Facebook Connect: Scary but good One of the companies adopting Facebook's new log-in system, Facebook Connect, is CBS, parent company of CNET and publisher of Webware. I'm glad we're on board with this program, even if I do feel it's a bit of Faustian deal. Here's why. First of all, CNET's own log-in system (which you see when you want to leave a comment on a CNET blog post, write a user review, or participate in other CNET community features) is not universally loved inside CNET. There are factions here at the company who want it changed, or even eliminated in some cases. There...

Yahoo Search Takes Another Blow - Lead Engineer Leaving — And the rumor is he's going to Microsoft. Should that prove true, another reason to make that Yahoo/MSFT search deal happen. Details at All Things D: Yahoo–which has stuck to its guns by staying in the search business, even though many think it is a losing game and should be sold off to Microsoft–has lost a key engineer in that arena to, uh-oh, Microsoft. Sean Suchter, the VP of Search Technology at Yahoo, was also deeply involved in Yahoo’s efforts to open up its search platform, initiatives the company has touted aggressively as a bright spot in its not-so-lustrous...

Yahoo Search Suffers Another Blow, As Key Engineer Departs For Microsoft Yahoo–which has stuck to its guns by staying in the search business, even though many think it is a losing game and should be sold off to Microsoft–has lost a key engineer in that arena to, uh-oh, Microsoft. Sean Suchter, the VP of Search Technology at Yahoo, was also deeply involved in Yahoo’s efforts to open up its search platform, initiatives the company has touted aggressively as a bright spot in its not-so-lustrous landscape. The departure Suchter–who came to Yahoo (YHOO) almost six years ago after it acquired Inktomi (the company that got Yahoo into the search business) in...

Know When to Can Your Financial Planner [How To]Former financial planner Nora Dunn knows that lots of folks are itching to do something after seeing their latest investment statements—maybe to the point of axing their advisor. Not a great idea, she writes, unless he or she is unresponsive, pushy, or, even worse, trying to sell you a fortune-telling service: If they call you wanting to make drastic changes based on what they think the market is going to do, run. What they should really be focused on is you, your goals, and a plan (and portfolio) that will weather the good times and the bad. Sure – small...

Tony Sachs: Moose Call: The Hard Luck Saga Of Yankees' Pitcher Mike Mussina — The Yankees may have been eliminated from the postseason, but there's still drama to be had on Sunday, when the Bombers' ace pitcher, Mike Mussina, tries for his 20th win of the season against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Mussina has been a solid, sometimes dominant pitcher for much of his 18-year career in the major leagues (the first ten with the Baltimore Orioles and since 2001 with the Yankees). He's won almost 270 games, has a degree in economics from Stanford University, and will retire from baseball with enough money to last a couple of lifetimes. So why...

Putting A 'Korset' On The Spread Of Computer Viruses: Invention Stays One Step Ahead Of Anti-virus SoftwareAnti-virus companies play a losing game. Casting their nets wide, they catch common, malicious viruses and worms, but it may take days before their software updates can prepare your computer for the next attack. By then it could be too late. And some insidious programs prove immune to anti-virus software, residing inside your computer for months or even years, collecting personal information and business secrets....

Why Play A Losing Game? Study Uncovers Why Low-income People Buy Lottery TicketsAlthough state lotteries, on average, return just 53 cents for every dollar spent on a ticket, people continue to pour money into them -- especially low-income people, who spend a greater percentage of their incomes on lottery tickets than the wealthier segments of society. A new study points to income as an influential factor in the decision to invest in a product that provides poor returns....
