueprint for Financial Prosperity recently offered some tips on how to draft a basic financial savings plan, a tool that could help me craft a road map for my future. He says that failure to plan is one of the seven deadly sins of personal finance. I agree. I believe that the road to wealth is paved with goals, and planning is one of...
Eco Factor: When your music player is drained off its reserve and the sun is shying behind the clouds, you can juice your gadgets with the power of wind. Wind turbines, mounted on tall towers are meant to power homes but what about my doodads? Making a DIY, small wind powered generator is not my cup of tea. Hence the need for Mini Kin green power generator arises. Simply power it with a mild current of air to absorb all the energy needed to feed the gadgets on the go. It features a battery that can store enough windy...
By Jay Maharjan on October 25, 2007 We recently started a radio advertisement campaign on CBS KFWB Los Angeles. KFWB 980 is one of the largest radio stations in the city known for its second largest media market in the world. This was the first time we prepared a script for a station with million + listeners. So far, we have already run 2 separate spots. Interestingly, one worked and the other didn’t. Use simple scripts Using technical jargon or unfamiliar business terms in the script will confuse listeners. Our first set of ads was straight forward, with the terms...
