YouTube lets you turn videos into greeting cards On Friday YouTube unveiled a new feature for the holidays that lets users create hosted video cards to send to friends and family. Users can select this option from any YouTube video, or from a special page that houses selected community videos and links to a user's own clips. There's also an option to make a personalized greeting straight from a connected Web cam. When finished picking the video there are a handful of themes that house the video player, along with space to add up to 230 characters of text, both of which can be sent up to...

Magazines Come to Google Book SearchGoogle today announced that it is adding magazines to its lineup for Google Book Search. These magazines include publications like Popular Science and New York Magazine, but also more obscure publications like the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. In the long run, Google expects to add search results from these magazines to its main Google.com search results. It is not clear if Google struck a deal with specific publishers to allow for this, but the selection of included magazines still feels a bit uneven and leaves out quite a few well known publications like Time, Newsweek, and Wired. It’s The Link Economy Stupid The New York Times has rolled out a new feature that sees it linking out on its front page. Times Extra adds related links from across the web using BlogRunner, the blog meme tracking service the Times acquired last year. As much as any one would appreciate a link on the front page of NYTimes.com, the links are displayed using a js embed, so unfortunately would appear to be blind to search engines. Although linking out won’t fix the financial mess at the NY Times, it’s good to see them leading the way in linking out to other content,...

New Mac Mini conceptDesigner Sait Alanyali is a proud Mac Mini user. So proud that he designed his own. One of the problems he has with the current machine are the I/O ports. It’s a hassle to plug things in and take them out. Hence the “V” shape. It puts the ports within reach while keeping cables tidy. The shape also comes in handy by improving cooling as air moves freely through the heatsink. Hard drives are hot swappable with a 2.5″ hd installed and an empty slot to use any way you like. It also features an HDMI port and does away...

Can Social Media Really Be Monetized?Social sites like Facebook and MySpace have long struggled to effectively monetize the social networking space. The Internet's watering holes have tempted advertisers with an engaged and captive audience. But advertisers have seen minimal success with users who balk at unwelcomed and overt advertising tactics. An article over at Wired today asks Is Social Advertising an Oxymoron? One interactive marketing executive points out the problem with advertising on social media sites: "Who said this is media? Consumers weren't trying to generate media. They were trying to talk to somebody... We hijack their own conversations, their own thoughts and feelings, and...

Facebook Connect a privacy tool? Yeah Right!A good article by Brad Stone at the NY Times entitled “Facebook aimes to extend its reach across the web”. Brad talks about Facebook Connect: Facebook Connect, as the company’s new feature is called, allows its members to log onto other Web sites using their Facebook identification and see their friends’ activities on those sites. Like Beacon, the controversial advertising program that Facebook introduced and then withdrew last year after it raised a hullabaloo over privacy, Connect also gives members the opportunity to broadcast their actions on those sites to their friends on Facebook. This is beginning to sound like...

All day today, I was looking forward to two closely-related things: sitting down at home to watch an inexpensive movie with my wife, and then rolling out a post saying Apple had missed out on revenue from the Gray household, as a new expanded relationship with TiVo and Amazon Unbox had us renting two films from that service instead of iTunes. But after two hours of watching substandard video with jagged starts and stops and visual artifacts throughout the film, it just reinforced our decision to go with the brand that represents quality. Despite the fact we only paid $.99...
Amazon and TiVo Somehow Make 99 Cent Films Seem Too Expensive - Mike Fruchter
New Blog Post: Amazon and TiVo Somehow Make 99 Cent Films Seem Too Expensive http://tinyurl.com/tivoamazon99 - Louis Gray
I feel for you Louis... I have gotten a few of the Amazon rentals on my Tivo.. not impressed. They were so-so, but I have had skipping and artifact issues... the sad thing is, they aren't streaming, they are downloaded! Let's just be thankful Netflix is coming to Tivo this month :) Here's hoping for HD... but I doubt it. - Tim Hoeck
Hmm. We've rented from Amazon on our TiVo for almost a year now and have never seen problems with stuttering, skipping, or noteworthy artifacts. The rentals aren't perfect but, in our experience, they haven't been worse than recorded programs. That said, I haven't tried renting since the Fall 2008 update. - Seth Long
growing pains maybe? - .LAG
No he didn't. :-) Time to update that as a multi-author blog, Mike! - Louis Gray
I get HD on my Xbox 360 :-) I get Netflix, Hulu, and games, too. :-P - Jesse Stay
@Tim- What is the file format for Amazon, and is DRM used? - Mike Chelen
Even with Netflix, the Xbox, and HD Tivo, all offering movies to me, I still find myself renting on AppleTV more than I care to admit. It is so seductively simple and great looking. - Caleb Elston
agree with caleb - we have same options but tend to opt for apple tv more often than not - ex: watched season 1 of mad men over a few weekends so we could better understand season 2 - mike "glemak" dunn
The price should be reduced until demand really kicks in. I would pay 50 to 75 cents, but 99 cents does seem like a waste. - Roney Smith
Hey Louis, I'm the director of operations for Video Downloads for TiVo. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I think you must have a bad drive, because what you experienced isn't typical at all. I had no problems with either title you rented. Can you drop me a line (estephen@tivo.com) and we can do some troubleshooting? I'll also make sure you get a refund for the two rentals. - Stephen Mack
Stephen, appreciate the note and good to see you here. Our TiVo HD unit is doing great with all other media, so I hope it is not a drive issue. Let's connect offline. I'd love to talk about a lot more than a mere $1.98. - Louis Gray
Hey look... see.. FF community rocks!! - Susan Beebe
I'm having fine results with HD movies on AppleTV. OTOH I like YouTube much better on TiVo than ATV. - Michael Markman

Facebook Connect: Does Issuing Passports Make Facebook A Country? My RSS reader is buzzing with a lot hype around Facebook's Connect this morning. The lead story seems to be the New York Times article entitled Facebook Aims to Extend Its Reach Across the Web which announces that a number of popular sites are about to adopt the technology. The article is excerpted below Facebook Connect, as the company’s new feature is called, allows its members to log onto other Web sites using their Facebook identification and see their friends’ activities on those sites. Developers Concerned that Facebook’s Implementation of Demographic Restrictions is Limiting App RevenuesSince Facebook announced its Demographic Restrictions feature in August, developers have been eager to take advantage of the new functionality (and simultaneous policy change) allowing them to target of-age users with advertising related to alcohol sales. However, since the new policy went into effect three weeks ago, some developers are experiencing challenges with Facebook’s implementation of Demographic Restrictions that are limiting their ability to derive revenues from the new feature. Here’s how one top developer put it in a recent email to Inside Facebook: <fb:restricted-to location=”us” type=”alcohol”> excludes users who have chosen to hide their year-of-birth from their friends even...

Online Museum Database Ready to block out the next ten hours of your life? Coudal Partners, a brilliant online publishing house from Chicago, has a mind-blowing new feature on their site called MoOM: the Museum of Online Museums. I was going to post a specific museum, instead of the whole list, but how in god's name can you choose between the Airline Spoons of the World museum (Gulf Air pictured above), the Museum of Generic Mac and Cheese Packaging, and the Gallery of Sega Start-Up Logos? They're mostly artifact collections, which means instant design inspiration. That is, if you really need a...
