Mac users have long boasted their operating system's superiority to Windows by citing its supposed immunity to viruses, but tech news site Ars Technica reports that Apple has begun recommending "the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities" on their hardware. Apple has been happy to have been depicted as the OS that's not susceptible to viruses, and as the article from Ars suggests, Apple may just be covering their bases with this one, but it still brings up an interesting question: Do You Use Run Antivirus on Your Mac? ( surveys) Let's hear your thoughts on the matter—including whether or...
Straight out of the Netbook World Summit in Paris (unfortunately, we couldn’t attend), is an announcement of a new operating system. GOS the maker of the Linux OS on the Cloudbook, is debuting Cloud, a new open-source operating system that boots into a browser with Google, Yahoo and Windows Live within seconds. However, like Splashtop the OS can also be a pre-boot environment and users can optionally boot into a full Windows or Linux OS. From the screenshots (see a better picture below), gOS Cloud features an full browser with a Mac OS like dock with shortcuts to favorite apps,...
There have been several attempts at USB jewelry, well now here is one more. This little black rose may not be anything to gush about, but it does give hope that better things could be created. It’s not horrible, now they’ve at least found something that 60 year old secretaries will wear that enjoy lots of jewelry. It is still of course a bit chunky, so if you prefer dainty pendants it’s going to be harder to find any USB jewelry that will ever fit what you want. Of course they just couldn’t resist adding tiny crystals to the...
The brand loyalty that Apple enjoys is not the same as lack of competition, a California judge decided in throwing out Mac-clone maker Psystar’s countersuit against Apple. Apple originally sued Psystar in July for making computers that ran its OS X operating system without permission. Psystar came back a month later with a countersuit saying that Apple was engaging in antitrust practices by limiting its operating system to its computers. In some sense, it looks like Apple’s lawyers won a legal jargon battle. The definition of a “market” was central to Psystar’s argument and the judge felt that was more...
Filed under: Software Update, Apple If you're a regular visitor to the Apple support downloads website, then you might have noticed a change last night. In addition to releasing two updates, Apple also redesigned the site. If you've used the update website before, then you know what a challenge it was to find any useful information. Before, Apple just showed a list of updates (with the newest ones at the top); now you are able to browse by specific product. By clicking a product link at the top, you can see updates for iPhone, iPod, Desktop Computers, Portable Computers, Mac...
Filed under: Gaming, iPhone, App StoreBack when the Macintosh meant a machine with a built-in black & white screen, there were some extremely popular games -- but for the generation that remembers the introduction of the Mac II's color display, the unmistakable gameplay of Crystal Quest is sure to spark a deep sense of joy. Collecting those crystals and escaping through the hyperspace hatch caused your Mac to emit a sigh of... well, relief would be the polite way to put it (I'm trying to find a sample of the audio to link). Xbox 360 owners have had a Crystal...
The OSx86 hacking scene, which involves installing the Mac OS onto generic PCs instead of those shiny Apple boxes, is characterized by the troubles of marrying hardware to software. In short, OS X just doesn't have drivers for many of the internal parts such as Wi-Fi cards and, almost as important, sound hardware. In fact, getting sound in and out of a netbook Hackintosh has proved to be a big challenge. At least with Wi-Fi you can always just swap out the card for an Airport-compatible one. Enterprising hackers also helped us to get the headphone jack working on...

A study commissioned by Professor Semir Zeki of University College London sought to explore the difference between love and hate in the human mind. It found, oddly enough, that hate tends to be more rational than love. What does this all have to do with gadgets? It just might explain why you commenters fight incessantly about Apple and Microsoft. The study is a little small for my liking, at only 17 people, and the results seem a bit anecdotal, but they do make sense. Imagine trying to explain why you like somebody: you're bound to use vague words. "Oh, she's...
