Maddow: A tale of two bailoutsRachel Maddow interviews Leo Gerard, the President of the United Steelworkers Union and asks if the auto industry is getting tougher treatment than the financial industry did when it was their turn for a bailout. Gerard goes through the list of bailouts that have cost our economy trillions of dollars and notes that no one complained when CEOs made away with hundreds of billions of dollars over the years while they have taken our entire economy down the tank. He makes some great points on how "we've treated the people who take a shower after work much different than we've...

Brazil Announces Plan to Slow Amazon Deforestation by 70% photo: Leo Freitas A few months ago Brazil announced that rates of deforestation in the Amazon increased 3.8% over the previous year and that it would be taking steps to crack down on illegal logging, land clearing (sometimes by burning) and illegal settlements. The country also established the Amazon Fund to solicit international monetary donations to help fund anti-deforestation efforts. Now Brazil has announced that it has a plan to reduce deforestation by 70%, or abo......

This is a guest post from Leo Babauta of Zen Habits and Write To Done. These days my blog, Zen Habits, no longer has the problems of finding its identity and finding an audience … but there was a time not too long ago when Zen Habits was just a baby going through the inevitable growing pains. And yes, I remember struggling to find new readers — to just let people know I was even there. The early days of a blog are the toughest, by far. But they don’t have to be. When a blog is still young, just...

24 Kooky, Crazy and Creative Clock Design We are governed by it. We never seem to have enough of it. We have even grown accustomed to having an item of furniture that precisely reminds us of it (and, more recently, having it strapped to our arms). Our love affair with clocks isn’t set to end soon - especially when we are really starting to play with the creative possibilities, as these 24 examples illustrate. (Images via: iO) Marketed as the first clock that appreciates how people really tell the time (although there are others featured below), the It’s About Time clock rounds up or down in...

The West Wing: ShibbolethFiled under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free(Originally aired November 22, 2000)Last year I picked The West Wing's "The Indians in the Lobby" episode as a standout episode of the series. It just so happens that we're blessed with two Thanksgiving episodes of the show that are standouts. This one is called "Shibboleth."The plots: While President Bartlet has to figure out what to do with dozens of Chinese immigrants who have stowed away on a freighter, Toby tries to get Leo's controversial sister nominated for an education post, C.J. has to pick one of two turkeys who will get...

Phyllis F. Mitz: Ask Phyllis...Astrology and Beyond: Sibling-Starved Cancer — Dear Ask Phyllis Readers, I'm pleased to introduce Dr. Susan Guthrie, a Psychotherapist and Life Coach as guest writer to Ask Phyllis. I thought you would enjoy comparing an astrological perspective with a psychological perspective on queries. We'd love your feedback askphyllis@gmail.com *** Dear Phyllis, Five years ago my Leo* sister married a Scorpio* man who controls her with tantrums and emotional manipulation. She used to be very close to me and the rest of the family, but she virtually never calls or tries to see us anymore. I've tried telling her many times how much I miss but she...

I’ve been scouring the Web to find more blogs on creativity and idea development and I encountered something… unusual. A Google search led me to Creative Something, which seems to be a really good blog about the creative process. The search led me to a blog post that listed other blogs about creativity - great! When I clicked on the link, though, I found something that I hadn’t seen very often before: The blog’s author has made the full content available only to RSS subscribers. Try this link and you’ll see what I mean. I haven’t seen this happen very...

Phyllis F. Mitz: Ask Phyllis...Astrology and Beyond: Leo The Cowardly Lion? — Dear Phyllis, I just got a job offer to work with a very powerful executive born July 12th.* She's famous for her talent and leadership in our industry. But she's also famous for being really tough on her employees. I want this job and all the status and experience it offers. But I'm so afraid of this woman's temper I hesitate to accept this position. I'm a Leo born August 11th*. I know I'm supposed to be strong but I'm afraid of being humiliated. Ideas? Signed, ambitious, but cowardly Lion Dear Leo, Take heart! This looks like a great job...

Michelle @ CRAFT points us to Leo Kempf, who writes: I made this house for my cat, Olive. She enters through a door in the bottom side and then ascends a ramp, which boosts her to the upper level. The front wall is plexi-glass, the floor is 2.5 inch thick old sheepskin rug, and my wife made some small paintings that hang on the walls. There is also a big cardboard scratching porch. Cats love to scratch and relax on cardboard. The top is removable and the glass slides out for maintenance. Read more | Permalink | Comments |...

ChickensRoss thinks the Republican party is closing ranks:Oh, the pundits will fight, as they have been for a while, but for a serious circular firing squad you need the activist groups to turn on one another. You might think that a defeat like the one the GOP endured last week would prompt Grover Norquist to argue that the Republican Party needs to ditch its warmongers and its theocrats, or prompt Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council to argue that the GOP needs to ditch its flat-tax obsessives, or prompt the Federalist Society's Leonard Leo to complain about all those...

On Holidays!I was on my way to put together a new blog post over here on this blog, one of the various drafts I have got piled from the plenty of stuff that happened this week, and to comment on a few others I have bumped into in the last couple of days, yet my brain has not been very co-operative for the last couple of hours. Main reason being that as of now I am officially on holidays! Yay! Yes, indeed, I am going to take a short break, from the moment I get to post this entry and till...

Deborah Copaken Kogan: Dear Almost President-Elect Obama — Dear Almost President-Elect Obama, Congratulations. I'm sure you're going to be very busy over the next few days coming down from the high of winning and finding the socks you left in Buffalo and building your cabinet and all, but I'm busy, too, and that's what I'd like to talk to you about. As I write this, my 2-year-old is asleep in the other room. Why? Because his daycare center has a day off for the elections. So basically, I figure you owe me. We need government-subsidized daycare. As in yesterday. We're one of the only industrialized nations in the...

Some People Are Happy with Their PCsThis guest blog post comes courtesy of ‘Leo’ - with his punctuation, usage, spelling, and grammar intact… For the last couple of years I have been observing people over and over again bash Microsoft and its products. While some of these criticisms were valid, most of the negative remarks were grossly exaggerated. I think most of the disapproval came from the problems with vista’s launch and apple’s commercials. While there are apple products I like, I own an ipod touch and would buy an iphone if it were not on at&t’s service, I am more than happy with my pc...

Still searching for that new Gmail free texting feature we heard about on Friday? Turns out the reports of its debut were true — but Google has run into some technical troubles and has decided to delay the rollout as a result. In case you didn’t see the original story, word leaked last week that Gmail Labs would be adding an SMS chat option. It’ll let you send a text message to any U.S. mobile phone through Gmail’s Web-based chat interface. All of your texts will come from a specific and constant 406 area code, so people can text back...

Mastering the Art of Prioritization There are two approaches to “prioritizing” the tasks in your to-do list that I see fairly often. By prioritization, I’m not talking so much about assigning importance to tasks, but deciding which will take chronological priority in your day—figuring out which tasks you’ll do first, and which you’ll leave to last Approach number one involves tackling the biggest tasks first and getting them out of the way. The idea is that by tackling them first you deal with the pressure and anxiety that builds up and prevents you from getting anything done—whether we’re talking about big or small tasks....
