Disney: The happiest recovery play on Earth Filed under: Walt Disney (DIS), Bargain stocks, Stocks to Buy, Recession There truly are very few places to hide during the current financial crisis and economic recession. Trust in the markets is at an all-time low, and volatility is at an all-time high. The most senior of professionals in this business are shaking their heads in amazement. We have not seen anything like this during our lifetimes. When it will end is anyone’s guess. The silver lining, I suppose, is that it will indeed end at some point. When it does, investors can look forward to a landscape of...

DoubleTake adds VMware Expert Session: Keeping Data Current Throughout the P2V Process VMworld VRA Expert Session Overview Though server virtualization technology has changed the IT landscape for the better in many ways, it has also presented several new challenges. One of the chief concerns that IT decision makers face is how to most effectively migrate between disparate server and storage infrastructures without halting production applications or requiring extensive manual intervention. Using a combination of real-time data replication and full-server failover technologies for workload migration can be an effective way to address this challenge. This Expert Sesssion will run on VMworld.com from December 1-19th. View the Double-Take Virtual Recovery Assistant video and...

When Not To Photograph - TWIP We’ve all been through it. You head out on the family vacation, very excited about the chance to make some striking new images of a new place. But then you find out all the tours leave at Noon and the venues are all crowded. Or you head off to photograph that nice field of flowers only to realize that today is very windy. Sometimes, as hard as it might be, the best photograph to make is no photograph. Bad light is always going to be bad light. And as we used to say, “The slides won’t get any better...

Palm: On track to become a historical footnote — Remember when Palm - maker of the Pilot and Tungsten PDAs and later the Treo smartphone - was the dominant player in the handheld device business? Today, it’s a completely different landscape. Apple’s iPhone has recently dominated the smartphone space. RIM is making a big push with the launch of consumer-friendly versions of the Blackberry. Nikon Announces $8000, 24.5 Megapixel D3X Nikon has announced the D3X, a new full frame DSLR with a whopping 24.5 megapixels. It is, more or less, a D3 with a bigger sensor and a bigger price tag. How big? $8000 big. About that sensor. It will give images of up to 6048 x 4032 pixels, and runs from ISO 100 to a rather conservative ISO 1600, compared to the ISO 6400 available on the smaller 12MP D3. The images coming off that sensor range up to a huge 138 MB, making a 2GB CF card look like a 12 exposure 135 film. Amazingly, Nikon says...

BlackBerry Storm OS 4.7.0.76, other versions left dead in their tracks What’s that? You somehow got a hold of the 4.7.0.75 OS for the BlackBerry Storm? Well, in this heavily-connected world we call BG Land, you’re already rockin’ something old. We’re running 4.7.0.76 on our Storm, and boy, does this thing improve a whole heap more than 4.7.0.75 did. Here’s a list of the improvements we’ve found (and bugs) For starters, switching portrait to landscape is even faster than on .75. We’re talking half a second to make a clean switch. No more “double keyboards” (half SureType, half QWERTY) on the screen. After around a full day of use, our...

Tree Portraits A description: In this series, "TREE," the "photography-act" is more than a click. The canvas that frames each tree is there by human design, turning the object into a subject, pulling it out of the landscape. The artist in her own words: Trees are attractive objects in that they enable people to think philosophically and appreciate aesthetically. But too often, we don’t recognize the value of ordinary mundane objects around us. Seeing trees in a refreshing way or restoring the value of trees is to awaken all beings on earth in my work. A few more after the jump:...

One year ago link shortening service TinyURL experienced an extended period of down time and we argued that the outage illustrated serious risks associated with the service. One year later, the landscape doesn't look any less bleak. A search of the web turns up complaint after complaint after complaint about TinyURL being down and links being broken - apparently for at least a day or two every month. People should stop using TinyURL! In the following post we'll list a few reasons why this is important and point you towards some of the best alternative link shorteners. Sponsor Who Cares?...

