Audioholics puts Mitsubishi's LT-46149 LCD with iSP to the testFiled under: Displays, Mitsubishi, LCD If you're dead set on getting all your video and audio delivered from a single device, you could do worse than Mitsubishi's LT-46149 LCD and its iSP (Integrated Sound Projector) -- at least judging by the Audioholics review of the unit. The 16 beaming speakers across the bottom of the bezel proved more than just a toy and actually could be dialed in to create a real soundfield, albeit lacking in ultimate SPL output and bass. The lack of discrete input codes wasn't really solved by the automatic input selection and the backlighting could have...

US Tests New Missile Defensepumpkinpuss writes "The US military yesterday shot down a missile in a test simulating a long-range ballistic missile attack by a potential adversary such as North Korea or Iran. The target missile was launched from Kodiak Island, Alaska, at 3:04 PM Eastern time, tracked simultaneously by several ground and ship-based radars, and intercepted by a 'kill vehicle' 3,000 kilometers away over the Pacific 25 minutes later, according to the Missile Defense Agency. Lt. Gen. Patrick O'Reilly said, 'The kill vehicle was sent to a very accurate spot in space giving us great confidence.'" Reader gilgsn points out the testing of...

Why not download Jalbum to do the work for you? Skins are plugins to the Jalbum software that shape the look and feel of your Jalbum. Take Back the (Google) Streets: Firmware 2.2 Upgraders Undo the Wrong Thingimage from Gizmodo That great wail of anguish you may have heard recently was from iPod Touch users who upgraded their firmware to version 2.2 -- and suddenly discovered the Google Maps app no longer updated Street View. But don't cry too hard -- just follow these simple steps (provided by iPod Touch Fans site member "timmyj9") to correct that:1. get this file via ssh: /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/N45AP.plist 2. convert to xml at http://iappcat.com/plist/bin2xml 3. add <key>telephony</key> <dict> <key>maximumGeneration</key> <real>2.5</real> </dict> underneath <key>standAloneContacts</key> <true/>4. save then using that website again reconvert to binary 5. rename original file N45AP.old 6. copy new N45AP.plist in...

How to (not) Play Guitar with Guitar Hero World Tour Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed Now that I’ve become a master at singing and drumming on Guitar Hero World Tour, I decided I was ready to play the guitar. How hard can it be? It’s already obvious that I’m going to be giving up my day job in favor of touring with Nickelback. I chose to play along with the same Kurt Cobain song. However, I must not have been doing something else right. It was recording strokes, but it wasn’t showing any hits. The guitar has to be defective!...

Congratulations to Joi and Mizuka Ito (and a lovely video). <3 — Just Married. Joi blogs: Mizuka and I just got married. We went to the Inbamura town hall, filed our papers and visited the local Shinto shrine, Munakata Shrine. It's the second marriage for both of us so we decided to keep it pretty minimal. The only non-minimal thing was setting up and taking shots of ourselves... Previously: Joi Ito's Freesouls: a book of CC-licensed portraits of, and ... A couple of recent reports worth your attention.Laura Fitton (@pistachio) has an extensive (free) report on enterprise level micro sharing applications. You can download a copy or read it online here.  In the report she compares 19 applications based on different criteria into a succinct consumer reports like analysis. She looks at survey results, independent web research, verification of new features and analysis of how the 19 applications relate to one another and the marketplace. She has also compiled an excellent enterprise reading list on micro-sharing.Sarah Milstein was kind enough to send me a report called "Twitter and the Micro-Messaging...

BlackBerry Storm shows us where it was born, we meet its maker What happens when the assembly team up in Waterloo forgets to delete some test pictures on a BlackBerry Storm? Well, usually that person who bought the phone will notice the left-behind photosnap and send it into BGR! If anyone remembers the cute Asian chick in the iPhone factory fiasco, this is basically the same drill. We’re told that this picture was left on a production BlackBerry Storm purchased from Verizon. While it doesn’t expose too much, it gives us a nice little view into how these puppies are tested, boxed, and shipped. Ya’ box ‘em, and then ya’ ship...

CodeSOD: The Sky's the Limit! This code was sent to John W. by the support staff of one of the larger software vendors with the stated purpose of determining how much memory a program could use on one of the corporation's Unix servers.  #include <stdio.h> #include <malloc.h> int main () { float f; char *p; while (1) { p = malloc(102400); if (!p) { printf ("malloc returned NULL\n"); exit(1); } f += 102400; printf ("%g\n", f); printf ("%g %f %f MB\n", f, f, f/1024000); } } Now, fair readers, if you were to compile and run this code you your PC, as I did, you...

Can I Get a Summary of this Video, Please? Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed I know, I can be a bit wordy at times. I have a habit of stretching a one minute video into a ten minute one. I’m a talker, duh! I also enjoy writing, and sometimes I keep writing and just can’t stop. I don’t have time to read everything, though. I just need a summary sometimes. What do I do when I have something really long to read, and just don’t have time? Thankfully, I can head on over to GreatSummary. Quickly get the gist...

Are You Using LED Christmas Lights this Holiday Season? Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed I’ve had this particular light string on for the past three days. Each of the bulbs is still cool to the touch. It’s also highly energy efficient! If you’re going to string lights inside or outside your house, this is what you need to use. The reason why is that these are LED Christmas lights. The cost isn’t as bad as you might think, either. You can find just about any color/shape/size of LED holiday lights over at Holiday LEDs. A lot of conversations having been going on since the email announcing that Pownce had been acquired by Six Apart. Of course the real news wasn’t the purchase so much but that the Pownce service was going to be shutdown in two weeks. As irritating as it might seem to have services that users invest time in building up get sold off that is part of the so-called social media user generated content world. It’s all part of the game we play. Someone gets a cutesy idea for some service and slaps the code together after which we come...

<img src=”http://www.mobilecrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/smack-300×165.jpg” alt=”" title=”smack” width=”300″ height=”165″ class=”alignright size-medium wp-image-5967″ /> Of all the complex and expensive toys that have become standard objects in our lives, mobile handsets probably get the worst treatment. Think about it: they’re the result of many hours of engineering and design and cost hundreds of dollars to obtain, yet within days of purchase they’re generally being smashed into coin-filled pockets or carelessly tossed into cupholders. How do they last a week, much less the years we expect of them? To help answer that question, Nokia invited us down to their San Diego Test Center to check...
