Display Advertising Works, But It Works Differently Than SearchThere's been a lot of talk recently that search and other forms of "performance" or "direct" online marketing will continue to grow in the downturn while display and other forms of "brand" marketing will struggle. I think that's likely to be true at some level but it doesn't mean that display advertising doesn't work. In fact, a recent comScore white paper that was presented last week at the Empirical Generalizations In Advertising Conference at the Wharton School is very enlightening. You can get a copy of the white paper by asking for it here. comScore operates a panel of over...

My Marketing Advice to Professional AthletesThere are right and wrong ways to market yourself as an athlete. To become a successful brand you have to do any number of thousands of different things to reach a level that leads to marketing and off court/field success. On the flipside, all it takes is one mistake to bring it all crashing down. I have noticed a trend that is creeping through the NBA that truly disturbs me. It disturbs me because its the equivalent of burning 100 dollar bills. That is how debilitating to any hopes a player may have of making money through endorsements. In the...

Five Web Apps that Deserved More Attention in 2008Even though 2008 isn’t exactly ending on a high note, we have definitely seen our fair share of interesting new web apps and online services this year. Some of those, however, never quite caught on, even though they are really interesting and cool. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why these things happen – could be because of the day they launched (or even the time of day they launched); could be that people didn’t quite get the purpose of the app (yep – lots of bad marketing around); or maybe I’m just an idiot for liking these services… Here are...

App Store Developers Debate Pricing and MarketingWhile the iTunes App Store has been a huge success in terms of iPhone app distribution, there have been lingering complaints that the current structure encourages a "race to the bottom" with massive competition dropping the price of apps towards $0.9......

5 Years After CAN-SPAMAre we better off for having the CAN-SPAM law in effect? At best, marginally so. But no law could have stopped the real spam problem that inundates us today and promises to get ever-worse. - The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 (Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act) was controversial from the start. I think it's fair to say that nobody thought it would solve the spam problem, but many (such as this guy) thought it could help. Has it solved the spam problem? No, o......

Great Example On How To Launch A Site Jean-Baptiste Jung also known as the guy behind the site CatsWhoCode.com and a great member of the WordPress community has shared his success story on how he launched his relatively new site, WPRecipes.com. I know that Performancing readers are always interested in learning new techniques or ideas when it comes to promotion or marketing so be sure to read his post and jot down some ideas. One thing in particular worth pointing out is that, Jean proves my point in that asking to exchange links with someone doesn't work as I've explained before. When reading his success story, notice...

Personalized recommendations have always been one of those technologies that look great on paper, but hardly ever work quite as well as advertised. This week, we got a chance to test my6sense, which takes your feed subscriptions and then recommends interesting posts based on your own reading habits. My6sense's current focus is on providing a good mobile experience, though the company will soon also launch its service on the web as well. While it did take a bit of training before the application fully recognized our preferences and before it returned really good results, the overall results were very impressive....

BetamaxIn case you don't always go back and look at comments (and let's face it, it's not easy to track them), then have a look at Tony's comment from my post yesterday. It's good to see a bit of banter going on and that's what HDS could do with.HDS have hardly developed a good blogging prowess, it's more a case of "oh well, better do that" than taking a lead in new media. Look at EMC.There's geeky leaky Storagezilla with his uber-technical posts and sneaky advance notice of EMC technology.Next The Storage Anarchist with his ascerbic character and product assassinations...

Snooth Adds Wine Merchant Analytics and Group Pages NY-based wine resource Snooth has announced several updates to their service geared towards wine merchants. Snooth has launched a set of analytics tools for retailers and wineries where they can view detailed data on where users who are looking for their products are located. This data can help the merchants spend their marketing dollars more wisely. There are also pricing comparison reports which help merchants view the differences in price between online and local merchants. Snooth has also launched group pages as part of a merchant platform which allows winemakers to "claim" their wines. The group pages are basically individual profile...

Coby to Release $100 'Midget' Laptop to Sell in Rite-Aid, Kroger [NetBooks]Just as we're coming to grips with the entire netbook phenomenon, low end manufacturer Coby comes up with something even lamer. "[Midget PCs] are smaller than a netbook but not THAT small." Midget PCs. Lovely. What's makes a midget PC different than a netbook? If you listen to Coby's marketing director, they're a whole new category of computer meant for leaner times. As far as I can tell though, the PoqetMate-7 and PoqetMate-9 are just netbooks, albeit extremely cheap ones. Coby hasn't offered many specs to ponder, but the models, primarily differentiated by screen size (7in and 9in) will run...

Web Marketing That Hopes to Learn What Attracts a Click [Voices]By Stephanie Clifford, Staff Writer, The New York Times Online advertisers are not lacking in choices: They can display their ads in any color, on any site, with any message, to any audience, with any image. Now, a new breed of companies is trying to tackle all of those options and determine what ad works for a specific audience. They are creating hundreds of versions of clients’ online ads, changing elements like color, type font, message, and image to see what combination draws clicks on a particular site or from a specific audience. Scosche vomits out reviveLITE "cordless" iPhone charger / nightlight comboFiled under: Accessories Look, we know haphazardly stapling an iPod dock onto nearly any product can cause almost-paralyzing fits of hyperbole amongst marketing personnel, but Scosche's description of its sad little reviveLITE nightlight charger as "cordless" because it plugs directly into the wall might take the cake. Oh, wait -- you know what actually takes the cake? It's priced at a delightfully insulting $40. Yeah, we'll stick with the monster under the bed, guys. At least it respects us.Scosche vomits out reviveLITE "cordless" iPhone charger / nightlight combo originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 23:34:00 EST....
