photo: Leo Freitas A few months ago Brazil announced that rates of deforestation in the Amazon increased 3.8% over the previous year and that it would be taking steps to crack down on illegal logging, land clearing (sometimes by burning) and illegal settlements. The country also established the Amazon Fund to solicit international monetary donations to help fund anti-deforestation efforts. Now Brazil has announced that it has a plan to reduce deforestation by 70%, or abo......
We are governed by it. We never seem to have enough of it. We have even grown accustomed to having an item of furniture that precisely reminds us of it (and, more recently, having it strapped to our arms). Our love affair with clocks isn’t set to end soon - especially when we are really starting to play with the creative possibilities, as these 24 examples illustrate. (Images via: iO) Marketed as the first clock that appreciates how people really tell the time (although there are others featured below), the It’s About Time clock rounds up or down in...
Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free(Originally aired November 22, 2000)Last year I picked The West Wing's "The Indians in the Lobby" episode as a standout episode of the series. It just so happens that we're blessed with two Thanksgiving episodes of the show that are standouts. This one is called "Shibboleth."The plots: While President Bartlet has to figure out what to do with dozens of Chinese immigrants who have stowed away on a freighter, Toby tries to get Leo's controversial sister nominated for an education post, C.J. has to pick one of two turkeys who will get...
I’ve been scouring the Web to find more blogs on creativity and idea development and I encountered something… unusual. A Google search led me to Creative Something, which seems to be a really good blog about the creative process. The search led me to a blog post that listed other blogs about creativity - great! When I clicked on the link, though, I found something that I hadn’t seen very often before: The blog’s author has made the full content available only to RSS subscribers. Try this link and you’ll see what I mean. I haven’t seen this happen very...
Upon the realization that even scrapbook aficionados had a magazine of their own, someone set out to gather together productivity-centric tips, tricks, and interviews to balance the publication universe. Productive! magazine gives a strong show right out of the gate with a David Allen interview and great tips from organizational gurus like Leo Babauta of the Zen to Done blog. If you're looking for a little extra productivity reading for a lazy Sunday evening, check out the free digital edition. Productive! Magazine [via jkOnTheRun]...

Michelle @ CRAFT points us to Leo Kempf, who writes: I made this house for my cat, Olive. She enters through a door in the bottom side and then ascends a ramp, which boosts her to the upper level. The front wall is plexi-glass, the floor is 2.5 inch thick old sheepskin rug, and my wife made some small paintings that hang on the walls. There is also a big cardboard scratching porch. Cats love to scratch and relax on cardboard. The top is removable and the glass slides out for maintenance. Read more | Permalink | Comments |...
I was on my way to put together a new blog post over here on this blog, one of the various drafts I have got piled from the plenty of stuff that happened this week, and to comment on a few others I have bumped into in the last couple of days, yet my brain has not been very co-operative for the last couple of hours. Main reason being that as of now I am officially on holidays! Yay! Yes, indeed, I am going to take a short break, from the moment I get to post this entry and till...
Still searching for that new Gmail free texting feature we heard about on Friday? Turns out the reports of its debut were true — but Google has run into some technical troubles and has decided to delay the rollout as a result. In case you didn’t see the original story, word leaked last week that Gmail Labs would be adding an SMS chat option. It’ll let you send a text message to any U.S. mobile phone through Gmail’s Web-based chat interface. All of your texts will come from a specific and constant 406 area code, so people can text back...
There are two approaches to “prioritizing” the tasks in your to-do list that I see fairly often. By prioritization, I’m not talking so much about assigning importance to tasks, but deciding which will take chronological priority in your day—figuring out which tasks you’ll do first, and which you’ll leave to last Approach number one involves tackling the biggest tasks first and getting them out of the way. The idea is that by tackling them first you deal with the pressure and anxiety that builds up and prevents you from getting anything done—whether we’re talking about big or small tasks....
