Like me, the Wi-Fi Alliance is based in Austin, so I asked them if they wouldn’t mind setting up a home tour that would allow me to see the future of Wi-Fi in action. In the segment below, I sit down with Kelly Davis-Felner, marketing director of the Wi-Fi Alliance, whose home I visited to talk about Wi-Fi on handsets as well as the future of Wi-Fi peering, which would create device networks independent of the Internet. Davis-Felner says the Alliance has certified 249 mobile handsets since 2003, 106 of them this year alone. She expects Wi-Fi on handsets to...
So far, Kyte has been focusing on getting mobile content (videos shot on a cell phone) onto the Web. For each publisher of mobile video, many of them rock stars and rappers, Kyte creates a branded video player they can put on their Websites. Now, with more media consumption happening right on many mobile handsets, Kyte is going the other way around and letting bands and brands turn their Kyte player into a mobile Website complete with banner advertising, chat, fan comments, ratings, and sharing features. You can see some examples here (best viewed on a mobile phone), including...
The "world's most popular mobile Web browser" hits a new beta milestone today and no, we're not talking about Safari on the iPhone. It's Opera Mini and version 4.2 of the browser for mobile handsets with some new, advanced features. Personalized skins went away from version 3, but they're back with 4.2 so you can pretty up your browser. The company added a new Opera Mini server farm in the U.S. and claims browsing performance will be increased for users in the U.S. and Asia-Pacific region. Load reductions on other servers should result in better performance in other areas...
With the release of Google Chrome and the continued popularity of Mozilla Firefox, the browser wars are seeing a bit of a renaissance. But as interesting as the renewed battle for the desktop may be, it's important to remember that a similar battle for browser dominance - one that may affect even more people - is taking place on mobile handsets the world over. Last month, we saw more news of the yet-to-be-released Firefox Mobile broswer - code named "Fennec" - surface with the release of Windows Mobile screenshots. Not to be outdone, Opera - the current mobile browser leader...
Mobile phone giant Nokia , in association with UC Berkeley , has launched Mobile Millennium, a public pilot that will collect and study traffic data received from GPS-enabled mobile devices, such as the Nokia N96, Nokia N95 & Nokia E71. The aggregated data is then encrypted & sent to a computer system, which blends it with other sources of traffic data and broadcasts this real‐time, data‐rich information back to the phones and to the internet through a user friendly interface. The Mobile Millennium team expects to have 10,000 participants by April . “The whole concept here is that if everyone...

Filed under: Cellphones It's tough to predict the future, especially with cutbacks to R&D budgets in the face of a global economic slowdown. Still, it's always nice to see a forward-looking corporate-slide related to mobile handsets from the taller, blonder half of that Sony Ericsson partnership. LTE and fast CPUs are certainly no surprise, nor is that 1,024 x 768 XGA screen resolution that Japan's superphones are already bumping up against. The most compelling vision is that of the embedded camera sensors: 12-20 megapixels capable of recording Full HD video by 2012. Adding more fuel to firey speculation that handsets...
