New World of Warcraft expansion sold 2.8 million in 24 hoursI guess they should rename the company Blizzard Activision. In any case, Activision Blizzard scored big time with the launch of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. Published by Activision Blizzard’s Blizzard Entertainment division, the online game expansion for WoW players sold 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours. That’s a big chunk of WoW’s 11 million subscribers, which suggests an unusually high enthusiasm for the game, nicknamed “Warcrack” because of its addictiveness. Activision Blizzard said this makes the expansion pack the fastest-selling PC game in history. The previous record was set in January 2007, when Blizzard...

Gartner: open source software 'pervasive'Here, there, not everywhere It is a wise manager that does not make decisions based on the survey data put together by the major IT market researchers. But sometimes a skinny bit of survey data is all you have to start with, and that data is better than no data at all - particularly if you're trying to make a case to upper management either for or against the deployment of a specific bit of hardware or software.…...

Bad news gets worse for ITThe financial news for IT just keeps getting worse, with bellwethers like Intel cutting revenue guidance, shares of high-flyers like Google sinking to multiyear low, Sun slashing up to 18 percent of its workforce, and market researchers at IDC and Citigroup slashing forecasts. The conventional wisdom up until now has been that since corporate IT budgets were slashed and stayed lean after the dot-com bust, there isn't much left to cut. Therefore, the thinking goes, the tech sector will suffer a slowdown but not an actual decline. However, market watchers are starting to seriously hedge their bets, revising their official expectations and...

IDC slashes 2009 global IT projectionsThe US is a drag, man Blame the financial meltdown. And blame the United States. The market researchers at IDC this morning put out revised projections for global IT spending in 2009, and they now say that global IT spending in 2009 will grow at only 2.6 per cent. That's down from an earlier projection of 5.9 per cent growth in year-over-year spending, a projection that came out in August, when the economies of the world were jittery and skittish, not heading towards recession.…...

Licensed P2P to Rise, But Piracy Will DominateDespite numerous examples of legitimate uses, most people still associate P2P with illegal file-sharing. That perception might be due for a change, according to a new report from research firm MultiMedia Intelligence. It predicts that licensed P2P transfers will grow 10 times faster than P2P piracy over the next five years. Granted, forecasts like these should always be taken with a grain of salt, especially since at least part of the online video space appears to be moving away from P2P right now, with Joost a prominent example of abandoning peer-supported streaming for traditional Flash streams. And one shouldn’t disregard...

Is Microsoft Making it Easy to Skip Vista? In one of the most anti-climactic announcements we can recall, Microsoft this week revealed that the official name of the operating system code-named Windows 7 is…Windows 7. Apparently Microsoft decided to spend its creativity trying to decide how to position the new OS, which is probably a good thing considering the size of that challenge. Do you need Vista or can you move straight to 7? The current version of Windows, Vista, hasn’t exactly taken the world by storm. It’s gaining market share because it comes installed on the vast majority of PCs sold to consumers. But businesses aren’t buying...

Disney's rights to young Mickey Mouse may be wrongFilm credits from the 1920s reveal imprecision in copyright claims that some experts say could invalidate Disney's long-held copyright. He is the world's most famous personality, better known in this country than anyone living or dead, real or fictional. Market researchers say his 97% recognition rate in the U.S. edges out even Santa Claus....

Oops: Online Video Ad Market Won't Be as Big as ExpectedWe all make mistakes. EMarketer cut its projections for online video advertising spending by nearly two-thirds -- from $1.4 billion to $505 million -- after the market researchers changed their methodology (which was somehow tied to historical data from the Internet Advertising Brueau). "While this year's online video ad projection is quite a drop from the one eMarketer put out in February 2008 . . . it is important to note the lowered estimate still represents an increase of 55.9 percent over 2007 spending," said the company, in an official statement. Although $505 million isn't chopped liver, it still represents...

Fuel Cell Powered Laptop is Here, Almost We’ve been waiting around for awhile for a laptop that uses methanol fuel cells. Finally, PolyFuel has finished up a working prototype for a fuel cell-powered laptop, the Lenovo T40 ThinkPad. The laptop runs on direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), and each methanol cartridge provides power for about 10 hours of use. There are some great features to this, and some not so great features. First off, the battery prototype is quite a bit lighter than the OEM battery the Lenovo uses, which is great, but it is larger, which is not so great. It offers three times the...
