Clearwire CEO: Not Married To WiMax If Rival Format Takes Off (CLWRD)Clearwire (CLWRD), which recently closed a $14.5 billion merger/funding deal with Sprint Nextel (S), Intel (INTC), Comcast (CMCSA), Google (GOOG), and others, is betting on a next-generation, '4G' wireless technology called WiMax for high-speed mobile Internet service. But its competitors, including much larger rivals AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ), and smaller rival T-Mobile (DT) are betting on a competing technology called LTE. WiMax already exists today, whereas LTE won't make it to market until late 2009 or 2010. But what happens if WiMax doesn't take off -- and LTE does? Clearwire could end up offering LTE service someday, CEO Ben...

Another Hurdle For A Nextel Buyer: Competing With Sprint For Walkie-Talkie Subscribers (S)Sprint Nextel (S) has been thinking about unloading its underperforming Nextel walkie-talkie business for months, after writing down most of its $35 billion purchase price. And according to the WSJ's Amol Sharma, they've gotten multiple bites: Latin American carrier NII Holdings (NIHD), which operates similar networks, and several private-equity firms. But any deal to buy Nextel with Sprint comes with several hurdles, which Sharma details: Sprint has spent the last several years working Nextel's back-end systems like billing and customer service into its own. So some major surgery would be required to separate the services. Sprint might not be able...

Chrysler Prices Mobile Internet Service At $499 One-Time, $29 Per Month [Gadgets]Chrysler's mobile internet system, UConnect, has finally gotten official pricing, and unless you're the crackberry type with a serious addiction, the $499 initial fee and $29 monthly fee probably sounds pretty steep. The system was developed by Autonet, a company which installs something similar — and portable — in Avis rent-a-wrecks. The initial professional installation costs between $35 and $50, and, combined with the one-time and ongoing fees, this is looking like a worse deal than going Comcastic. [MotorAuthority]...

Sprint's SK Telecom Talks: Partnership, No Merger (S)Reuters sources vehemently denied yesterday that Sprint Nextel, the troubled no. 3 wireless carrier, is in talks to sell itself to Korean wireless giant SK Telecom. But Sprint (S) and SK Telecom (SKM) are talking. What about? A "strategic partnership to develop new handsets and services," according to the WSJ. What's the point? Korean cellphones and mobile Internet services are more sophisticated than ours, so in theory, SK could help Sprint tailor cooler phones and more useful Internet services. The payoff: In theory, Sprint could finally start attracting wireless customers away from other carriers -- instead of the other way...