"People should stop using TinyURL! In the following post we'll list a few reasons why this is important and point you towards some of the best alternative link shorteners." - Hutch Carpenter
What is the preferred alternative to TinyURL that you use? - Amani
Fine, I'll use bit.ly, though I don't really see the big deal. - Pete Delucchi
i use is.gd and bit.ly - Matt Musgrave
I really don't see the issue -- unless you are providing your own service -- each of these is about as likely as the other of failing. Stopping using one and using another doesn't really solve any problem. - Brian Sullivan
I had never run into the problem and I always use tinyurl. - CS Techcast
I use TinyURL as much as I can. is.gd fills in during times of slowness. - Louis Gray
slow news day? - Allen Stern
Tr.im - Sweyn
every1 try http://urlborg.com it's a friends project with more than bit.ly's features and a very rich API! just visit and see :) - Apostolos Papadopoulos
I only use it for stuff on Twitter and FF. If the link gets broken it's not the end of the world. If it is critical then I wouldn't use any of these services. - Kenton
One Year Later, Too Many People Are Still Using TinyURL - Tac Anderson
Cli.gs rules. - Svartling
I use is.gd because it's so short. - Martin Bryant
+1 Swartling. I use cli.gs the most. Analytics with shortend links. Gotta love it - James
I use tr.im. Maybe not as technically complete as bit.ly, but good enough, and a much better name. - Eric Woodward
+1 for tr.im. Best name by far. But I am biased. - Gersham Meharg
One Year Later, Too Many People Are Still Using TinyURL - Karl Sackett
When anyone else comes out with a Firefox plug-in, I'll change. Until then... - Robert Worstell
UrlBorg - Morton Fox
Didn't one of those services die? I'm going to use what's popular, in the hopes that it will be more likely to survive than its upstart competitors. - MiniMage
is.gd because i can type it in the address bar fast, and i haven't tried many others - genieyclo
I'm a tr.im guy - Abbas Haider Ali
I love Bit.ly analytics are the best part about it, using the bookmarklet and support and TweetDeck are also great. - Mark Krynsky
I was using is.gd for a while until I heard about bit.ly. It has many more features. The best I can tell of all URL shortening services. tr.im looks cool but it does not have enough features to make me want to switch from bit.ly. Yet. - Rolf Schewe
Oh and tr.im is a great name. - Rolf Schewe
Build your own: http://thesidepath.com/ Also, agreeing with the comments on the article - switching services does nothing to solve the problem (in fact, if you use an alternative and they disappear, it makes it much worse). - flammable

Look, it's a free service. It's not making money from any of the people complaining, who just expect it to work, no matter what. Sure, it has ads on its website, but how many people visit its website? Most rely on the API. It bugs me too when it's down, but if it's free and you don't like it, then (and I'm addressing all complainers here) just shut up or find another service. - Raoul Pop
bit.ly? - Rahsheen Porter
I hate the URL shortening sites that do /not/ offer a "preview" feature like TinyUrl.com does. - Dylan Bennett

A Good Thing if LBO for BCE FailsThere’s a lot of hand-wringing going on over growing concerns the $52-billion leveraged buyout of BCE Inc., Canada’s largest telecom carrier, is going to fall apart. If the deal does go kaput, it will be the best thing to happen to BCE and its customers. How come? Well, if the deal is consummated, BCE will 10s of billions of dollars of debt to service at a time when competition from cablecos is wickedly fierce. Despite this competitive landscape, BCE would still need to jump-start cash flow to pay down debt. One tool already being used by BCE to boost cash...

uTorrent for Mac beta officially releasedFiled under: Internet Tools, Beta Beat Way back in June of 2007, rumors of a beta version of uTorrent for the Mac first started making waves. For the uninitiated, uTorrent is a super-lightweight BitTorrent client which is widely considered the best in the business. Sadly, it has remained a Windows-only option. A few months ago, an alpha version was leaked (appropriately, on a BitTorrent tracker), but it was alpha, buggy and had a minimal UI (even by uTorrent standards). Today, uTorrent has officially released its first Mac beta for Intel Macs running OS X 10.5 Leopard. It doesn't have all...

The Pedal Pushers Show Us That Hell Projects Aren't Just For The Boys: Pullover Rally 2008 [Rally]The whole car-freak thing seems like an all-XY-chromosome deal sometimes, but it's just not so; here's an all-women car club that roars across the East Bay landscape in a fleet of temperamental spirited Italian, French, and German vintage cars (plus a couple of Detroit products), blasting a few stereotypes in the process. The Pedal Pushers had an Oakland-to-Port Costa rally a couple weeks back, and TheEastBayKid was there with his '76 BMW 2002 and camera to get some shots for us. Jump away for the rest of the gallery!...

Has Harajuku Lost Its Cool? While Gwen Stefani continues promoting her Harajuku Lovers perfumes in the US, The Japan Times reports on some local concerns that Harajuku’s reputation for being the coolest district in Tokyo is on the decline. The latest addition to the Harajuku landscape comes in the form of a 1,500 sq meter H&M store. Isn’t it interesting how in some parts of the world, the arrival of an H&M might be deemed a gift from the fashion gods. In Harajuku, here’s what one shopkeeper had to say: “What concerns us about big chains coming to Harajuku is that the special atmosphere...
