China's Chang'e 1 Probe Beams Back Completed Map of The Moon [Moon Map] With help from its moon photographing probe, the Chang'e 1, China's created the country's first full map of the lunar surface and they're calling it the best one yet. According to the heads of the space program, the map is the most complete image of the moon's surface, as well as the richest in detail, in the world. The Chang'e 1 was launched in October 2007 and relayed back the first pictures of the moon roughly this time last year. The satellite marks the first moon mission the country's ever undertaken. Now that it's completed its mission, China will...

Chandrayaan Enters Lunar OrbitWilliam Robinson writes "After an 18-day journey, Chandrayaan-1, the moon mission of India, has entered Lunar orbit. The maneuver was described as crucial and critical by scientists, who pointed out that at least 30 per cent of similar moon missions had failed at this juncture, resulting in spacecraft lost to outer space. The lunar orbit insertion placed Chandrayaan-1 in an elliptical orbit with its nearest point 400 to 500 kilometers away from the moon, and the farthest, 7,500 kilometers. By November 15, the spacecraft is expected to be orbiting the moon at a distance of 100 kilometers and sending back...

Video: India launches its first moon mission Some good ol’ fashioned science news for you this dreary morning. Congrats are due to India, which launched its first moon mission a few hours ago. It’s an unmanned flight, so don’t expect to see video of Indian astronauts playing golf or cricket up there or anything. There will, however, be an Indian flag placed up there by the unmanned rover-dealie. The Chandrayaan-1 (literally, lunar-craft 1), which launched from the country’s southeast, will be tooling about for two years, primarily modeling the surface of the moon. Maybe India can sell the data to Google, giving us Google Moon? There’s...

How to install the Android SDK on UbuntuWhy oh why didn't I install Ubuntu 8.04 on my MSI Wind instead of OS X? If I had, I could have followed these lengthy, but reasonably simple, instructions to install the Android SDK on Ubuntu! Actually I see that the Android SDK can be installed on OS X 10.4.8 and up or Windows XP / Vista so once I find the time, I can still play. And I do mean play since the Android folks have the sample code for Lunar Lander on the Android platform. This is really for programming types and the morbidly curious because it's essentially...

Indian Moon Mission To Launch Next MonthAnil Kandangath writes with word that the Indian moon mission plans (mentioned earlier on Slashdot) are about to be put to the test. "While the spacecraft itself will not land on the Moon, it will act as an orbiter and land a rover on the surface. The spacecraft is being launched next month sometime between October 22 and October 26. The spacecraft payload includes 11 payloads (including one from NASA) and will perform remote sensing and studies of the lunar surface. The mission is estimated to cost Rs 386 crore (~ 7.7 million USD)."Read more of this story at Slashdot....
