There's been a lot of talk recently that search and other forms of "performance" or "direct" online marketing will continue to grow in the downturn while display and other forms of "brand" marketing will struggle. I think that's likely to be true at some level but it doesn't mean that display advertising doesn't work. In fact, a recent comScore white paper that was presented last week at the Empirical Generalizations In Advertising Conference at the Wharton School is very enlightening. You can get a copy of the white paper by asking for it here. comScore operates a panel of over...
There are right and wrong ways to market yourself as an athlete. To become a successful brand you have to do any number of thousands of different things to reach a level that leads to marketing and off court/field success. On the flipside, all it takes is one mistake to bring it all crashing down. I have noticed a trend that is creeping through the NBA that truly disturbs me. It disturbs me because its the equivalent of burning 100 dollar bills. That is how debilitating to any hopes a player may have of making money through endorsements. In the...
Jean-Baptiste Jung also known as the guy behind the site CatsWhoCode.com and a great member of the WordPress community has shared his success story on how he launched his relatively new site, WPRecipes.com. I know that Performancing readers are always interested in learning new techniques or ideas when it comes to promotion or marketing so be sure to read his post and jot down some ideas. One thing in particular worth pointing out is that, Jean proves my point in that asking to exchange links with someone doesn't work as I've explained before. When reading his success story, notice...
Personalized recommendations have always been one of those technologies that look great on paper, but hardly ever work quite as well as advertised. This week, we got a chance to test my6sense, which takes your feed subscriptions and then recommends interesting posts based on your own reading habits. My6sense's current focus is on providing a good mobile experience, though the company will soon also launch its service on the web as well. While it did take a bit of training before the application fully recognized our preferences and before it returned really good results, the overall results were very impressive....
NY-based wine resource Snooth has announced several updates to their service geared towards wine merchants. Snooth has launched a set of analytics tools for retailers and wineries where they can view detailed data on where users who are looking for their products are located. This data can help the merchants spend their marketing dollars more wisely. There are also pricing comparison reports which help merchants view the differences in price between online and local merchants. Snooth has also launched group pages as part of a merchant platform which allows winemakers to "claim" their wines. The group pages are basically individual profile...
Just as we're coming to grips with the entire netbook phenomenon, low end manufacturer Coby comes up with something even lamer. "[Midget PCs] are smaller than a netbook but not THAT small." Midget PCs. Lovely. What's makes a midget PC different than a netbook? If you listen to Coby's marketing director, they're a whole new category of computer meant for leaner times. As far as I can tell though, the PoqetMate-7 and PoqetMate-9 are just netbooks, albeit extremely cheap ones. Coby hasn't offered many specs to ponder, but the models, primarily differentiated by screen size (7in and 9in) will run...
Filed under: Accessories Look, we know haphazardly stapling an iPod dock onto nearly any product can cause almost-paralyzing fits of hyperbole amongst marketing personnel, but Scosche's description of its sad little reviveLITE nightlight charger as "cordless" because it plugs directly into the wall might take the cake. Oh, wait -- you know what actually takes the cake? It's priced at a delightfully insulting $40. Yeah, we'll stick with the monster under the bed, guys. At least it respects us.Scosche vomits out reviveLITE "cordless" iPhone charger / nightlight combo originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 23:34:00 EST....
