Sammo Hung Will Fight Specially-Trained Army of Monkeys Sammo Hung, the veteran Hong Kong action star you all know from the '90s Rush Hour-style CBS cop series Martial Law (alongside Arsenio Hall!), is in talks to star in Dark Horse Films' War Monkeys. From THR: Sammo Hung is negotiations to star in "War Monkeys," a horror comedy shaping up to be the biggest feature yet from the independent arm of Dark Horse Films. UTA-repped Kevin Munroe ("TMNT") is in negotiations to direct the film for Dark Horse Indie. James Block: Give Unto Batman That Which is Batman's — As the nation prepares to close out the final chapter of the Bush 43 administration, it might be informative to reconsider the pinnacle of the era's popular culture. Sometimes even a box office smash can tell us things we don't want to hear. In The Dark Knight, which is really about the dark night, Batman's butler informs us, "The night is always darkest just before the dawn." The problem with this insight, metaphorically speaking, is we can't grasp when the descent into darkness is over until dawn comes. Surely, there must be a better indicator. To find one, we must...

Recently I was finally able to wrap my brain around the main causes of the market fallout, but I was having a hard time understanding how it would play out with the people who were not involved in creating the problems (hard working middle class Americans, for instance). After reading this article, it hit me really hard how Anarchy and Martial Law could come into play: In many cases, its not the home owners with morgages (often companies) but people who pay their rent on time who are being evicted. This is because the banks are foreclosing on the property that their landlord's own. Bigger landlord companies that may have many properties are not so sympathetic & just want their money. This article kinda represents where the rubber meets the road in terms of community and law enforcement. - Andrew Baron

Could You Live in a World Without Women? [Triviagasm]With the Y: The Last Man film coming in 2010, we’ll soon get a big-screen treatment of Brian K. Vaughan’s world without men. All-female societies are not uncommon in science fiction, from culturally advanced utopias to post-apocalyptic sex comedies. Far less common are societies where men live, either by choice or circumstance, with few or no women. How do these societies come about? How do they perpetuate themselves without the opposite sex? And what happens to men when the women disappear from their lives? World Without Women by Day Keene and Leonard Pruyn (1960) How it happened: A mysterious illness...

In this YouTube clip, Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) says some congresspeople were told in private briefings that if they did not pass the bailout bill, circumstances would soon force the federal government to "impose martial law." (Thanks, Martha Clayton)...

If The Economy Gets Any Worse, The Government Is Coming For Your Cows [The Strawman]Finally, a post-apocalyptic movie where the bogeyman isn't a nuclear holocaust or plague — it's just the economy sucking really hard. In The Strawman, an eerily plausible financial ick-fest leads to martial law. And judging from this poster, it's not a good time to be a cow either. The best part about The Strawman is there is little to no information on it besides this amazing poster. The actual itty bitty synopsis is that after an economic meltdown, the government declares martial law and ENSLAVES all the people, which sounds eerily plausible these days. Of course, a small group of...

I am so sick of hearing people whining about how we're under "martial law" or we're living in a "police state." If either of those were really true, the people making such claims would already be in prison or dead. THAT's what happens in a police state. - Joey Gibson
Sorry to disagree Joey, but the start begins in emotional requests to put the country before the individual then slowly removing select individuals who do not play along with the nation's agenda. - LPH

Vivian Norris de Montaigu: An Expat's View of the Conventions: End of Summer in America and Back "Home" to Europe — Two weeks of bliss, sunsets that never end, farmers' markets, vineyards, children playing in the waves, the Democratic convention speeches on tv, fresh seafood, friends, conversations on the beach...and the knowledge that we will return next summer. This sums up my late August vacation on the East Coast of the US. It was, simply put, one of my best, most relaxing vacations ever. Then, as I prepared to fly back to Europe, hurricane Gustav loomed and I worried for friends and family in the South...and the Republican convention began. That last week of vacation we made a point to watch...
