Alcatel-Lucent: Let’s Get Small [Digital Daily]Alcatel-Lucent, the world’s largest maker of telecommunications equipment, won’t be quite so large come 2009. This morning the struggling Franco-American network supplier said it plans to sack 1,000 managers and 5,000 contractors in a bid to bring down costs. “The new management team is committed to rapidly executing this new strategy and leveraging the new streamlined organization,” CEO Ben Verwaayen said in a statement. We are focused on delivering results and restoring profitability.” This latest swing of the ax brings total job cuts at Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) to about 22,500 since the 2006 merger that created it. And though the company...

SAP: Pacific Crest Cuts Ests; Sees Layoffs AheadPacific Crest’s Brendan Barnicle this morning trimmed his earnings estimates on SAP (SAP), asserting that after a solid start to the fourth quarter, “checks have weakened.” He says that his contacts “are increasingly cautious about SAP’s ability to meet estimates.” Barnicle cuts his Q4 estimates to revenue of 3.5 billion Euros and EPS of 70 Euro cents a share, down from 3.63 billion Euros and 75 Euro cents. For 2009, he goes to 12.3 billion Euros and 1.98 a share, from 12.76 billion and 2.05. He says license revenue in 2009 is likely to decline from 2008. Barnicle also contends...

Cable Companies Figuring Out Their Wireless Strategies: Add Value To The Core Offering — While the cable companies have long had trouble coming up with a good wireless strategy (including numerous false starts) it looks like some may be figuring this out, in setting up business models where the wireless acts as a free value-add that keeps customers tied to their core, profitable businesses. For example, the article discusses Cablevision: As such, Moffett likes Cablevision's WiFi strategy because it serves as a value-added service for its customers, and it's cheap to roll out. Moreover, Cablevision is pitted against Verizon in New York, and Verizon can't match the free WiFi offering. "Their model is to...

The impossibility of rational debateI didn’t get a chance to write about this when it first hit my inbox, but I just can’t resist saying something about the ridiculous “study” that a consulting firm called Precursor did of the bandwidth that Google supposedly uses but doesn’t pay for. The headline on the email I got — which I assume was sent to tens of thousands of others as well — was sensational and gripping, in the same way that supermarket tabloid headlines are often sensational and gripping (”Elvis clone lands on the moon!”). The email trumpeted the fact that “Google uses 21 times the...

Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending November 30th, 2008Filed under: Blu-ray After Home Media Magazine took a week off from analyzing the Nielsen VideoScan numbers -- probably due to the short week -- Blu-ray manages to finally do in the last week of November what it did during every week in October: gain double digit market share of the top 20 titles. This was mostly due to Hancock which managed over 14 percent of the market from its standard-def brother. The other big help was from old favorites like Transformers and the latest Indiana movie. In fact the only other new release this week that managed to make the...

Opera 10 Alpha: Yeah, It’s Even Faster Than BeforeI’ve been following Opera’s new releases quite closely, and whether it’s one of the mobile versions of the browser or the desktop Opera, one cannot say they aren’t active. The numbers, unfortunately, just aren’t on their side: regardless of having a great feature set and being very fast, the desktop version of Opera just isn’t gaining significant traction. Opera’s next big release, Opera 10, raises expectation merely by its round version number, and now there’s an alpha version for everyone to try out. The new Presto 2.2 engine should bring speedier browsing, and even better adherence to W3C standards. Furthermore,...

Apple loses it, suggests puppetmaster behind Psystar Oh dear, I think Apple’s legal department is getting paranoid. After suggesting that people taking their ad literally were irrational, they’re now suggesting that a shadowy unknown may be behind the whole Psystar drama. The suits and countersuits have been going on for months and months now (all I care about is that it works), and in an amendment to their suit today, Apple added the following language: On information and belief, persons other than Psystar are involved in Psystar’s unlawful and improper activities described in this Amended Complaint. The true names or capacities, whether individual, corporate, or otherwise,...

Brand Makeovers: 3 Lessons in ReinventionTarget, Apple and Jack in the Box reinvented their brands through damage control, brand differentiation and broadening appeal. Put their strategies to use for your business.   Brands are like beauty queens: Even the most illustrious need makeovers from time to time. Big names overhaul their brands to boost sales by getting back in touch with their original identity, or forging a new and improved one. Not so long ago, Target competed directly with other discount big-box stores. Today, it has a distinct image, affluent customers and powerful market share. Apple was once pigeonholed as appealing to only artists and designers–now the...

DOJ Hound Wanted To Sink Teeth Into GOOG, YHOO DealLooks like Jerry Yang and the rest of the Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) gang weren't the only ones sad to see the search outsourcing deal with Google (NSDQ: GOOG) die. Sanford Litvack, a lawyer the Department of Justice hired specifically to examine the deal, was hungry for the chance to take the two giants on in court. "Of course I was looking forward to it. We felt pretty good about it, we felt pretty confident," Litvack said, in an interview with The Am Law Daily. He revealed that the companies abandoned the pact just three hours before the DOJ was set...

Financial Times staff invited to cut working weekThe Financial Times is offering staff the opportunity to work a three-day week as part of cost-cutting measures designed to avoid the need for job cuts. John Ridding, the Financial Times chief executive, informed staff yesterday that the cost-cutting measures were being put in place as a result of a worsening global economic conditions in an internal email, seen by MediaGuardian.co.uk.Among the measures being introduced at the FT is an invitation to staff to make a voluntary reduction in the number of days they work, down to three or four a week if individual departments could accommodate those changes.Other cost-cutting...

Dear Microsoft: Bribing Users Faster Still Probably Won't Help Much — We noted last month that Microsoft was stepping up its program to bribe users to use its search engine, and that process continues with the announcement that Microsoft is adjusting the program to provide the cashback award immediately, rather than making users wait for it. Yet, as PC World notes, this whole effort to bribe users has done nothing to improve Microsoft's marketshare in search. In fact, its marketshare has decreased, as both Yahoo's and Google's marketshare has increased. Perhaps it's time to try a different strategy.Permalink | Comments | Email This Story...
